    The Philippine men’s volleyball team opens its campaign in Leg 2 of the 2026 SEA V Cup on Thursday at the Jakarta International Velodrome with a familiar challenge waiting on the other side of the net — reigning Leg 1 champion Cambodia.

     

    For the Filipinos, the matchup offers more than just another pool game. It is an opportunity to avenge the painful five-set defeat that ultimately denied them a semifinal berth in Candon City, Ilocos Sur and relegated them to a fifth-place finish, their lowest placing in the tournament.

    Despite the disappointing result in the opening leg, Frigoni has stayed true to his long-term vision. 

     

    Rather than overhaul his roster, the veteran Italian coach is keeping faith in the same group of players he believes can eventually elevate Philippine men’s volleyball back among Southeast Asia’s elite.

     

    Leading the squad once again is Josh Ybañez, who emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest bright spots after earning Best Libero honors. The former University of Santo Tomas star anchored the country’s floor defense throughout Leg 1 despite playing through an ankle sprain sustained before the competition.

     

    Ybañez is joined by fellow holdovers Lloyd Josafat, Louie Ramirez, Vince Lorenzo, and beach volleyball standout Jude Garcia, who impressed in his long-awaited indoor national team debut.

    Leg 1 showed flashes of promise despite the disappointing finish.

     

    The Philippines pushed eventual champion Cambodia to five sets in its opening assignment before falling, 25-23, 28-30, 25-20, 22-25, 15-8. The heartbreaking defeat proved costly, as Alas eventually missed out on the semifinals after another loss to Indonesia.

     

    Still, the team avoided a winless campaign by ending the tournament on a positive note with a convincing straight-set victory over Myanmar, 25-21, 28-26, 25-22.

     

    That closing win gave the Filipinos momentum heading into Jakarta and offered a glimpse of the progress Frigoni believes his young squad is making despite limited time together.

     

    The Italian mentor has also made it clear that while established stars such as Bryan Bagunas, Marck Espejo, and Leo Ordiales remain welcome to return to the national team, nobody is guaranteed a spot.

     

    Instead, Frigoni wants competition within the program, with every player expected to earn his place regardless of reputation.

     

    Now, the focus shifts back to Cambodia.

     

    The defending Leg 1 champions enter Jakarta with confidence after completing an unbeaten run in Candon, but the Filipinos believe they are a better team than the one that stumbled a week ago.

     

    With another opportunity against the squad that spoiled their semifinal hopes, Alas Pilipinas begins Leg 2 carrying both unfinished business and renewed belief that its rebuilding process is starting to move in the right direction.

    Gilas Pilipinas’ return to the FIBA 3×3 Under-23 World Cup was built on more than clutch shots and championship finishes.

     

    According to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), the national team’s breakthrough campaign in the FIBA 3×3 Nations League Asia 2 was the result of a collective effort from schools, coaches, sponsors, and basketball stakeholders who put the country’s interests first.

     

    The Philippines punched its ticket to the 2026 FIBA 3×3 U23 World Cup after topping the overall standings in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, ending an eight-year absence from the global tournament.

     

    Facing fellow Under-21 squads from Japan, New Zealand, Belarus, Singapore, and host Malaysia, Gilas reached the finals in five of the six stops and captured three championships to finish with 520 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up Japan’s 470.

     

    For SBP Executive Director Erika Dy, the achievement validates the federation’s long-term commitment to developing the country’s 3×3 basketball program.

     

    “Earlier this year, our Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 Women ended an eight-year drought to make it back to the FIBA 3×3 World Cup. Now the boys’ team will also end their own eight-year drought to make it back to the FIBA 3×3 U23 World Cup,” said Dy.

     

    “This achievement is further proof that Filipinos are world-class not just in basketball but also in 3×3. With the support of our sponsors and the commitment of stakeholders, the SBP will continue to put our athletes in positions to succeed.”

     

    While the players delivered on the court, SBP 3×3 Program Director Ryan Gregorio emphasized that the campaign would not have been possible without the cooperation of collegiate programs that allowed their athletes to wear the national colors despite conflicting schedules.

