    Petro Gazz’s exit from PVL may be temporary as franchise leaves door open for return

    The sudden absence of Petro Gazz from the PVL raised more questions than answers — but team officials insist it may not be the end of the Angels’ story.

     

    In a recent appearance on Noli Eala’s Power and Play, team manager David Dichupa hinted that the franchise’s withdrawal from the league might only be a temporary pause. When asked if a comeback was possible, Dichupa didn’t hesitate: “There’s a very big chance.”

     

    That optimism is rooted in a key detail: Petro Gazz never officially folded. Even as merger talks with Nxled fell apart, the organization consistently described its decision as a leave of absence, not a dissolution. That distinction may seem subtle, but it keeps the franchise’s future open.

    “Walang sinabi na hindi pwede or pwede. I guess it’s an open thing. If we come back, we ask permission to come back again and join up,” Dichupa said.


     “We did not disband the team, technically. [It was a] leave of absence.”

     

    However, Petro Gazz’s return is not guaranteed. Any comeback would depend on the league’s stance and the PVL board’s approval — a process Dichupa acknowledged is still in motion.

    “Nothing final on that. When the time comes, I guess we’ll have to see what goes sa decision ng board,” he said.

     

    While the franchise’s future remains undecided, its former players are already forging new paths. Dichupa appealed to the Angels’ loyal fanbase to keep supporting the athletes who once wore Petro Gazz colors, even as they move on to new teams.

     

    “I hope the fans continue to be supportive of our players, the ones who came from Petro Gazz, even though some of them have gone to other teams. Angels pa rin ‘yan kumbaga,” he said.

     

    For now, Petro Gazz is not disappearing from Philippine sports. The organization continues to support La Salle’s men’s basketball and men’s volleyball programs, keeping its presence alive even without a PVL team.

     

    Dichupa added that discussions with the PVL are ongoing, as the franchise explores ways to remain involved with the league while it considers a potential return to competition.

    The question now isn’t whether Petro Gazz is gone — but whether their hiatus is simply a pause before the next chapter.

    Long before the banner climbed into the rafters, Derrick Rose was already feeling the weight of the moment.

     

    By the time the Chicago Bulls finished off the Boston Celtics on Saturday night and prepared to retire his No. 1, the emotions had been building for days — even years. This was never just about basketball. This was about a kid from Chicago’s South Side coming full circle in the same building where he once carried a city’s hopes on his shoulders.

     

    “I had someone or a journalist ask me, ‘Man, did you cry?’ I told him I cry every day,” Rose said. “And he asked about what. Being joyful, knowing where I grew up, knowing my coming back here, my being practical with knowing the economy, with me being there, and the neighborhoods. And you just know.

     

    “That’s one of the reasons why I came back, is to curate things and to employ people.”

     

    With the ceremony, Rose joined an exclusive group — Michael Jordan (23), Scottie Pippen (33), Jerry Sloan (4), and Bob Love (10) — as the only Bulls players to have their jerseys retired. But Saturday night felt less like an individual accolade and more like a shared victory between Rose and the city that raised him.

    Thibodeau, meanwhile, praised not just Rose’s brilliance but his character.

     

    “The next stop, in my opinion, is the Hall of Fame and there is no doubt about that,” he said.

    The jersey retirement was another chapter in a story the Bulls began honoring earlier this year. On January 4, 2025, Chicago paid tribute to Rose during a game against New York, a symbolic nod to the numbers he wore with the Bulls, Knicks, and Simeon Career Academy — and the night the franchise officially announced plans to retire his jersey.

     

    Drafted No. 1 overall in 2008, Rose’s rise was meteoric: Rookie of the Year, All-Star, then NBA MVP by age 22 — still the youngest ever to win the award. The devastating ACL injury in the 2012 playoffs changed everything, forcing him to miss nearly two seasons and pushing him to question whether he would continue playing at all.

     

    He finished his career with averages of 17.4 points and 5.2 assists across 723 games, scoring 21 points per game before the injury and 15.1 afterward. But Rose has never framed his career around loss.

     

    At 37, his focus has shifted well beyond the court — toward family, business ventures like his flower shop, and community work, including promoting chess among at-risk youth in Chicago. Basketball, at least in a professional sense, is no longer the destination.

     

    “Everybody thinks the the path or the motif was, ‘All right, after you get done, you gotta go back and be around basketball,’” Rose said. “I didn’t want that. I wanted to curate things or be in lanes that nobody was in. Coming from Chicago, when you tend to enter lanes that people are in, you step on toes and certain things can happen.

     

    “So with me having that in mind, I wanted curate things so that I don’t have to worry about any competition.”

     

    On a cold Chicago night, fans still showed up, filling the United Center to witness a moment years in the making — something Rose didn’t take for granted.

     

    “All this, the moment, I’m still trying to take in, I’m still trying to process in real time,” he said. “And yeah, and just feeling grateful, you know what I mean? Like knowing the weather conditions out there, knowing that it’s a Chicago thing to even show up here, to fight through that and still go to an event. It’s huge, so it’s something that I’m grateful for.”

