Alex Eala will begin her 2026 Roland Garros campaign with a familiar face standing on the opposite side of the net.
The Filipina tennis star drew American teenager Iva Jovic in the opening round of the French Open, setting up a unique matchup between two young players who have spent part of the season competing alongside each other rather than against one another.
The draw was finalized Thursday night through the official Roland Garros livestream, placing Eala and Jovic on a collision course in what will be their first-ever professional singles meeting.
That unfamiliarity comes with an interesting twist.
Despite never facing each other in singles, the two already developed chemistry as doubles partners earlier this year. They teamed up at Indian Wells, where they bowed out in the opening round against Jelena Ostapenko and Hailey Baptiste, before later reaching the semifinals of the ASB Classic in Auckland.
Now, instead of sharing strategy between points, the two rising stars will spend the opening round trying to solve each other’s games.
For Eala, currently ranked world No. 38, the match also represents another opportunity to continue her steady climb on the Grand Slam stage. The 20-year-old enters Paris looking to improve on her Roland Garros debut last season, where her campaign ended in the first round.

Her latest appearance on tour came in Strasbourg, where she used the WTA 500 event as her final clay-court preparation before Paris. Eala eventually fell to former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, but still showed flashes of the form that helped her produce a breakthrough clay season.
Jovic, meanwhile, arrives in Roland Garros after her own Strasbourg stint ended in the second round against fellow American Emma Navarro.
At just 18 years old, the American remains one of the promising young names on tour, making the opening-round showdown a battle between two players viewed as part of the sport’s next generation.
Specific match schedules have yet to be finalized as Roland Garros continues its qualifying rounds, with main draw action officially beginning Sunday, Manila time.
For one match, however, friendship will temporarily take a backseat as Eala and Jovic open their French Open journeys against each other on one of tennis’ biggest stages.
