    Magnolia proved that defense remains its strongest identity after shutting down Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 88-73, in their Manila Clasico clash in the PBA Season 50 Governor’s Cup on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.


    The Hotshots dictated the game from the opening half, with Zavier Lucero setting the tone on both ends of the floor. 

     

    Lucero erupted for 22 points before halftime, giving Magnolia early control before finishing with a dominant stat line of 24 points, 10 rebounds, two steals, and two assists.

     

    “I felt like I kind of let the team down in our last game. I just tried to come out and be an example to my teammates on how we needed to come out and set the tone – not necessarily on offense but also on defense,” Lucero said. 

     

    His performance not only fueled Magnolia offensively but also became the centerpiece of a defensive effort that frustrated the Gin Kings throughout the night.

    “I take pride in my defense, as it’s our team’s best chance at winning,” he said.

     

    While Lucero delivered the early knockout punch, import KJ Buffen provided steady production of his own, finishing with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and two steals to help Magnolia improve to 2-3 in the conference.

     

    The Hotshots’ defensive discipline made life miserable for Ginebra’s offense, particularly import Riley Grigsby.

     

    After entering the game as one of the conference’s reliable scorers, Grigsby was held to his lowest output of the tournament with just 15 points on an inefficient 5-of-19 shooting.

     

    Stephen Holt paced Barangay Ginebra with 17 points and five rebounds, but the Gin Kings struggled to find consistent offensive rhythm. 

     

    Guard RJ Abarrientos also endured a difficult outing, finishing with only six points on 2-of-9 shooting.

     

    Despite the added attention that comes with every Manila Clasico meeting, Lucero insisted his preparation never changes regardless of the opponent.

     

    “There’s a lot of draw from the crowd just because it’s Ginebra, so it’s more fun and there are more people, and that’s all great. But I try not to switch my mentality to any game,” he said.

     

    The victory allowed Magnolia to move into a tie for fourth place in Group A alongside Barangay Ginebra, with both teams now holding identical 2-3 records after five games.

     

    Magnolia will look to build on its momentum when it faces the Meralco Bolts on Friday, August 7, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. Ginebra, meanwhile, hopes to bounce back when it takes on the Blackwater Bossing on Sunday, August 9, at the same venue.

    Fresh from helping establish herself as one of the Premier Volleyball League’s rising middle blockers, Thea Gagate will continue her career overseas after signing with Japan SV.League club Denso Airybees for the 2026-27 season.

     

    The Japanese club officially announced Gagate’s arrival on Friday, adding another promising Filipino talent to its roster.

     

    “We would like to thank you for your warm support to Denso Airybees. We would like to inform you that we have decided to sign Thea Allison Gagate,” Denso Airybees said in a social media post.

     

    The move places Gagate in familiar company as she becomes the third Filipino to suit up for Denso Airybees, following Jia De Guzman and Jaja Santiago, now known as Sachi Minowa. 

     

    Her signing also expands the growing list of Filipinos who have earned opportunities in Japan’s premier volleyball league, joining Bryan Bagunas, Marck Espejo, Sachi Minowa, Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Jia De Guzman, Maddie Madayag, and Brian Castro.

    Before turning professional, Gagate built an impressive résumé at De La Salle University. She captured three UAAP championships, winning two titles with the Lady Bullpups before helping the Lady Spikers reclaim the women’s volleyball crown.

     

    Her move overseas also creates a significant void for ZUS Coffee, where she emerged as one of the anchors of the Thunderbelles’ formidable middle rotation in the Premier Volleyball League.

     

    With Gagate departing, ZUS Coffee is expected to lean on Zam Nolasco, Riza Nogales, and rookie Alyanna Ong to handle the middle, while converted opposite hitter AC Miner offers another option at the net.

     

    The Thunderbelles remain in the middle of their PVL On Tour campaign and are scheduled to wrap up their preliminary schedule against PLDT on August 8 in Santiago, Isabela, while Gagate begins preparing for the biggest chapter of her volleyball career in Japan.

