    Converge, TNT search for answers as struggling imports take center stage 

    Tuesday’s showdown between Converge and TNT may ultimately be decided by the players both teams expected to carry them.

     

    Instead, it has become a battle between two imports still searching for consistency.

     

    When the FiberXers and the Tropang 5G square off at 7:30 p.m. at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, much of the spotlight will fall on Justin Hudson and Darius Days—two reinforcements who have yet to consistently deliver despite the strong performances of their local teammates.

     

    For Converge, the supporting cast has done more than enough to keep the team among the early contenders.

     

    The FiberXers raced to a 3-0 start behind dominant wins over Titan Ultra, Terrafirma, and the Macau Giant Pandas before finally suffering their first defeat against unbeaten San Miguel Beer, 128-122.

     

    Even in that loss, Converge showed it could compete with one of the league’s top championship favorites.

     

    Justin Arana and Justine Baltazar combined for 45 points and 17 rebounds while battling June Mar Fajardo inside, and Juan Gomez de Liano, Mikee Williams, and Alec Stockton continued to provide reliable scoring.

     

    The one missing piece has been Hudson, who has struggled to establish himself as the consistent offensive force Converge envisioned when it brought him in.

     

    His production becomes even more important against a TNT squad desperate to avoid falling deeper in the standings.

     

    The Tropang 5G, meanwhile, have bigger concerns than simply replacing import scoring.

     

    The defending Governors’ Cup champions have been hit hard by injuries, with Calvin Oftana, Jayson Castro, Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, and Kelly Williams all unavailable, leaving Chot Reyes to rely on a thinner rotation than expected.

    The results have reflected those absences.

     

    After escaping the Macau Giant Pandas in their opener, TNT dropped consecutive games to NLEX and Terrafirma, slipping to 1-2 and outside the current Top Four.

     

    Like Hudson, Days has struggled to consistently impact games, making Tuesday’s matchup an opportunity for either import to finally swing momentum in his team’s favor.

     

    For Converge, a victory would immediately erase the sting of losing its unbeaten record against San Miguel and reinforce the belief that it belongs among the conference’s contenders.

     

    For TNT, the stakes are even higher.

     

    Another defeat would leave the defending champions digging an even deeper hole early in the conference while waiting for their injured stars to return.

     

    Both teams already know their local stars can compete. Now, they need their imports to prove they can do the same.

    For Kianna Dy, PLDT’s opening match in the 2026 PVL On Tour became more than just another preseason game.

     

    It turned into an early birthday celebration surrounded by the people who matter most.

     

    With her family making the long journey from Manila to Vigan City and Gilas Pilipinas star Dwight Ramos also in attendance, Dy responded with one of her best performances of the preseason, firing a match-high 17 points to lift the High Speed Hitters past Choco Mucho, 25-21, 20-25, 29-27, 25-18, on Saturday at the CHAVIT Coliseum in Ilocos Sur.

     

    The victory gave PLDT a winning start in its title defense in the On Tour tournament, but for Dy, the emotional support from the stands made the afternoon even more memorable.

     

    “I really appreciate them because the travel here is not easy, and it takes seven hours going here, and they’re here to watch my game and celebrate my birthday tomorrow,” said Dy.

     

    Among those who made the trip were her mother Bambi, sisters Kaila, Cheeni, and Nika, along with Ramos, whose family has roots in nearby Narvacan, Ilocos Sur.

     

    The veteran opposite spiker rewarded them with an efficient outing, tallying 16 attack points and one block while providing the steady offensive presence PLDT needed throughout the match.

     

    Savi Davison chipped in 13 points despite playing only three sets, while veteran middle blockers Mika Reyes and Majoy Baron added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

     

    The Flying Titans, however, hardly made life easy for the High Speed Hitters.

    Despite missing national team stars Sisi Rondina and Eya Laure, Choco Mucho showed its depth by stealing the second set and pushing the third frame into a tense extended battle before PLDT finally pulled away late to seize control of the match.

     

    The victory also highlighted the High Speed Hitters’ balanced attack, with multiple veterans stepping up whenever momentum threatened to shift in Choco Mucho’s favor.

     

    Still, Dy believes the preseason opener also exposed areas the team must continue refining before the 2026-27 PVL season officially begins.

     

    “It was really an intense game, one is to one talaga. And Choco Mucho mahirap talaga silang kalaban — buti na lang ‘yung mga pumasok talagang nag-perform. Obviously, we need to work on a lot of things for our next games. Pagbalik ng Manila, adjust ulit,” said the 5-foot-11 opposite spiker.