     

    In the rafters now hangs a simple No. 1 — a reminder that greatness doesn’t always follow a straight line, and that for Derrick Rose, the loudest legacy has always been his connection to home.

    Creamline’s road back to the summit begins with a familiar spark — and this time, it’s coming straight from the sand.

     

    As the Cool Smashers gear up for the 2026 PVL All-Filipino Conference, the return of Bernadeth Pons signals more than just a roster boost. It marks a reset for a franchise that experienced something unfamiliar in 2025: a season without a title.

     

    Pons’ absence last year, a conscious decision to focus on beach volleyball, coincided with Creamline’s rare dry spell — their first since the pandemic interrupted league play. 

     

    While the trophies stopped coming indoors, Pons was quietly building momentum elsewhere. Alongside fellow Cool Smasher Dij Rodriguez, she reached the top of the podium at the 33rd SEA Games women’s beach volleyball tournament in Thailand, delivering international gold even as the club recalibrated at home.

     

    Now, with that chapter closed, Pons is back where she has long thrived — the hard court — carrying the urgency of unfinished business.

     

    Fresh from their SEA Games triumph on November 19, Pons and Rodriguez wasted no time easing back in. Training resumed shortly after New Year’s Day, with the duo rejoining Creamline sessions as early as January 2, a move that underscored the team’s renewed sense of purpose.

    “’Yung goal talaga namin is makabalik sa taas, pero siyempre, hindi siya ganun kadaling makuha kaya everyday namin ‘yun paghahandaan talaga,” Pons said.


     “Simula January 2 pa lang, bumalik na kami, nag-ensayo na kami kaya paghihirapan talaga namin.”

     

    Creamline’s identity, after all, has never revolved around a single name. Across 10 championship runs, the Cool Smashers built their dynasty on depth, continuity, and chemistry — elements now coming back into focus. The expected returns of Jia de Guzman, Jema Galanza, and Bea de Leon have only amplified belief within the camp.

     

    “Sobrang saya kasi kumpleto na talaga kami,” Pons said. “Lahat kami nandito na. Si Jia, nandiyan na. ‘Yung mga injured before, makakabalik na rin so kumpleto talaga kami ngayon.”

     

    For Pons, the transition back to indoor volleyball has been intentional rather than rushed. Nearly all of 2025 was spent on sand as part of Alas Pilipinas Women’s Beach Volleyball’s SEA Games buildup, and while her fitness level remains high, the adjustment hasn’t been seamless.

     

    “Physically, siguro conditioned pa kami coming from beach [volleyball]. ‘Yung medyo mahirap and challenging sa’min is yung hard floor ulit,” Pons admitted.


     “Eight months kami nasa sand so mahirap din pagbalik. Pati rin ‘yung timing namin sa palo, medyo off pa.

     

    “’Yun pa ‘yung wino-workout namin everyday sa ensayo namin and hopefully, magtuloy-tuloy ‘yung progress.”

    Just when it looked like TNT had finally wrestled control of the night, CJ Perez decided the Finals still belonged to him.

     

    In a Game 3 that swung wildly by the quarter, Perez unleashed one of the most ruthless closing acts of the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup Finals, pouring in 17 of his 20 points in the fourth to drag San Miguel Beer past TNT, 95–89, and into a 2–1 series lead before a loud Sunday crowd at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

     

    San Miguel had already shown its teeth early, storming to a 33–16 first-quarter lead, only to lose the plot completely in the second. TNT punched back with a stunning 31–11 run, flipping the game on its head and heading into halftime up 50–44, with momentum firmly in Tropang 5G hands.

     

    The fourth quarter turned into a pressure cooker. After SMB let an 86–79 cushion evaporate, TNT briefly looked ready to seize full control. Rey Nambatac’s three with 1:17 left pushed TNT ahead, and moments later, a San Miguel shot-clock violation followed by Henry Galinato’s dunk gave the Tropang 5G an 89–86 edge with under a minute remaining.

    That was when Perez went hunting.

     

    The former Finals MVP buried a massive four-pointer to wipe out TNT’s lead, then calmly drilled another triple to stretch San Miguel’s advantage to 93–89 with 12.3 seconds left, flipping desperation onto the other bench. TNT chased a miracle four to force overtime, but Jordan Heading’s attempt came up empty. Marcio Lassiter sealed the escape with ice-cold free throws in the final seconds.

     

    Behind Perez’s late explosion, Don Trollano chipped in 19 points, while June Mar Fajardo authored another monster night with 16 points, 27 rebounds, and three blocks, anchoring the Beermen through every swing of momentum.

     

    TNT had its chances. Calvin Oftana’s 25 points, including a late three that cut the deficit to two, kept the Tropang 5G alive deep into crunch time. But when the game demanded a closer, San Miguel had one ready to swing—and he didn’t miss.