    Alas Pilipinas Girls eye breakthrough at FIVB U17 World Championship 

    The Alas Pilipinas Girls will compete in the 2026 FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U17 World Championship from August 6 to 16 in Santiago, Chile, becoming the first Philippine volleyball team to qualify outright for an FIVB World Championship without hosting the event. 


    The Alas Pilipinas men competed in last year’s FIVB Men’s World Championship as hosts, while the women’s team is set to host in 2029.

     

    The Philippines begins its Pool B campaign against defending champion China on August 6 before taking on Mexico on August 7, Tunisia on August 8, Peru on August 10, and Venezuela on August 11.

     

    Much of the roster that secured the country’s historic qualification by finishing fifth in last year’s AVC U16 Women’s Volleyball Championship in Amman, Jordan remains intact. 

     

    U16 holdovers Nadeth Herbon, Resty Jane Olaguir, Megan Hernandez, Jhenica Sadia, Madele Gale, and Frances Ramos return alongside newcomers Caera Celis, Irish Mahinay, Jhaynna Bulandres, Sharina Lleses, Princess Khaira Manzano, Taj Arkhea Teves, and Andrea Mauricio.

     

    Leading the group is National University Nazareth School standout Xyz Rayco, who emerged as the team’s leading scorer during its memorable campaign in Jordan.

    Heading into her first World Championship, the young hitter believes the team’s familiarity with one another will be one of its biggest strengths.

     

    “It’s a big advantage that we’ll be representing the country together again. Because we already know each other’s game, that familiarity will really help us perform better as a team,” she said.

     

    Rayco added that while the squad had only a limited preparation period, the players have continued to improve with every training session despite coming from different schools.

     

    She also shared that the squad has made steady progress in training, with each player embracing their role. Although the team is still building chemistry after coming from different schools, she believes their teamwork has improved noticeably on and off the court. 

     

    “I believe we’re all ready to represent the Philippines at the World Championship,” the 15-year-old said.

     

    Limited preparation has not changed the team’s mindset. Instead, Rayco and her squad view the tournament as a chance to show that their qualification was no fluke and that the Philippines can compete against the world’s best at the youth level. 

     

    Still, the team hopes to build on the confidence gained from its fifth-place finish in the AVC U16 Women’s Volleyball Championship and show that it belongs on the global stage.

    Strong Group Athletics could not complete its comeback bid as Supreme Tip Chonburi-E.Tech held firm for a 25-13, 25-20, 16-25, 25-21 victory in the opening match of the 2026 Formosa Women’s Volleyball Invitational Tournament on Thursday at Xinzhuang Gymnasium in Chinese Taipei.


    The Philippine side struggled to establish its rhythm early, allowing the Thai club to build a two-set advantage before making a strong response in the third frame.

     

    Strong Group showed its fighting spirit after the break, controlling the third set from the opening exchanges. Holding a slim 13-11 lead, Ces Molina helped ignite a crucial 12-5 closing run before finishing the set with a kill to extend the match.

     

    The momentum appeared to shift toward Strong Group in the fourth set as it carried its confidence from the previous frame and built an early advantage. 

     

    However, Supreme Tip Chonburi remained composed and relied on the efforts of Kuttika Kaewpin and Waranya Srilaoong to erase the deficit and regain control.

     

    Trisha Tubu gave Strong Group one final chance after her powerful attack grazed Kaewpin’s arms to save a match point, but Srilaoong delivered the finishing blow with an off-the-block kill to secure the victory for Supreme Chonburi.

    However, Kaewpin sparked a decisive 4-1 finish that gave Supreme Chonburi a commanding 2-0 lead.

     

    Despite the opening loss, Strong Group gained valuable international exposure as the team continues to build chemistry against foreign competition. 

     

    The squad, which combines players from PVL clubs Farm Fresh Foxies and ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles, features key contributors such as Tubu and is using the tournament as preparation against higher-level opponents.

     

    Strong Group will look to bounce back when it faces host team Earth Power Taipei on Saturday night, with a victory needed to strengthen its chances of advancing to the medal round.