     

    PLDT now shifts its attention to its next PVL On Tour assignment against ZUS Coffee on August 8 in Santiago City, Isabela, hoping to build on a winning start that was made even sweeter by an early birthday celebration for one of its veteran leaders.

    Cebu City All-Stars bring first EASL Elite Future Championship home to Philippines 

    The first-ever East Asia Super League (EASL) Elite Future Championship has found its first champion—and the trophy is headed to the Philippines.

     

    Representing the country, the Cebu City All-Stars etched their names in history after defeating Macau, 61-52, in the championship game of the inaugural 15-and-under tournament at Kai Tak Sports Hall in Hong Kong on Saturday.

     

    The victory capped a memorable run for the young Filipino squad, which not only conquered the competition but also became the first team to lift the newly introduced EASL Elite Future Championship trophy.

     

    Beyond the title, the triumph showcased the rapid chemistry the team developed in a short period of time, something that stood out to Cebu standout Derek Wenceslao.

     

    “I love these guys. We only had eight weeks of training and we built friendship and love. These guys are like my brothers already,” Derek Wenceslao said with pride, holding up the trophy. “We’re really happy to be here right now.”

     

    Cebu controlled much of the contest by relying on disciplined defense and balanced offense, entering the fourth quarter with a comfortable 49-42 cushion.

     

    Macau, however, refused to fold.

     

    The hosts opened the final period with a spirited 9-4 run that sliced the deficit to just two points, 53-51, threatening to erase Cebu’s hard-earned advantage.

     

    With momentum beginning to swing, Kent Labitad delivered the game’s biggest shot.

    The tournament MVP calmly buried a three-pointer with 2:50 remaining, restoring a five-point cushion and allowing Cebu to regain complete control before closing out the historic victory.

     

    Labitad finished with 22 points, five rebounds, and three assists to earn Most Valuable Player honors, while Venz Nadela dominated inside with a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds.

     

    The pair’s stellar tournament performances also earned them spots on the Mythical Five.

    Labitad and Nadela, together with fellow Cebuanos Dwayne Rojo, Derek Wenceslao, and McDome De Asis, will travel to Okinawa next month for a training program with the Ryukyu Golden Kings, providing another opportunity to further develop their games on the international stage.

     

    For Cebu’s young stars, winning the inaugural championship was only the beginning. With international exposure already waiting, the historic title could serve as the launching pad for the next generation of Philippine basketball talent.

    UST turns early scare into statement, captures first Shakey’s Collegiate crown 

    The University of Santo Tomas proved that championship teams are not defined by how they start, but by how they respond.

     

    After dropping the opening set against the College of St. Benilde, the Golden Tigresses quickly flipped the script, dominating the next two frames before holding off a late fightback to secure a 22-25, 25-8, 25-12, 25-22 victory in the winner-take-all championship match of the 2026 Shakey’s Collegiate National Invitationals on Sunday at the Playtime FilOil Arena in San Juan.

     

    The triumph completed a flawless 7-0 tournament run and handed UST its first-ever SCNI title, a significant leap from its third-place finish in the inaugural edition three years ago. More importantly, it offered an early glimpse of a squad beginning to hit its stride months before the UAAP season.

     

    Instead of allowing the sluggish opening set to shake their confidence, the Golden Tigresses responded with suffocating defense and a relentless offensive rhythm that left the Lady Blazers searching for answers.

     

    Veterans Regina Jurado and tournament Most Valuable Player Angge Poyos spearheaded the turnaround.

     

    Jurado finished with 21 points built on 18 attacks and two service aces, while Poyos contributed 20 points from 16 kills, two aces, and two blocks as UST overwhelmed St. Benilde after the first set.

     

    The Tigresses also imposed their will at the net, piling up 14 kill blocks throughout the match. Rookie Kim Rubin chipped in 12 points, while Blessing Unekwe anchored the defensive effort with seven kill blocks to finish with 10 markers.

    UST looked headed for a comfortable finish after taking a two-sets-to-one advantage, but St. Benilde refused to go away quietly.

     

    An attack error by Rubin allowed the Lady Blazers to trim the deficit to 22-20 in the fourth set, raising hopes of extending the match. The Tigresses, however, stayed composed, answering with a decisive 3-1 closing run to seal the championship after one hour and 55 minutes.

     

    Head coach Shaq Delos Santos credited his team’s ability to quickly move on from its shaky start and trust the system they have been building.

     

    “Sinabi ko sa kanila na kalimutan na lang muna nila ‘yung nangyari sa first set. Kilala ko naman sila maglaro. Alam naman namin kung ano ang kaya nilang gawin basta dun lang sila mag-focus sa investment namin. May in-adjust lang kmai ng kaunti sa team so at least kahit papaano yumg sistema naa-adapt na. Good start ito.”