     

    “On behalf of the SBP 3×3 program, I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the schools, coaches, and team officials who supported Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 by allowing their players to represent the country,” said Gregorio.

     

    He gave special recognition to FEU Athletic Director Mark Molina and head coach Sean Chambers for adjusting the Tamaraws’ United States training camp so Cabs Cabonilas and Jedric Daa could compete for Gilas.

    After missing out on the title last year, the Filipino squad returned to the top of the international stage by dominating Texas Pride Elite Team, 8-1, to capture the 2026 PONY International World Series 18-Under Girls Softball championship at the McAllen Softball Complex in Texas.

     

    Representing the Asia-Pacific region, Team Manila completed a remarkable campaign by defeating the host region’s champion in front of a packed home crowd, reclaiming a title it had previously owned during its back-to-back championship runs in 2023 and 2024.

     

    The latest triumph further cemented the program’s reputation as one of the world’s premier youth softball teams, extending a legacy that has brought international success to Philippine softball for more than a decade.

     

    The road to the championship was no easy feat.

     

    This year’s tournament featured elite youth teams from across the United States, including host Texas, along with international representatives from Mexico, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas.

     

    Despite the tough field, the Filipinas rose above every challenge before delivering their most convincing performance when it mattered most in the championship game.

    For Adrian Villados, wearing the Alas Pilipinas jersey again meant more than simply returning to the national team—it was proof that patience, hard work, and steady growth can earn another opportunity on the international stage.


    Three years after making his debut for the Philippine men’s volleyball team in the 2023 Asian Games, the playmaker has returned as a more accomplished setter, bringing with him valuable championship experience and a greater understanding of what it takes to compete against Southeast Asia’s best.


    The Criss Cross floor general capped his comeback campaign by helping the Philippines finish fifth in the opening leg of the 2026 SEA V Cup in Candon City, a result that also served as another step in his development under Italian head coach Angiolino Frigoni.


    “I’m really happy. This is a huge experience for me,” Villados said in Filipino after the tournament.

    “Playing alongside both the younger guys and the veterans was a huge experience for us. Competing in the SEA V Cup is something we’ll definitely carry with us into our next games,” he added.


    Villados returned to the national team carrying far more confidence than when he first represented the country.


    Since his first stint with Alas Pilipinas, the former Arellano University standout has established himself as one of the country’s top setters, winning two Spikers’ Turf championships, collecting two Best Setter awards, and capturing Invitational Finals MVP honors with Criss Cross.

    Those accomplishments, he believes, have prepared him for another opportunity to wear the Philippine colors.


    “I just tried to use the confidence I gained from winning the Finals MVP to help me play well here. At the same time, no matter what happens, we always stick to Coach Frigoni’s system,” said Villados.


    “Coach Frigoni always tells us that as long as we stick to his system, we’ll give our best against any team we face and we’ll be able to compete with them.”


    Villados also considers his journey through different coaching philosophies as another advantage, having previously played under Brazilian mentor Sergio Veloso before now adapting to Frigoni’s structured system.


    While the opening leg ended without a semifinal appearance, the experience gave the team a clearer picture of the level they need to reach moving forward.


    That challenge only becomes tougher in Leg 2 in Jakarta, where the Philippines will once again battle defending champion Cambodia and host Indonesia in a stacked pool with a semifinal berth on the line.


    Despite the difficult road ahead, Villados believes the team is beginning to find its identity and is confident the lessons learned from Candon will translate into a better showing.


    “We know we still have a lot to improve and there’s so much more we can do. But little by little, we’re starting to understand Coach Frigoni’s system. We’ll keep working hard and do even better in the next leg,” said Villados.

    King once again proved why he has quickly become one of the league’s most dominant imports, erupting for 41 points on an efficient 16-of-32 shooting performance. Perez complemented him perfectly with 31 points, highlighted by a deep buzzer-beating four-pointer that punctuated a pivotal third-quarter surge.

