    With composure tested and energy stretched across five sets, Choco Mucho battled its way to a dramatic 26-24, 20-25, 22-25, 25-13, 15-12 victory over the Galeries Tower Highrisers in the Premier Volleyball League 2026 All-Filipino Conference at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.

     

    Rather than a smooth breakthrough, the win came through tension-filled stretches and shifting momentum—exactly the kind of response the Flying Titans needed after dropping three straight matches.

     

    The turning point began in the deciding set, when Choco Mucho found itself trailing 5-8. Instead of forcing plays, the Flying Titans leaned on controlled execution and defensive discipline to chip away at the deficit. A quick scoring burst flipped the pressure to Galeries Tower, and from there, the match slowly tilted in Choco Mucho’s favor.

     

    The contest ended in an unusual fashion, as a net touch violation on Gayle Pascual during a live rally handed the final point—and the long-awaited relief—to the Flying Titans.

     

    The victory also marked the return of Eya Laure, whose presence stabilized the team’s offensive rhythm after missing two matches due to a minor leg injury. Laure finished with 18 points and seven receptions, gradually building her impact after a quiet start.

     

    “Lagi ko namang sinasabi kina ate [Sisi] kanina na pinaghirapan na naming makaabot ng fifth set so trabahuin na namin at i-keep namin ‘yung hustle na magtulungan sa isa’t isa,” said Laure.

     

    Choco Mucho initially looked in control early behind the clutch plays of team captain Des Cheng, who delivered timely attacks and service pressure in the opening frame. But Galeries Tower refused to fade, countering with improved floor defense and transition scoring in the next two sets.

     

    Erika Deloria and Jean Asis powered the Highrisers’ mid-match surge, exploiting scoring gaps to seize a two-sets-to-one advantage.

    Now, the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF), under newly elected president Tonyboy Liao, is looking to harness Valdez’s immense popularity to spark a new wave of grassroots development across the country.

     

    The federation recently reached an agreement with the 32-year-old superstar to organize a nationwide youth volleyball camp aimed at identifying and nurturing young talent, particularly in provinces and regions outside Metro Manila. The initiative underscores PNVF’s commitment to decentralizing access to high-level training and ensuring that promising athletes in far-flung areas are given the same opportunities as their counterparts in urban hubs.

    Liao emphasized that Valdez’s presence alone could inspire participation on a massive scale.

    “So I decided to talk to Alyssa Valdez. Since she is the face of volleyball in the Philippines, I thought that if we bring her to these areas, a lot of kids would probably join,” Liao said.

     

    The federation’s plan was formalized during a recent board meeting, where regional representatives expressed strong support for the project.

    “In our last board meeting, we decided to hold youth camps in the regions. I suggested to the board members from different regions that we organize camps there. They said it was a good idea. They will coordinate with their respective mayors so we can get support from the local government units,” he added.

     

    Adding further prestige to the program is the involvement of legendary coach Roger Gorayeb. His inclusion effectively reunites one of the most celebrated player-coach tandems in Philippine volleyball history — a partnership that helped elevate the Ateneo Blue Eagles into a powerhouse program in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

     

    The reunion of Valdez and Gorayeb is expected to add both technical expertise and nostalgic appeal to the camps, blending elite instruction with the inspirational narrative of their collegiate success.

     

    For Valdez, the initiative is a natural extension of her long-running grassroots efforts. She already operates the Alyssa Valdez Youth Volleyball Camp in key Metro Manila cities, including Pasig, Makati, Quezon City, Marikina, and Parañaque. Rather than maintain separate programs, the volleyball star proposed integrating her camp with the federation’s broader vision.

     

    “She suggested that instead of just using her name, we should partner. We can call it PNVF in partnership with the Alyssa Valdez Youth Camp. She is very willing to do it. In the next few days, maybe tomorrow or Thursday, we will meet again and sit down to plan when we will start. Usually, these camps are held during the summer,” Liao concluded.

     

    If finalized in the coming weeks, the collaboration could mark a significant step forward for Philippine volleyball development. With Valdez’s drawing power, Gorayeb’s technical mastery, and federation backing, the camps aim not only to sharpen skills but also to inspire the next generation of national team hopefuls.

     

    As volleyball continues to surge in popularity nationwide, the PNVF’s grassroots push signals a long-term investment in sustaining that growth — ensuring that the next Alyssa Valdez may well emerge from any corner of the country.

    “In the next game talaga, kailangan namin i-training din pa kung ano ’yung mga kailangan namin gawin,” Pablo added.

    The Golden Tigresses overcame Ateneo de Manila University in a competitive 26-24, 25-18, 25-21 victory. Angge Poyos led the charge with 21 points on 19-of-39 attacks, complemented by a block and an ace, demonstrating her Season 86 Rookie of the Year form from start to finish.

     

    “After fifteen years, coming back to coach the Golden Tigresses and seeing the team respond the way they did today is very satisfying,” said coach Shaq delos Santos.

    However, momentum has stalled in recent days after the Chameleons absorbed back-to-back defeats, the latest a four-set setback at the hands of the Akari Chargers, 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre on Tuesday, February 24.

     

    Despite the dip in form, head coach Ettore Guidetti remains composed, choosing perspective over panic as the tournament enters a critical stretch.