     

    While pleased with the championship, Delos Santos stressed that the title is only the beginning for a team still far from its peak.

     

    “Sobrang happy kasi alam naman namin na ang preparation namin medyo ang layo pa. Marami pa kaming kailangang trabahuhin. Good sign ito na nakakuha kami agad ng championship. Ito ang paghuhugutan namin to work hard pa lalo na pagdating ng UAAP.”

     

    The title run reflected UST’s consistency throughout the tournament. The Golden Tigresses swept all five elimination-round matches, including an earlier four-set victory over St. Benilde, before dispatching Letran in the Final Four to book another meeting with the Lady Blazers.

     

    St. Benilde showed promise after capitalizing on UST’s early jitters to grab the first set, but the momentum quickly shifted as the Tigresses settled into their game.

     

    Camila Bartolome led the Lady Blazers with 16 points, while Mary Grace Borromeo added 12 in the runner-up finish.

    Myla Pablo sees Nxled’s chemistry growing as Gel Cayuna settles into setter role 

    Nxled’s newest playmaker may have arrived with an impressive résumé, but for Myla Pablo, the real breakthrough is happening beyond the stat sheet.

     

    After just two matches together, the veteran outside hitter believes Gel Cayuna is beginning to unlock the chemistry that could elevate the Chameleons into one of the PVL’s more dangerous teams.

     

    That progress was evident during Nxled’s convincing straight-set victory over Capital1 in the 2026 PVL On Tour, where Cayuna efficiently distributed the offense with 17 excellent sets while Pablo finished as the team’s leading scorer with 17 points.

     

    For Pablo, the performance wasn’t simply about numbers. It was proof that the team’s growing familiarity is starting to translate into smoother execution on the floor.

     

    “Well, Gel Cayuna is one of the best setters talaga sa PVL,” Pablo told reporters.

     

    “Nung una talaga medyo nahirapan talaga lahat kasi ‘yung communication ng bawa’t isa, pero ngayon naman, nakukuha niya ‘yung mga gusto i-set ng mga spikers din talaga.”

     

    Cayuna arrived at Nxled during the offseason after Cignal took a leave of absence from the league, bringing with her five Best Setter awards and years of experience directing elite offenses.

     

    But joining a new team also meant learning a different group of hitters, each with unique timing, tendencies, and preferred sets.

     

    Pablo revealed that beyond their work in training, she has constantly reminded Cayuna to stay patient and trust the process instead of trying to force everything into place immediately.

    “Sabi ko sa kanya, patience lang talaga at huwag siyang mataranta at pangunahan ang lahat ng ginagawa niya,” she added.

    The early signs have been encouraging, as Nxled continues to build cohesion while integrating new pieces into its lineup ahead of the regular season.

     

    Pablo also praised the PVL On Tour’s “all-to-play” format, saying it has accelerated the team’s development by allowing every player meaningful minutes on the court.

     

    Rather than relying heavily on a small rotation, the preseason tournament has given the Chameleons an opportunity to evaluate their depth while helping everyone become comfortable within the team’s system.

     

    “Actually, una pa lang alam na namin ‘yung all-to-play sa PVL On Tour. Masaya kami na lahat makakalaro kasi siyempre minsan lang din naman mangyari ito,” Pablo said.

     

    “Kaya sabi namin sa mga kasama namin na pag pinasok sa loob ng court, kailangan ibigay ‘yung best natin at makinig sa coaches kung ano ang sinasabi sa loob ng court.”

     

    With its first victory now in the books and its chemistry steadily improving, Nxled hopes to continue building momentum when it returns to action against Galeries Tower on Aug. 1 in Polomolok, South Cotabato.

    Action resumes Saturday at the Chavit Coliseum in Ilocos Sur, with the Solar Spikers facing the Nxled Chameleons at 4 p.m. before the High Speed Hitters battle the Choco Mucho Flying Titans in the 6:30 p.m. main event.

     

    Capital1 faces an immediate challenge after losing several of its biggest names to national team duties. With Bella Belen, Vanie Gandler, and Erika Santos unavailable, the Solar Spikers will lean on the next wave of talent led by No. 2 overall rookie pick Detdet Pepito.

     

    Even without their top wing scorers, Capital1 still boasts one of the deeper middle rotations in the tournament.     Fran Yu dedicates Titan Ultra’s first PBA win to late childhood friend JV Gallego 

    For Fran Yu, Titan Ultra’s long-awaited breakthrough victory meant far more than ending a losing streak.