     

    San Miguel appeared headed for a comfortable evening after King and Perez combined for 23 first-quarter points to help build a commanding 27-10 advantage.

     

    But Converge refused to fold.

     

    Behind the steady play of Justin Arana and its relentless attack, the FiberXers erased the early deficit and even grabbed a 57-53 lead late in the second quarter, threatening to hand the Beermen their toughest challenge yet this conference.

    That was when San Miguel responded like a veteran title contender.

     

    King and Perez took over after halftime, combining for 44 second-half points as the Beermen unleashed a decisive 41-point third quarter. Perez put an exclamation point on the period by drilling a four-point shot at the buzzer, stretching San Miguel’s cushion and swinging the momentum firmly back to its side.

     

    “I think they came out with a sense of urgency in the second half,” said San Miguel lead assistant Peter Martin, who continued to call the shots with head coach Leo Austria missing his third straight game due to an undisclosed illness.

    Converge continued to fight until the final buzzer behind another outstanding effort from Justin Arana, who finished with 29 points and narrowly missed recording his third straight 30-point performance.

     

    Still, San Miguel’s firepower proved too much, as the Beermen remained perfect through three games and sent a message that they remain one of the teams to beat in the race for the Governors’ Cup title.

    The cost of a difficult July has now been reflected in the latest FIBA Men’s World Rankings.

    After enduring a winless campaign in the third window of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers, Gilas Pilipinas slipped three spots to No. 39 in the updated global rankings.

     

    The drop came after the Filipinos suffered consecutive defeats against two of Oceania’s powerhouses, first falling 106-102 in overtime to New Zealand before absorbing a 92-49 setback against Australia.

    Converge’s blazing start faces biggest test yet against San Miguel 

    Four wins against struggling teams can build confidence, but beating San Miguel would send a far stronger message.

     

    That opportunity now stands in front of Converge as the unbeaten FiberXers put their flawless start on the line against the equally undefeated Beermen in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup on Wednesday night at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

     

    Tip-off is set at 7:30 p.m., with both clubs entering the marquee Group A showdown still without a loss. Converge carries a 3-0 record, while San Miguel has opened its campaign at 2-0.

     

    The FiberXers have looked like a rejuvenated squad after their disappointing exit in the Commissioner’s Cup eliminations, rolling past the Titan Ultra Giant Risers, surviving Terrafirma in a thriller, and then overwhelming the Macau Giant Pandas with a 149-point explosion.

     

    But none of those opponents possessed the pedigree of a San Miguel squad loaded with proven stars and reinforced by high-scoring import George King.

     

    The Beermen have also enjoyed a comfortable start, dispatching Macau, 123-109, before fending off Terrafirma, 109-104, to set up what could be the first true measuring stick game for both contenders.   

     

    At the heart of the contest will be a battle that could define the evening.

     

    Justin Arana has emerged as arguably the hottest local player in the conference, erupting for back-to-back career-best performances with 31 points and 11 rebounds against Terrafirma before raising the bar again with 39 points and 12 boards against Macau.

     

    Alongside fellow young big man Justine Baltazar, Arana now gets the opportunity to test himself against the league’s gold standard at center—nine-time MVP June Mar Fajardo.

     

    Converge, however, will need more than Arana’s brilliance if it hopes to remain unbeaten.

     

    Import Jalen Hudson has struggled to find consistency despite the team’s perfect record, averaging only seven points over his last two outings, including a quiet two-point performance against Terrafirma.

    The Beermen boast one of the deepest lineups in the league, with King expected to shoulder the scoring load alongside a veteran core that has repeatedly delivered on the biggest stage.

     

    For Converge, Wednesday presents more than another chance to improve to 4-0.

     

    It is an opportunity to prove that its unbeaten run is more than a product of favorable matchups and that it belongs among the league’s legitimate championship contenders.

     

    Only one unbeaten team will leave Antipolo still perfect. The winner may also walk away with something just as valuable—the belief that it can stand atop Group A.
