Charly Suarez made sure the spotlight remained on him—and on the fight he has been waiting for.
Instead of merely defending his position as the WBO’s No. 1 contender, the unbeaten Filipino delivered a performance designed to remind the boxing world that his pursuit of Emanuel Navarrete is far from over.
Suarez demolished American veteran Manuel Avila in just 2:31 of the opening round of their WBO International super-featherweight title bout in California, strengthening his case for another crack at a world championship.
The explosive victory served as another message to Navarrete, the reigning WBO and IBF junior lightweight champion, who has yet to settle unfinished business with the Filipino after their first meeting last May ended in a controversial no-contest.
Suarez wasted no time imposing his will. From the opening bell, he pressed forward relentlessly, attacking from multiple angles and refusing to allow Avila any room to settle into the fight.
The American attempted to slow the Filipino with left jabs while moving backward, but Suarez consistently cut off the ring and found openings through Avila’s defense.
The breakthrough came quickly.
A crushing right hand stunned Avila before Suarez followed with a short left hook that sent the 34-year-old American crashing to one knee. Although Avila beat the count, he struggled to regain his footing, prompting referee Ivan Guillermo to wave off the contest with the WBO International super-featherweight title on the line.

The emphatic finish highlighted the power Suarez and his camp had been working to develop ahead of the fight.
“Pinag-handaan namin ni coach Delfin (Boholst) ang laban at focus ng training ay power,” Suarez said.
Now firmly established as the WBO’s No. 1 contender, Suarez believes he has every reason to face Navarrete next. Aside from being the mandatory challenger, the World Boxing Organization previously ordered a rematch after their initial encounter was declared a no-contest.
However, Navarrete opted for a title unification bout against IBF champion Eduardo Nunez last February after receiving approval from the WBO to postpone the mandatory defense. The Mexican champion is now reportedly in discussions for another unification fight against WBC titleholder O’Shaquie Foster, leaving Suarez once again waiting for clarity.
Rather than returning to the Philippines, Suarez plans to remain in Las Vegas until his next assignment is finalized. The Filipino has spent the last three months training under coach Delfin Boholst at Ed Belanger’s SPLIT-T Boxing Gym as he prepares for whichever opportunity comes first.
One name that has surfaced is former three-division world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Vasyl Lomachenko, who is rumored to be considering a return after last fighting in 2024.
While Suarez acknowledged the possibility, he admitted a bout with the Ukrainian legend is not his preferred option because no world title would be at stake.
Still, Suarez is leaving the decision to his team, including veteran promoter Sampson Lewkowicz.
Whether it leads to a long-awaited rematch with Navarrete or another high-profile challenge, the Filipino contender has already done his part inside the ring—making a statement that will be difficult for the champions of the division to ignore.
