    Nine pool players hit the floor Tuesday, setting the tone for a five-day buildup ahead of crucial home games against New Zealand on February 27 and Australia on March 1. 

     

    Dwight Ramos flew in from Hokkaido just a night earlier and immediately joined holdovers Justin Brownlee, June Mar Fajardo, Scottie Thompson, CJ Perez, Chris Newsome, and RJ Abarrientos. Also in uniform were Juan Gomez de Liano and Justine Baltazar, both eager to solidify their spots in a competitive rotation.

     

    The early sessions carried a familiar rhythm. Much of the core remains intact, and that continuity matters for a team that has already built momentum with a 2-0 record in Pool A.

     

    Still, this window comes with visible absences.

     

    Quentin Millora-Brown remains out as discussions between his camp and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas continue, with no finalized national team contract in place. Kai Sotto, currently playing in Japan with Koshigaya, is still regaining full strength after an ACL tear last year. Jamie Malonzo, the hero of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, will also sit out this stretch.

    Winning hasn’t masked the truth inside the Creamline camp — and they’re not pretending it has.

    At 2-1 in the 2026 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference, the Cool Smashers are back in the win column after dropping their opener to PLDT. 

     

    On paper, back-to-back victories over Choco Mucho and ZUS Coffee suggest stability. On the court, however, Creamline knows it’s still searching for rhythm.

     

    The ZUS Coffee match told the story clearly. Creamline opened flat, surrendered the first set, and looked momentarily unsure of itself. Then the switch flipped. The Cool Smashers imposed their will in the next three sets to pull away, 22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-18. It was clinical — eventually. But it also highlighted the gap between potential and performance.

     

    And no one articulated that better than Jia De Guzman.

     

    “Despite our wins, we sometimes put ourselves in unnecessary tough situations,” she said, adding that the team is focused on improving its chemistry to play more cohesively.

     

    For De Guzman, this conference isn’t just about standings. It’s about reintegration and recalibration. After nearly three years away — including a stint with Denso Airybees in Japan’s S.V. League and duties with Alas Pilipinas — the eight-time PVL Best Setter is rediscovering timing, trust, and tempo with a group that has evolved during her absence.

     

    “Ako personally, hindi pa. Hindi pa ito yun,” said De Guzman, who returned to the squad to start the conference after nearly three years, during which she spent time with Denso Airybees in the Japan S.V. League and later with Alas Pilipinas.

     

    “I think there are still a lot of times na we put ourselves in hard situations na hindi naman talaga dapat. Like coach said nga, maraming beses na yung effort talaga namin at yung kagustuhan naming manalo, nagdi-dictate kung ano yung nangyayari sa laro,” she added.

    “And a lot of times, today and the past games, nagsa-stop kami. So, yun yung tina-try naming ayusin din as a team.”

    And strangely, that may be more dangerous for the rest of the league.

     

    “But, as a team, I’m really proud of how we performed. Kasi, ito yung kinds of games na natututo kami gumalaw as one. Parang dito kami nagbi-build ng chemistry,” she said.

     

    “Dito kami nakaka-face ng adversity and kung paano namin iha-handle talaga as one team. So, thankfully talaga, the win went our way.”

     

    Creamline is winning — but it knows it hasn’t arrived.

     

    For a team used to setting the standard, that honesty might be the first real sign that its peak form is still loading.

    Basketball is undeniably the heartbeat of Philippine sports.

     

    From packed barangay courts to primetime television slots, the game dominates our culture in a way no other sport does. The Philippine Basketball Association remains one of Asia’s oldest professional leagues. Gilas Pilipinas continues to compete fiercely in international tournaments. And to be fair, we are not irrelevant in Asia — far from it.

     

    In fact, the Philippines is consistently considered one of the top basketball nations in Asia. We’ve earned respect on the continental stage. We’ve beaten powerhouses. We’ve produced legends. In Southeast Asia, we’re often the gold standard.

     

    That reality deserves acknowledgment.

     

    But here’s the harder truth: being strong in basketball doesn’t mean we should pour nearly everything into it.

     

    Because while basketball thrives structurally — with funding pipelines, media coverage, sponsorships, and grassroots programs — many of our world-class athletes in other sports are forced to rely on private sponsors, personal funding, and overseas training just to stay competitive.

     

    Take Carlos Yulo. A world champion in gymnastics. A Filipino who has stood atop global podiums in a sport where the margins are razor thin and the competition is relentless. His success wasn’t built on a nationwide gymnastics infrastructure comparable to basketball’s. It required sacrifice, overseas training, and sustained backing that often felt fragile.

     

    Or EJ Obiena, who didn’t just participate internationally — he became one of the world’s elite pole vaulters, competing toe-to-toe with the best in the planet. His journey included public funding disputes and financial uncertainty, even while carrying the Philippine flag on the global stage.

     

    Then there’s Alex Eala, who broke barriers in tennis — a sport historically inaccessible to most Filipinos due to cost. Her development required training abroad, international exposure, and significant private backing. Tennis is not a systemically supported pipeline locally, yet she has managed to push into elite territory.

Why do some rely on personal savings, fundraising, or foreign training programs while basketball systems operate with relative stability?

     

    This imbalance isn’t just a funding issue. It’s a mindset issue.

     

    Basketball dominates headlines even when results are routine. Meanwhile, breakthroughs in gymnastics, athletics, tennis, or football often need to be historic before they trend. We celebrate them loudly — briefly — then shift back to the hardwood.

     

    Imagine what would happen if we institutionalized support for multiple sports the way we do basketball. Imagine regional training centers for athletics. Imagine accessible tennis development programs. Imagine a fully funded football grassroots structure nationwide. Imagine athletes not having to choose between representing the country and financial stability.

     

    We are good at basketball in Asia. That is a fact.

     

    But we are capable of being great in more than one sport.

     

    The Philippines does not lack talent. It lacks balanced investment.

     

    Supporting other sports more aggressively is not anti-basketball. It is pro-Filipino excellence. It means recognizing that a country of over 100 million people should not hinge its entire sporting identity on a single game — no matter how beloved it is.

     

    Basketball built our sporting culture. But diversification could build our sporting future. And if we truly want sustained global relevance — not just regional dominance — it’s time to fund that future properly.

    “Deep bench talaga ang meron kami, so no pressure pa rin naman sa akin, sa team. Lalo kasi young team, so marami pa yung puwedeng mangyari,” she said.

     

    “Fino-focus lang talaga namin yung paangat namin at mag-focus kami na mabuo kami. Over time naman, darating na ‘yun kung ibibigay ni Lord at kung makita niya na deserve na naman na makuha yung dapat naming makuha.”
