    Tony Mitchell named starting import for Macau Black Bears in 2026 PBA Commissioner’s Cup

    The Macau Black Bears will begin their 2026 PBA Commissioner’s Cup campaign with Tony Mitchell as their starting import.


    The 6-foot-7 American power forward was listed as the team’s official reinforcement in the roster submitted ahead of the mid-season tournament, putting him at the forefront of Macau’s opening lineup.

     

    Mitchell brings previous PBA experience into the role. He last played in the league during the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup, where he suited up for NLEX and made his presence felt with his athleticism and scoring ability.

     

    This time around, Mitchell is expected to lead the Black Bears on both ends of the floor as the guest squad looks to challenge the league’s established contenders.

     

    Serving as insurance behind him is towering Maltese center Sam Deguara. Although the 7-foot-5 big man was not included in the official roster, he is set to act as Mitchell’s backup option should Macau decide to make a change at the import spot during the conference.

     

    Macau will open its campaign on March 11 against the Converge FiberXers at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, marking the team’s first appearance in this season’s Commissioner’s Cup.

    The Black Bears’ lineup also features several players familiar with the regional basketball scene. Ramon Cao is making his return to the PBA after previously playing for Hong Kong Eastern in last year’s edition of the tournament.

     

    Jenning Leung, a Brent International School alumnus, is also part of the roster, adding another link between Macau’s squad and Philippine basketball.

     

    Completing the lineup are Chao Xingzhao, Zhu Zhaojing, Damian Chongqui, Phoenix Shackelford, Liu Wenke, Li Jiashuo, Sun Meng, Li Xiaoxu, Li Zijie, Wang Yingran, Lao Chonpong, Chan Lihsing, and Gao Yufeng.

     

    The Black Bears will be guided by head coach Garret Kelly, with Rich Alvarez, Denzel Wong, Ram Manalang, and Wong Chichong serving as his assistants.

     

    Jacque Ruby will serve as team representative, while Mark Dandan takes on the duties of team manager as Macau prepares for its PBA stint.

    Savi Davison’s 32-point explosion lifts her to No. 2 in PVL Best Scorers race

    Savannah “Savi” Davison delivered one of the most dominant performances of the 2026 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference — and it did more than just secure a victory for PLDT.

    Her 32-point explosion against Farm Fresh also propelled the High Speed Hitters’ star from fifth place to second in the league’s Best Scorers race.

     

    Davison powered PLDT to a gritty 25-17, 23-25, 27-25, 21-25, 15-10 victory over the Foxies on Thursday at the Filoil Centre in San Juan, a win that pushed the High Speed Hitters to solo first place in the standings.

     

    The Filipino-Canadian outside hitter produced 28 attacks, three blocks, and an ace, while also making her presence felt on defense with 13 excellent receptions and 12 excellent digs in the two-hour and 26-minute marathon.

     

    The scoring burst significantly boosted Davison’s season total to 127 points, moving her up three spots in the Best Scorers leaderboard.

     

    Only Capital1’s Mhicaela Belen remains ahead with 155 points, while Farm Fresh’s Trisha Tubu sits just behind Davison in third with 126. Cignal’s Vanie Gandler follows with 117 markers, and Choco Mucho’s Cherry Ann Rondina rounds out the top five with 115.

    Davison’s surge reflects the steady form she has displayed throughout the conference as PLDT continues its strong campaign. Her scoring efficiency and all-around contribution have been crucial in the High Speed Hitters’ climb to the top of the standings. 

     

    The performance marked Davison’s most explosive outing since PLDT’s conference-opening win over Creamline, where she finished with 26 points. 

     

    In fact, the High Speed Hitters’ ace had not cracked the 20-point mark in three of her previous four games prior to the Farm Fresh clash.

     

    Against Farm Fresh, the PVL Invitational MVP repeatedly delivered in crucial moments, particularly in the deciding fifth set where PLDT pulled away late to escape the upset bid.

     

    With PLDT continuing its push in the conference and Davison gaining momentum in the scoring race, the battle for the PVL’s top offensive honors is shaping up to be just as intense as the fight for the championship.

    Jaclyn Sawicki expected back as Filipinas brace for must-win clash with Iran

    The Philippine Women’s National Football Team could regain one of its key leaders just in time for its most crucial match of the tournament.

     

    Midfield anchor Jaclyn Sawicki is expected to return to action for the Filipinas when they face Iran in their final Group A match of the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, after missing the team’s 3-0 loss to South Korea due to a minor injury sustained in training.

     

    Sawicki was notably absent from the matchday lineup on Thursday, with Isabella Pasion stepping into the starting XI while Arianna Markey also earned a start in place of Alexa Pino against the powerhouse Taeguk Ladies.

     

    After the match, Filipinas head coach Mark Torcaso clarified that Sawicki’s absence was more about caution than concern.