    The Philippines stayed in contention at the Philippine International Challenge 2026 after Clarence Villaflor advanced to the men’s singles quarterfinals and the tandem of Julius Villabrille and Solomon Padiz Jr. also booked a place in the last eight with separate victories on Thursday at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City. 


    Leading the charge was Villaflor, who continued to make the most of home-court advantage by booking a place in the men’s singles quarterfinals with a 21-18, 21-13 victory over Thailand’s Tanawat Yimjit.

     

    The 22-year-old weathered an early feeling-out period before gradually taking control of the match through his pace and shot selection. After edging a competitive opening game, Villaflor dominated the second set, turning a comfortable lead into a convincing finish to wrap up the Round of 16 contest in straight games.

     

    “Siguro po, una, adjustment talaga since bago ko pa lang siya nakalaban. ‘Yung una ko pong ginawa is pasok lang po muna ‘yung bola, tsaka basahin ko po ‘yung ginagawa niya. Kinuha ko muna ‘yung momentum na maka-rally, tapos sinabayan ko na rin po ng fast ball,” the world No. 122 said.

     

    Villaflor credited the energy inside the venue for helping him sustain his momentum in the country’s first-ever hosting of the Philippine International Challenge, which attracted players from 28 nations through the support of the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee.

     

    “Isa po ‘yun sa factor sa ‘kin, ‘yung suporta ng Pilipinas ngayon. Talagang grabe, naririnig ko po ‘yung sigawan, ‘yung palakpakan nila. Sobrang happy ako kasi halos lahat andito, lahat po sumusuporta,” Villaflor added.

    The Filipinos appeared headed for a comfortable opening-set victory after establishing an early lead, only for the Thai pair to storm back and steal the set. The World Championships-bound duo responded with greater composure, forcing a deciding set before completing the turnaround in just under 58 minutes.

     

    “Actually, nung first set nabigla rin kami kasi lamang kami eh, pero biglang nabaligtad ‘yung game; sila ‘yung unang nanalo. Kaya nung second set at third set iniba talaga namin ‘yung game play namin. Kailangan focused talaga kami, kailangang 100 percent na dapat ganito ‘yung tira namin, ‘yung gagawin namin,” Padiz shared.

     

    Villabrille and Padiz now face Malaysia’s Bryan Jeremy Goonting and Muhammad Haikal in the quarterfinals, with a semifinal berth and at least a podium finish on the line.

    As Rain or Shine continues its climb in the PBA Season 50 Governor’s Cup, Andrei Caracut has made one thing clear: his attention is fixed on helping the Elasto Painters win games, not on the uncertainty surrounding his contract.


    The veteran guard is among the Rain or Shine players whose deals are being discussed during the conference, but with the team right in the middle of the playoff race, Caracut believes there is little value in letting negotiations affect his performance.

     

    “Since ongoing yung season, focus na rin muna ako sa laro,” Caracut said.

     

    Rain or Shine improved to a 2-2 record after a convincing 110-99 victory over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, creating a tie with the Meralco Bolts in Group B. 

     

    The win also strengthened the Elasto Painters’ bid to move higher in the standings as they prepare for another crucial assignment against the Magnolia Hotshots on Friday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

     

    Although Caracut admitted that contract matters occasionally cross his mind, he has chosen to leave the process in the hands of his representatives while concentrating on basketball.

    “Siyempre, mapapaisip ka rin. Pero nung nag-start na yung season, sabi ko, ipapaubaya ko na kay boss Danny,” he said.

    Head coach Yeng Guiao previously echoed that patience is the organization’s approach regarding Caracut’s future.

     

    “We’re not in an emergency or urgent situation when it comes to Andrei,” Guiao said. “His contract was auto-extended until the end of the conference so we have plenty of time to discuss a new deal.”

     

    While the negotiations can wait, Caracut’s value to Rain or Shine has already been established. Since the 2024 Philippine Cup, he has played a key role in helping the franchise reach five semifinal appearances in its last six conferences. 