     

    Moments after helping the Giant Risers score a stunning 103-87 upset of defending champion TNT in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup on Wednesday, the veteran guard made it clear who the win was really for.

     

    “Thank you, tol, binigay mo yung panalo sa amin,” he said with a smile after Titan Ultra finally entered the win column.

     

    “Para sa kanya itong game na ito.”

     

    The heartfelt message was for former Batang Gilas guard and NCAA champion JV Gallego, Yu’s childhood best friend who tragically passed away in a vehicular accident along the NLEX early Saturday morning. He was 28.

     

    While the victory gave Titan Ultra something to celebrate, it also became a deeply emotional night for Yu, who has spent the past week grieving someone who had been part of nearly every step of his basketball journey.

     

    Long before either reached the collegiate or professional ranks, Yu and Gallego were teammates at Chiang Kai Shek College, where they formed one of the school’s most dependable backcourts from grade school through high school.

     

    “One-two punch talaga kami nun sa Chiang Kai from grade school to high school,” Yu recalled. “Lagi lang akong under his wings kasi ako yung point guard, siya yung scorer sa team namin.”

    Their careers eventually took different paths.

     

    Gallego first suited up for National University before transferring to San Beda, while Yu continued his development at the University of the East before moving to Colegio de San Juan de Letran.

    Even as opponents, their friendship never changed.

     

    “Nagkalaban na kami,” he said. “Masaya lang balikan lahat ng memories na magkasama kami tsaka nung magkalaban na kami.”

     

    Fate, however, gave them one final chance to reconnect.

     

    Yu revealed they had reunited on Friday night—just hours before Gallego’s fatal accident. He never imagined it would be the last time they would see each other.

     

    “Ang daming tumawag sa akin nung umaga. Nung una, hindi ako makapaniwala,” Yu said, recalling the moment he learned of the heartbreaking news through mutual friends.

     

    Since then, the Titan Ultra playmaker has made it a point to visit Gallego’s wake every evening, hoping to honor the friendship they had built over so many years.

     

    “Every night, pumupunta ako kasi nga matagal kaming hindi nagkita,” he said. “Ano ba naman yung one week na magpunta ka sa wake niya para maalala mo lahat.”

     

    Playing with a heavy heart, Yu contributed five points and orchestrated Titan Ultra’s offense with a game-high 11 assists as the Giant Risers snapped their three-game skid and secured their first victory of the conference.

     

    To him, it wasn’t a coincidence.

     

    Yu believes Gallego was watching over him all night, giving him the strength to play through the grief.

     

    “Lagi kong pinagdadasal sa kanya na sana lagi niya akong gabayan sa game, gabayan niya yung family niya,” he said. “At saka binigyan niya ako ng lakas ngayon para maglaro.

     

    “Mami-miss namin siya ng mga kaibigan namin.”

    Roger Pogoy never had to think twice about where he wanted to spend the next chapter of his career.

     

    After nearly a decade of wearing TNT colors, the veteran guard has committed to staying with the only PBA franchise he has ever known, signing a three-year contract extension with the Tropang 5G ahead of the new conference.

     

    The deal keeps one of TNT’s longest-tenured stars in the fold as the franchise continues its pursuit of another championship following a string of Finals appearances.

     

    For Pogoy, the extension represents more than job security—it is a vote of confidence that he intends to repay on the court.

     

    “Thankful ako kasi yun nga, sa management—Boss MVP, Boss Ricky, Boss Jolas, Boss Chot —na nagtiwala pa rin sila sa akin,” Pogoy told One Sports during the Tropang 5G’s media day.

     

    “Thankful ako na in-extend nila ako [at] dito pa rin ako sa TNT.”

     

    Since being selected by TNT in the 2016 PBA Rookie Draft, Pogoy has developed into one of the league’s premier two-way guards, playing a vital role in multiple championship runs while becoming one of the team’s most reliable scorers and defenders.

    A week after pushing the Southeast Asian champions to a thrilling five-set battle in Leg 1, the Filipinos were unable to finish key stretches this time, bowing to Cambodia, 20-25, 21-25, 24-26, in their opening match of the 2026 SEA V Cup Leg 2 on Thursday at the Jakarta International Velodrome.

     

    The defeat immediately puts the Philippines in a difficult position in Pool A, with a showdown against host Indonesia on Friday now carrying must-win implications if Alas Men hopes to keep its semifinal aspirations alive.

     

    The latest meeting looked nothing like their marathon clash in Candon, where the Filipinos forced the eventual champions to five sets before falling, 23-25, 30-28, 20-25, 25-22, 8-15.