     

    “I consider the game against Galeries a mistake. This one is not a mistake. This one, we played our volleyball – but not at our best. And honestly, Akari played a very, very, very good game,” Guidetti said after the match.

    The Italian tactician acknowledged that consecutive losses inevitably bring added scrutiny and pressure, especially in a tightly contested conference where every win carries weight in the race for playoff seeding. We don’t have to forget that the Petro Gazz Angels are not famous for winning every single game. Last season, for example, they lost four games, but they arrived to win the Final,” he added.

     

    Guidetti’s comparison is rooted in fact. During the 2025 All-Filipino Conference, Petro Gazz entered the playoff phase as the sixth seed — hardly the profile of a favorite — yet surged at the right time and eventually captured the championship. Their run underscored the importance of peaking late rather than dominating the elimination round.

    For Nxled, the challenge now is rediscovering the cohesion and sharp execution that defined their early victories. Against Akari, the Chameleons showed flashes of resilience, particularly in the third set where they extended the match, but struggled to sustain consistency in key stretches. Service pressure and defensive discipline — hallmarks of their opening wins — wavered at crucial moments.

     

    Guidetti, however, remains unwavering in his belief in the roster he has assembled. With new additions bolstering depth and internal competition in training, he sees the current adversity as an opportunity for growth rather than a red flag.

     

    “I know that they can do it. With the addition of very good players in Nxled, we have the possibility to train better. We just have to train a little better and be ready, because it looks like everybody is playing really, really good against us.

     

    “We know if we play to our standard, we can beat basically anyone. But if we don’t, we can lose like anyone else – because this is volleyball,” Guidetti concluded.

     

    Currently sitting fourth in the standings, Nxled remain firmly in the mix as the conference heads toward its decisive phase. With parity across the league and contenders trading blows weekly, the margin for error remains slim — but so does the gap between teams.

     

    The Chameleons will look to halt their slide and regain momentum when they take on the Choco Mucho Flying Titans on Tuesday, March 3, once again at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.     The Philippine National Volleyball Federation unveiled its packed 2026 calendar on Tuesday, showcasing a lineup of major events during a press conference at its headquarters in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

     

    Among the highlights is the highly anticipated 2026 AVC Women’s Cup, and the PNVF is making it clear that it will be firmly in charge.

     

    PNVF president Anthony Liao reiterated the federation’s full control over the tournament’s organization, dismissing reports of possible outside involvement.

     

    With the tournament scheduled for June 6 to 14 in Candon City, Ilocos Sur, speculation had circulated that an external group might oversee the event. Liao quickly shut down such rumors.

    “Definitely, the PNVF will be on top of things,” he said.

     

    Liao added that recent discussions with Candon Mayor Eric Singson clarified the division of responsibilities between the host city and the federation.

     

    “We just went to Candon last week and we had discussions with Mayor Eric [Singson]. Sabi nga niya, Candon will host, PNVF will organize,” Liao explained.

     

    “‘Yun din ang sasabihin niya du’n na they will host, then they will connect,” he added.

    Beyond those concerns, another speculation surprised Liao, that the Alas Pilipinas Women’s team might not compete in the home tournament.

     

    “The national team will definitely play kasi nagulat ako last week, may nagtatanong sa ’kin kung totoo raw na walang women’s team,” he said. “Sabi ko, we are hosting so imposible naman na walang women’s team. I don’t know where that came from pero definitely, ‘yung Alas women’s team will be playing there.”

     

    For Liao, hosting is about more than logistics, it’s about representation. A home tournament without the national team was never an option.

     

    Looking ahead, the federation is also exploring structural changes that could impact Philippine volleyball. 

     

    One plan would allow Alas Pilipinas head coach Tai Bundit to identify and secure national team prospects before teams make their selections in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Rookie Draft—an approach that could reshape how talent moves between national and professional programs.

     

    The 2026 AVC Women’s Cup is just one event in a packed international schedule. The Philippines is also set to compete in the 6th Asian Beach Games, the Asian Women’s U18 Championship, the 6th SEA V-League Women’s Week 1 and 2, the FIVB U17 Girls’ World Championship, and the 19th Asian Games.

    One of the biggest storylines came from an anticipated matchup between two titans, the PLDT High Speed Hitters and Cignal Super Spikers. Cignal, rebounding from an earlier setback, delivered a convincing straight‑sets victory over PLDT. 

     

    Not only handing the High Speed Hitters their first loss of the conference but also reclaiming solo leadership in the standings. Erika Santos and Vanie Gandler spearheaded the offensive punch as the Super Spikers showed firepower against a previously unbeaten PLDT.

    The Akari Chargers pulled off one of the most surprising upsets of the season so far powered by Ivy Lacsina, to rout Nxled in three-sets, 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22 for their first win of the 2026 PVL All-Filipino Conference last Tuesday at the FilOil Centre. 

     

    The 26-year-old winger poured in 20 points, powering Akari to a statement victory while Ced Domingo backed her up with 17 points followed by Christine Soyud who pitched in 13 points. 

     

    Lacsina feels no resentment as she watches her former team Nxled rise into one of the PVL’s powerhouse squads, after a loaded offseason haul with veterans from last Reinforced Conference’s champion Petro Gazz. 

     

    Her own journey mirrors that evolution. After the disbandment of F2 Logistics in 2023, she found a fresh start with Nxled’s sister team Akari, channeling experience and lessons from her previous stints into leading her new team.