     

    Beyond his steady play, the former De La Salle University standout has also built a strong following off the court through his social media presence.

     

    Through four games this conference, Caracut has averaged 3.7 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists, embracing a role that goes beyond scoring as Rain or Shine continues to shuffle its rotation.

     

    This conference has also brought change to the Elasto Painters’ roster. Caracut saw longtime teammate Gian Mamuyac leave the franchise after the latter was acquired by the Phoenix Fuel Masters. Like Caracut, Mamuyac had his contract automatically extended before eventually moving on.

     

    The departure was difficult for Caracut, who spent four years sharing Rain or Shine’s backcourt with his former collegiate rival.

     

    “Si Gian, four years din kaming nagsama dito sa Rain or Shine. Nakakalungkot,” the 30-year-old guard said.

     

    Still, Caracut understands that player movement is part of professional basketball, even if it is never easy to accept. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his own future, he made it known where he hopes to remain.

     

    “Siyempre, ako, willing naman akong mag-stay. Napamahal na ako dito,” he said.

     

    For now, those conversations are taking a back seat. With Rain or Shine looking to build on its 2-2 start and chase a higher position in Group B, Caracut’s immediate goal is to contribute on the floor and help the Elasto Painters continue their winning momentum.

    The first major test of Alas Pilipinas’ newly assembled squad begins this week as the national women’s volleyball team opens its campaign in the SEA V Cup Leg 1 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

     

    With the Asian Games looming in September, the tournament serves as the team’s first opportunity to measure its chemistry and progress after the national pool was formed just over a month ago.


    Alas departed for Vietnam on Thursday and safely arrived in Hanoi ahead of the competition, which gets underway Friday at the Dong Anh Gymnasium. 

     

    The team’s official social media page shared photos of the squad’s arrival as preparations shifted from training to competition.

     

    Leading the national team is Japanese coach Taka Minowa, husband of former Philippine volleyball star Jaja Santiago, who will guide a roster largely composed of players loaned by Premier Volleyball League clubs.

     

    Capital1’s Bella Belen, Vanie Gandler, and Erika Santos headline the squad alongside ZUS Coffee’s Thea Gagate, Choco Mucho’s Eya Laure and Dawn Catindig, PLDT’s Dell Palomata, Akari’s Mars Alba, Jasmine Jazareno, and Fifi Sharma, Galeries Tower’s Lams Lamina, and Creamline setter Jia de Guzman.

     

    Joining them are collegiate and non-PVL standouts Nina Ytang, Alyssa Solomon, Arah Panique, Shaira Jardio, Celine Marsh, Vange Alinsug, Angel Canino, and Amie Provido, giving the coaching staff a deep pool of talent to evaluate before the continental meet.

    The tournament has become an important platform for Southeast Asian national teams to improve their international standing while preparing for major events such as the Asian Games and the AVC Asian Volleyball Championship. 

     

    Only one team will emerge as champion at the end of the three-day competition, while the second leg of the tournament is scheduled for August 7 to 9 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

     

    The 2026 campaign offers another opportunity for the national team to improve on that record as it builds toward the Asian Games.

    The Philippines is positioning itself as a rising destination for international pickleball after plans were unveiled to bring the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Asia circuit to the country for the first time.


    The country is set to host the PPA Asia 125 tournament in December 2026, followed by the PPA Asia 500, also known as the Manila Open, in January 2027, as pickleball continues to gain popularity among Filipino athletes and enthusiasts.

     

    The announcement came alongside the launch plans for a world-class pickleball facility at Bridgetowne in Pasig City, where Kosmas Athletic Ventures Corporation (KAVC) is preparing to build a venue capable of hosting major international competitions.

     

    Former Philippine Sports Commission chairman and current KAVC head of operations Dickie Bachmann said the PPA 125 event at Helios Beta will provide Filipino players with an opportunity to gain valuable ranking points and eventually compete at higher levels of the sport.

     

    The Helios Beta facility is scheduled for completion by October and will feature 14 courts, including a center court designed to accommodate up to 1,000 spectators. 