     

    “Yeah, Jackie got a little knock in training yesterday. She’ll be okay for the next game. She probably could have gotten close to playing this one, but we also have to consider that if we want to get out of the group, we need to have Jackie at her best,” he explained.

     

    “And it was probably just not in the best for her to play this game. But she’s going to be 100 percent ready for the next game,” Torcaso added.

     

    With Sawicki sidelined, the Filipinas turned to younger options to fill the gap in midfield and defense. Torcaso commended Pasion for stepping up in a difficult assignment against one of Asia’s traditional powerhouses.

     

    “Obviously, they’re big shoes to fill because Jackie is a very important player for us. But, you know, Bella pushed really hard. And I think in the second half, we got to see Jourdyn Curran and first what she’s about. She’s a new player to us as well. So they both, you know, did a really good job,” he said.

    Torcaso believes the rest period will allow Sawicki to return at full strength for Sunday’s decisive encounter.

     

    “Obviously, Jackie is a very experienced player and a very important player to our group. But we’ll definitely be seeing Jackie back in the next game. Just more precautionary, probably with her,” he said.

     

    The Filipinas, however, head into that match under immense pressure after absorbing their second straight defeat in the tournament. South Korea struck early and maintained control in the 3-0 victory, leaving the Philippines searching for its first points of the competition.

     

    Despite the result, Torcaso emphasized the team’s resilience and growth, especially among its younger players.

     

    “We don’t like to lose. But the character of our players always shines. And the character of our young players definitely comes on and show the exuberance and the excitement that we need. And that’s backed up by our experienced players,” he said.

     

    “And while, again, it’s not the result that we wanted, we want to obviously be closer and closer to the best teams. It’s also a very good experience and learning for all our players, young and experienced,” Torcaso added.

     

    With their tournament hopes hanging in the balance, the Filipinas now turn their focus to Iran in what has effectively become a must-win match. A positive result would keep the Philippines in contention for a quarterfinal berth while also keeping alive its pathway toward qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

    Meralco still searching for import as Commissioner’s Cup opener nears

    Time is ticking for Meralco as the 2026 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup approaches, yet one key piece of its roster puzzle remains unresolved.

     

    With only 12 days left before the Bolts open their campaign, the team has yet to officially name its import, leaving a notable vacancy in the lineup released by the franchise on Friday.

     

    The absence of a designated reinforcement raised eyebrows, especially since Puerto Rican big man Ismael Romero had long been linked to the role. Romero had been working with the team during its stint in the East Asia Super League, fueling speculation that he would carry the import duties once the conference begins.

     

    But uncertainty surrounding Romero’s situation may have complicated those plans.

     

    The 6-foot-8 forward recently drew attention for the wrong reasons during the Dubai International Basketball Championship in January while playing for Al Ahli Tripoli. In a heated moment during a game, Romero kicked former PBA player Nick Demusis, sparking controversy. The incident has lingered in basketball circles, and Romero has yet to publicly apologize.

     

    Whether Meralco ultimately sticks with Romero or looks elsewhere for a reinforcement remains to be seen as the countdown to the conference continues.

    Momentum has been building for Cignal in the 2026 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference, but the Super Spikers are making sure it doesn’t turn into complacency.

     

    Fresh off a convincing straight-sets win over ZUS Coffee, Cignal strengthened its standing in the tournament with a 5-2 record, good for solo third place behind the early leaders PLDT and Creamline. The victory further highlighted the team’s growing confidence as the race for playoff positioning tightens.

     

    Still, the Super Spikers understand that a strong record in the preliminary round guarantees nothing in a conference where the format ensures every team remains in the hunt.

     

    “We know that no one is safe, even though we started the conference strongly. We know that we’re not safe because everyone has wins, everyone has losses. And now is not the time for us to relax,” said Cignal ace Vanie Gandler after their 25-18, 25-23, 25-22 win over ZUS Coffee.

     

    Under the tournament’s format, the top four teams after the preliminary phase advance to the qualifying round. From there, two teams will secure outright spots in the semifinals, while the losing sides are given another chance by facing the Play-In winners.

     

    The Play-In stage gives teams ranked fifth to tenth a lifeline, splitting them into two groups of three where the group winners will challenge the qualifying round losers for the final semifinal slots.

    With so many twists built into the path toward the championship, every win remains crucial — a reality not lost on the Super Spikers as they continue their steady climb.

    The PBA’s rising stars won’t be the only attraction in Friday’s Rookies and Sophomores vs. Juniors showcase.

     

    Four of the league’s most recognizable veterans — Arwind Santos, Willie Miller, Marc Pingris, and Ranidel De Ocampo — are set to step back onto the court to add a nostalgic twist to the All-Star weekend event.

