    The Philippine Pickleball Federation (PPF) is taking a more deliberate approach as it prepares for what could be the toughest edition yet of the Pickleball World Cup.


    With elite-level international players now expected to join the 2026 tournament, the federation is shifting its focus from simply participating to building the strongest and most cohesive Team Philippines possible.

     

    The Pickleball World Cup 2026 is scheduled from August 31 to September 5 in Da Nang, Vietnam, where the Philippines hopes to improve on its Round of 16 finish in last year’s competition.

     

    But unlike previous editions, organizers have removed restrictions tied to skill ratings and DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating), opening the door for more professional-caliber athletes from around the world to compete.

     

    That development alone has significantly raised the stakes. Recognizing the deeper talent pool expected in Vietnam, PPF president Shery Cu said the federation will conduct a more intensive selection process across the Open (19+), Seniors (50+), and Juniors (18-under) divisions to identify players capable not only of competing individually but also thriving in team-based formats.

     

    Cu emphasized that selecting representatives will go beyond simply looking at rankings and ratings.

     

    “We’ve been very selective about which category so we’re going to be doing qualifiers in order for us to really pick the best players that we have to represent the country,” Cu said.

    The qualifiers, according to Cu, will also mirror the actual World Cup setup to help players adjust early to the pressure and rhythm of international team competition.

    With pickleball rapidly expanding across the country, the federation also sees the tournament as an opportunity to uncover more high-level local talent capable of competing internationally.

     

    PPF ambassador Stella Almeda Lopez-Lavy believes the Philippines has already shown enough promise to become a legitimate threat on the world stage.

     

    “I think we did really, really well. We had all together like six medals, three golds. So that says something about the Filipinos. And I think the reason why I’m very excited about this year is because it’s in Asia now,” Lopez-Lavy said.

     

    For Lopez-Lavy, however, talent alone will not be enough if the Philippines hopes to compete against more established pickleball nations.

     

    Beyond individual ratings, she stressed the importance of chemistry, preparation, and long-term development among players selected for Team Philippines.

     

    “I hope when they identify the players that they do make that there is an effort made to actually get the team not just playing together but being coached and developed by somebody,” she shared.

     

    With the competition now happening closer to home, the federation hopes Filipino fans across Asia can help bring energy and support to the national team’s campaign.

    “So for me, I was telling the San Beda team and probably other teams in the future that they can use my facility for free in order to be able to train,” Umali continued.

     

    The entrepreneur also lauded Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Patrick Gregorio for supporting initiatives that allow golfers aged 18 and under to access public golf courses free of charge, a policy he believes could significantly boost grassroots development.

     

    “Nung panahon ko, grabe. I always had to ask money from my dad for me to be able to play. But now, because of the PSC and their initiatives, grabe, libre na ang 18 and below to play. So hopefully, we can produce great talent and more individuals to be interested in golf,” Umali stated.

     

    In addition to his growing profile in sports development, Umali has also recently been in the public eye following his attendance at Creamline Cool Smashers games in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference, where he has been linked to Philippine volleyball star Alyssa Valdez.

     

    Despite the attention, Umali kept his focus on supporting athletes and local sports programs, expressing enthusiasm for being part of the broader sporting community.

    At the center of the program is a clear goal, to remove barriers that have historically kept golf out of reach for many Filipino youth.

     

    Under the initiative, 20 partner golf clubs across the country will open their doors to players aged 18 and below, including students from public schools, out-of-school youth, and children of caddies and maintenance workers.

     

    The launch was marked by a press conference and an 18-hole tournament featuring promising young Filipino golfers, alongside key stakeholders from participating clubs who will help implement the program moving forward.

     

    PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio, who is leading the initiative with NGAP head Al Panlilio, emphasized that the program is about changing long-held perceptions of the sport.

     

    “This program will prove that golf is for everyone. No barriers. Walang hadlang,” Gregorio said.

     

    Gregorio also challenged the long-standing notion that golf is reserved only for elite circles.

     

    “We have long accepted the narrative that golf is exclusive, confined strictly to private clubs, wealthy communities, and elite circles. We all know that is not true. So today, alongside NGAP, the Philippine Sports Commission is here to break that barrier, quote-unquote barrier, down once and for all,” he said.

    Philippine Sports Commission expands regional training network with gymnastics and swimming center in Dagupan 

    The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) officially launched Dagupan as Pangasinan’s Regional Training Center for gymnastics and swimming, further expanding its nationwide effort to bring high-level sports development directly to local communities instead of concentrating resources only in Metro Manila.


    The project represents a larger shift in Philippine sports — one focused on accessibility, grassroots development, and keeping young athletes connected to their hometowns while still receiving elite-level preparation.

     

    Adding inspiration to the initiative, the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines donated gymnastics equipment that included apparatus previously used by two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo.

     

    For young gymnasts in Dagupan, it was more than just new equipment. It symbolized the possibility that world-class athletes can emerge from outside traditional training centers.

     

    The agreement formalizing the new hub was signed by PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio alongside PSC Commissioners Walter Torres and Matthew Fritz Gaston, Division Schools Superintendent Marciano U. Soriano Jr., and Dagupan Youth and Sports Development Commission head Finnela Sim.

    For Gregorio, the mission goes beyond infrastructure.

     

    “We believe talent should be nurtured where it is found. By establishing Regional Training Centers, we ensure that children don’t have to leave their homes just to access world-class facilities. We bring the opportunities to them,” Gregorio said.

     

    The PSC also plans to send national team coaches regularly to Dagupan to mentor both local athletes and coaches, helping ensure that the knowledge and standards used at the national level reach the grassroots.

     

    “Our vision is to decentralize access to premium training. Every province deserves the chance to raise its own heroes and champions, without uprooting kids from their communities. You don’t have to come to us, we will go to you,” Gregorio added.

     

    Dagupan quickly integrated the new center into its summer sports camp programs, where students are now learning the fundamentals of gymnastics and swimming during the school break using upgraded equipment many previously only saw in televised competitions.

     

    According to Sim, the response from young athletes and families has been overwhelming.

     

    “Marami ng interested sa gymnastics. Masaya kami dahil nabigyan kami ng equipment. Before we were just using rubber mats, now the kids can perform advanced skills … without needing to go to Manila,” said Sim.

     

    Dagupan now joins a growing list of PSC-supported Regional Training Centers across the country, including facilities in Bukidnon for boxing, Siargao for surfing and beach rowing, Zamboanga City for weightlifting, Cauayan for rowing, and Candon City for archery.

     

    The expansion is far from over as additional centers are already planned for Passi City, Tayabas, Ormoc City, General Santos City, and Bacolod City as PSC continues pushing for a more inclusive national sports system.

     

    Rather than waiting for future champions to arrive in Manila, Philippine sports authorities are now betting that the next generation of elite athletes may already be training in the provinces.
