    The Premier Volleyball League’s most prestigious tournament returns on January 31, but the 2026 All-Filipino Conference will look and feel very different from the editions that came before it.

    Rather than hinging solely on star power or pedigree, this season-ender is built around a competition format that puts a premium on consistency, depth, and the ability to peak at the right time. 

     

    With a trimmed 10-team field and a structure designed to keep contenders alive deeper into the tournament, the PVL is bracing for one of its most unpredictable title races yet.

     

    At the heart of the new setup is a bold incentive: any team that sweeps the single round-robin eliminations earns an automatic ticket to the semifinals.

     

     It’s a reward meant to separate the truly dominant from the rest, though in a field where lineups are widely viewed as evenly matched, pulling off a perfect elims run borders on unrealistic.

     

    If no team manages that feat, the race tightens further. The top four squads advance to the Qualifying Round, where knockout games determine who moves on. But unlike past conferences, losing doesn’t immediately spell the end.

    The Filipinos drew early momentum from para athletics, where Jan Jayro Palermo struck gold in the men’s long jump T20 with a leap of 6.89 meters. The track events proved equally fruitful as Rodrigo Podiotan Jr. captured gold in the men’s 400m T52 in 1:01.06, setting a new Games record, while Cendy Asusano rewrote the mark in the women’s shot put F54 with a gold-winning throw of 6.04 meters. Team PHI also topped the men’s 1500m T11 through the tandem of Evenezer Celebrado and Daniel Enderes Jr., adding another gold to the tally.

     

    In the pool, para swimming continued to be a gold mine. Gary Bejino dominated the men’s 400m freestyle S6 in 5:32.88, another Games record, while Ernie Gawilan ruled the men’s 400m freestyle S7.     TNT had to withstand a late surge and a nervy finish before escaping San Miguel Beer, 96–91, to seize Game 1 of the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup Finals on Wednesday night at the Ynares Center.

     

    The Tropang 5G burst out with purpose, overwhelming the Beermen with pace, ball movement, and a relentless inside-out attack that built a lead as large as 19. Their offense flowed, the shots fell, and San Miguel looked momentarily rattled by TNT’s depth and physicality.

     

    That cushion, however, proved fragile.

     

    As expected from a veteran-laden San Miguel side, the Beermen regrouped after halftime. The game slowed, the paint became a battleground, and the Finals tension finally arrived. Twice in the final seven minutes, San Miguel crept to within a single point, threatening to flip the script in a game that once seemed out of reach.

     

    In those moments, TNT leaned on collective resolve rather than a single closer.Calvin Oftana and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser delivered timely baskets to steady the ship, while Jordan Heading provided the calm finishing touches at the foul line.

    Game 1 served as an early reminder of what this Finals series could become: TNT’s depth and pace versus San Miguel’s resilience and championship DNA.     A major transformation appears to be on the horizon for the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters.

    Sources close to the team say a sweeping roster and management shakeup is imminent, just after Charles Tiu was officially named head coach.Six players, led by James Kwekuteye and veteran RJ Jazul, are reportedly set to be released into unrestricted free agency, signaling a bold reset for the struggling PBA franchise.

     

    Joining Jazul and Kwekuteye on the expected free agent list are Jayjay Alejandro, Yousef Taha, Sean Manganti, and RR Garcia. The six have allegedly been removed from team group chats and instructed not to report for practice, which was rescheduled to Wednesday following delays in announcing Tiu’s designation.

     

    “Dinelay nila yung announcement. Ewan ko bakit. Pero dapat kahapon pa yan. Dapat nga Friday pa nila gagawin ang announcement para lumamig ‘yung nag-leak na info sa inyo,” said a source familiar with the situation.

     

    The shakeup coincides with ownership and management changes. The team is now backed by Davao businessman Glenn Escandor, father of Phoenix guard Francis Escandor, while the previous management group steps into a more passive role.

    Sources added that Phoenix is also exploring trades involving Ricci Rivero, Jason Perkins, Tyler Tio, and Ken Tuffin, as well as negotiations for rookie draft picks Joshua David and CJ Austria from Rain or Shine and Titan Ultra. Filipino-Italian guard JC Cullar is also expected to rejoin the team as a free agent.

     

    The Fuel Masters, who joined the PBA in 2016 by acquiring the Barako Bull franchise, have struggled in recent seasons. Despite reaching the semifinals of the 2023–24 Commissioner’s Cup under Jamike Jarin, Phoenix has not made the playoffs since and finished 3–8 in its lone conference under former coach Willy Wilson.

     

    With Tiu now at the helm, insiders say the franchise is looking to reset its course entirely — a bold signal that Phoenix is not just changing coaches, but aiming to redefine the team’s future.