     

    Former MVPs Santos and Miller will suit up for the Rookies and Sophomores side, while Pingris and De Ocampo will reinforce the Juniors squad in a matchup that already features some of the PBA’s brightest young talents from their first three seasons in the league.

     

    Their participation forms part of the PBA’s 50th anniversary celebration, with commissioner Willie Marcial opting to blend past and present after plans for a full legends matchup proved difficult to organize.

    “When it comes to basketball, competitive. Kahit fun basketball, Pilipino tayo, ayaw natin magpatalo diba. Pag jumpball, iba na ‘yung mentality,” said the 48-year-old Miller.

     

    The appearance of the four legends is expected to add extra energy to the contest, blending nostalgia with the promise of the PBA’s next generation as the league continues its golden anniversary celebration.

    With the victory, the Aguilas capped a perfect two-day run, sweeping all six of their games in the tournament.

     

    The team of Mikka Cacho, Camille Malagar, Elizabeth Means, and Trina Guytingco showcased both grit and consistency throughout the competition, surviving a tense championship clash to seal the crown.

     

    Pilipinas Aguilas, coached by Paolo Layug, controlled the tournament from the start, finishing on top of Pool B after sweeping their three preliminary assignments.

    The High Speed Hitters endured a tense five-set battle before finally shaking off a stubborn Farm Fresh side, 25-17, 23-25, 27-25, 21-25, 15-10, to seize the solo lead in the 2026 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference on Thursday at the Playtime Filoil Centre.

     

    With the win, PLDT improved to 5-1 and moved past sister team Cignal at the top of the standings.

    But the victory hardly came easy.

     

    After taking the opening set with relative comfort, the High Speed Hitters were repeatedly pushed to the brink by the Foxies, who refused to fade despite facing a deeper and more experienced lineup.

     

    Farm Fresh answered every surge. It stole the second set, stretched the third into an extended duel, and forced a decider by outlasting PLDT again in the fourth.

     

    The High Speed Hitters finally regained control when it mattered most.

     

    Savi Davison sparked the decisive run in the fifth frame, scoring back-to-back points before Jessey De Leon and Angge Alcantara followed with key contributions in a 4-0 burst that pushed PLDT to match point at 14-9.

     

    After an Alcantara service error briefly delayed the finish, Davison slammed a crosscourt kill to seal the victory and cap a dominant individual outing.

     

    Davison finished with 32 points built on 28 attacks, three blocks, and one ace, while Kianna Dy added 19 markers as PLDT leaned on its firepower.

     

    Despite committing a game-high 30 errors, the High Speed Hitters made up for it with superior offense, dominating Farm Fresh in attacks, 74-59, and blocks, 14-7.

     

    On the other side, Ria Meneses led the Foxies with 17 points, while Trisha Tubu and Ces Molina chipped in 16 and 14, respectively.

     

    Farm Fresh slipped to 2-4 after dropping its second straight five-set heartbreaker and will try to regroup when it faces Choco Mucho on March 10. PLDT, meanwhile, takes on Galeries Tower on the same day at the same San Juan venue.

    Earlier, Cignal bounced back emphatically from its previous loss, sweeping ZUS Coffee, 25-18, 25-23, 25-22, to stay within striking distance in the standings.

     

    The Super Spikers improved to 5-2, reclaiming their rhythm while handing the Thunderbelles their fourth straight defeat.

     

    Cignal seized control in the second set behind an unlikely source.

     

    With the frame tied at 23, veteran setter Gel Cayuna stepped up not with her playmaking but with timely scoring. She first rejected Cess Robles at the net for set point before finishing the set herself with a through-the-block hit in an out-of-system play to give Cignal a commanding 2-0 lead.

     

    ZUS Coffee tried to mount a comeback in the third, building a 15-11 cushion, but the Super Spikers showed their poise down the stretch.

     

    Vanie Gandler led the response, delivering four of Cignal’s final six points as the Super Spikers closed out the match in one hour and 26 minutes.

     

    Rose Doria-Aquino added 11 points on nine attacks and two blocks, while Erika Santos and Jackie Acuña chipped in nine and eight points, respectively.

     

    The Thunderbelles, who dropped to 1-6 in the tournament, were led by Thea Gagate and Chinnie Arroyo with 11 points each.

     

    Cignal returns to action on March 14 against Capital1, while ZUS Coffee looks to halt its slide when it faces Nxled next Thursday at the same venue.

    Alex Eala faces familiar rival Dayana Yastremska to open Indian Wells campaign

    Alex Eala steps onto one of tennis’ grandest stages this week, opening her first-ever campaign at the Indian Wells Open with a matchup against a player she has already solved before.

     

    The rising Filipina star will take on Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in the Round of 64 of the WTA 1000 event in California on Friday, March 6 (Saturday, March 7, Manila time), marking their second career meeting.