     

    The venue will host the PPA Asia 125 before becoming the stage for the PPA Asia 500 tournament the following January.

     

    The PPA Asia 125 serves as an entry-level platform in the PPA Tour Asia structure, giving developing players the chance to collect ranking points and work their way toward the 500 (Open), 1000 (Cup), and 1500 (Slam) levels.

    Beyond the initial tournaments, KAVC is also preparing a larger pickleball project with the planned opening of the Helios Pickleball Center in March 2028. 

     

    The facility is expected to feature 25 tournament-standard courts, highlighted by a championship center court with a 2,000-seat capacity.

     

    The project is being developed in partnership with Johns Design and Consulting (JDC), founded by renowned pickleball players Ben and Collin Johns. 

     

    Collin Johns is well-known 35-time PPA doubles champion, he believes that the Philippines has the potential to become one of Asia’s major pickleball destinations.

     

    “Pickleball is experiencing explosive growth globally, and the Philippines is poised to become a major hub for the sport in Asia. Our goal is to ensure facilities are built with precise technical standards—from court surfaces and lighting to player flow,” Johns said. 

     

    KAVC president Kim Lapus said the collaboration with JDC reflects the organization’s goal of creating international-standard facilities that can support both professional athletes and the growing local pickleball community.

     

    Preparations for the upcoming events have also gained support from Philippine sports officials. In June, Philippine Sports Commission chairman Patrick Gregorio met with Philippine Pickleball Federation president Shery Anne Cu, deputy secretary-general Atty. Roy Iba, Bachmann, Event Director Francisco Lapus, and Event and Partnership Lead Avvy Lapus to discuss plans for the country’s upcoming international hosting duties.

     

    With the arrival of PPA Asia events, the Philippines aims to transform its growing pickleball interest into a stronger competitive scene while giving local players a chance to experience world-class competition on home soil.

    Charly Suarez believes his victory over Manuel Avila was more than just another championship win, as it kept him firmly in contention for another opportunity to fight for a world title.


    For the Filipino boxer, victory meant staying in the hunt for another crack at boxing’s biggest prize, while defeat could erase years of climbing back into world title contention.

     

    Suarez made sure the opportunity remained alive, defeating the Mexican-American in San Bernardino, California, to capture the WBO International super featherweight championship and strengthen his standing in the organization’s rankings.

     

    The triumph was especially meaningful because the bout had direct implications in the WBO title picture.

     

    “Si Avila ang magiging mandatory challenger para kay current world champion Emanuel Navarrete. Kaya sobrang saya ko sa naging resulta,” Suarez said.

     

    Rather than viewing the fight as another stop on his professional journey, Suarez treated it as a defining moment. He understood that losing would have undone years of sacrifice and left his pursuit of another world title back at square one.

     

    The victory was the payoff to an intense three-month training camp that tested both his physical and mental endurance. Suarez credited the preparation of his entire team for allowing him to stay composed under the pressure of a high-stakes fight.

     

    “Hindi talaga madali. Tatlong buwan kaming naghanda para sa laban,” Suarez said.

    The win added another milestone to the career of the former Olympian, who has remained among the top contenders in the super featherweight division despite already challenging Emanuel Navarrete for the WBO world championship. 

     

    Instead of dwelling on that previous setback, Suarez has steadily worked his way back into position for another opportunity on boxing’s biggest stage.

     

    With the Avila victory now behind him, discussions have already begun regarding his next assignment as his team evaluates potential opponents who could move him one step closer to another world title fight.

     

    Although he has stepped away from the ring temporarily, Suarez has not taken his foot off the gas. After allowing himself a brief break following months of preparation, the Filipino boxer quickly returned to training and is currently based in Arizona with Renren Gamboa, who was tasked by his coach to oversee his conditioning while the team is away from Las Vegas.

     

    For Suarez, the latest victory was less about celebrating a new championship belt and more about keeping a lifelong dream within reach. With his place in the WBO title race preserved, the road back to another world championship opportunity remains open.
