    For Brownlee, the campaign was a case of what could have been.

     

    Expectations were sky-high when Meralco announced the blockbuster signings of Brownlee and longtime PBA rival Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. On paper, the Bolts suddenly looked like legitimate contenders in the home-and-away tournament.

    The 18-year-old Filipina has officially signed with the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, taking her game to the U.S. NCAA Division I stage beginning fall 2026. For a player who has steadily climbed through regional and international competitions, the move signals both progression and possibility.

     

    The Rainbow Wahine made the announcement on Tuesday with a warm welcome that quickly made waves back home.

     

    “Please welcome Tennielle Madis from N’Lang, North Cotabato, Philippines, to the Rainbow Wahine ‘Ohana! She will be joining the ‘Bows in the fall of 2026,” the program posted on Instagram.

     

    For Madis, the opportunity represents more than a scholarship — it’s a turning point.

     

    “It’s truly an honor and a privilege to be part of Hawai’i Women’s Tennis. I’m deeply grateful as I begin this exciting new chapter of my life,” she shared on her Instagram story.

    On Thursday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre, PLDT showcased that identity in a four-set win over Capital1, 25-20, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17. It was their second straight convincing victory to open the tournament, proof that their dismantling of a full-strength Creamline side a week ago was no fluke.

     

    At the center of it all was Kim Fajardo, orchestrating like a seasoned conductor. Her 25 excellent sets ensured that PLDT’s offense never stagnated. The ball moved with purpose. The attacks came from different angles. Capital1 could not lock in on just one threat.

    Still, Capital1 had Bella Belen, now the league’s leading scorer refused to fade quietly, unloading nine points in the third set alone to extend the match.     The fourth set became a statement. Order was restored. Control reestablished. Momentum preserved.

     

    With the victory, PLDT improved to 2-0 and moved into a tie for second with Nxled in the conference’s early standings. More importantly, they reinforced a blueprint that travels well in long tournaments: diversified scoring, disciplined defense, and a steady hand at setter.

    But inspiration, while powerful, does not automatically translate to accessibility.

     

    The uncomfortable truth is this: tennis in the Philippines has long been a sport shaped by privilege.

     

    Unlike basketball — where a ball and a public court are enough to start a dream — tennis demands infrastructure. Courts are not as widely available, and many are located inside private subdivisions or exclusive clubs. Even where public courts exist, maintenance can be inconsistent.
