    Zavier Lucero hopes Asian Games call-up brings first Gilas Pilipinas 

    For Zavier Lucero, making the Gilas Pilipinas preliminary roster is more than simply another name on a 30-man list. It represents a possible first step toward finally wearing the national team jersey he has long wanted to earn.

     

    The Magnolia Hotshots forward was included in the preliminary pool for the 20th Asian Games in Japan next month, putting him within reach of a potential national team debut under head coach Tim Cone.

     

    “Hopefully, I’m on that short list too and get to represent the country for the first time,” he told Tiebreaker Times Wednesday night, shortly after the Hotshots beat Phoenix for their third straight win in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup.

     

    Lucero still has work to do before that dream becomes reality. The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has only submitted the long list required for the Asian Games, with Cone and his coaching staff still tasked with trimming the pool down to the final 12-man roster.

     

    Still, the opportunity gives the 29-year-old a fresh chance after coming close to joining Gilas in the past.

     

    The former University of the Philippines standout was initially part of the national team pool for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025, only to be removed while his eligibility was being verified. The Asian Games’ more relaxed eligibility rules could now work in his favor, particularly with the absence of several overseas-based Filipino players.

    On the court, Lucero offers the type of physicality and athleticism that could make him an intriguing option for the frontcourt. His ability to defend, rebound and battle inside gives Cone another potential piece as the Philippines tries to defend the Asian Games gold medal it won in 2023.

     

    But Lucero knows being considered is still a long way from making the final cut.

    For now, he is simply embracing the opportunity and allowing himself to dream about what could be his biggest basketball honor yet.

     

    “It’s bigger than anything I’ve ever been a part of, so I’m very thankful to be considered,” said Lucero.

     

    “Like I said … Hopefully I’ll make that short list. I’m excited. I’m excited at the possibility, and it’s an honor.”

     

    For a player who has already experienced the highs of college and professional basketball, the possibility of finally representing the Philippines could be the next major chapter in Lucero’s career.

    Bennie Boatwright ruled out of Asian Games as Gilas Pilipinas suffers major blow

    Gilas Pilipinas has suffered a major blow ahead of the upcoming 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, with head coach Tim Cone confirming that naturalization prospect Bennie Boatwright will miss the tournament.

     

    Cone made the announcement during an appearance on Power and Play, the sports program hosted by former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Noli Eala, revealing that Boatwright will not receive his Philippine naturalization papers in time for the Asian Games.

     

    “Bennie is out there, he won’t be able to play in either tournament,” Cone said.

    The 30-year-old forward could also miss the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, where the Philippines are scheduled to host Jordan and Iraq in August.

     

    “There is a slight possibility he could play in the window, the FIBA tournament with Iran and Jordan,” Cone said.

    “The Asian Games is obviously the tournament in Japan but Bennie won’t be available because his papers didn’t come in time. Japan has stricken him in the list. But there is a slight possibility he can make it for the window.”

     

    While Boatwright’s absence is a setback, Cone received some positive news regarding another key piece of the Gilas lineup.

     

    Naturalized star Justin Brownlee is expected to suit up for both the FIBA window and the Asian Games, provided he is fully healthy by then.

     

    “We expect Justin to play on that. Assuming he is 100 percent. By that time, so basically, Justin for the FIBA window, and Justin for the Asian Games,” Cone said.

     

    Brownlee’s availability will be closely monitored after the veteran forward dealt with several injuries in recent months, including issues involving his knee, leg and hamstring that have limited his playing time for Gilas.

     

    Cone will have to manage two different Gilas squads for the two competitions, with Dwight Ramos, Carl Tamayo and Kevin Quiambao unavailable for the Asian Games because of their commitments to clubs in Japan and South Korea.

     

    Despite the personnel challenges, the Philippines will enter the Asian Games as the defending champions after ending a 57-year wait for the men’s basketball gold medal with their triumph at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.

     

    With Boatwright out and several key players unavailable, Cone will now have to find the right combination to defend the Philippines’ Asian Games crown in Nagoya.

    “Bigger than making the NBA”: Remy Martin hoping to realise Gilas Pilipinas dream

    Filipino-American guard Remy Martin is in Taiwan with Strong Group Athletics, chasing a third consecutive William Jones Cup title. But beyond helping his team make history, Martin is hoping the tournament brings him one step closer to another long-standing dream: representing the Philippines with Gilas Pilipinas.

     

    For Martin, wearing the Philippine colors would be the fulfillment of a dream he has carried since high school.

     

    “First, I’m just happy to be in the Philippines. This feels like home, you know? I have my family in Tarlac. So I come home here almost every year. Just to get to actually play and represent the country I have been waiting for since high school, it’s been a dream come true to me,” Martin said during media day.

    “I’m always grateful to play basketball, but it makes it so much more special now because I get to play for the Philippines.”

     

    Martin, whose mother is Filipina, has never shied away from his Filipino roots. He came close to joining Gilas Pilipinas for the 2025 Southeast Asian Games, but his hopes were dashed when he was ultimately ruled ineligible after host country Thailand imposed restrictions on the participation of foreign players.

     

    Still, Martin has not given up on his national-team aspirations.

     

    “I hope that one day, Gilas gives me the opportunity, because that is my dream come true. That is bigger than making it to the NBA for me,” he said.

    “I have been watching them since I was young and always wanted to be on that type of platform.”

     

    One of the biggest hurdles in Martin’s bid to represent the Philippines has been his failure to secure a Philippine passport before turning 16, a requirement under FIBA eligibility rules for players seeking to represent a country through nationality.

     

    However, Martin remains hopeful after players such as Quentin Millora-Brown and Mike Phillips were granted local status after initially being classified as FIBA naturalized players.

     

    “I hope the country and FIBA sees that. I just didn’t get my passport. I have just been a dual citizen. If I’m dual before 16, we have a strong case for it,” Martin said.

     

    “I think it’s just going through the right people and having people help me push it because there’s no reason why I shouldn’t be on a Gilas uniform. That is my dream.”

     

    Martin also believes he has what it takes to contribute if given the opportunity, while acknowledging that the final decision ultimately rests with the coaching staff.

     

    “Everything about basketball, I think I’m good enough. I think I’m able to play at the highest level. But everything is system. If coach may feel like I don’t fit the team, then that’s on them. I understand, it’s basketball. Everybody wants us to win,” he said.

     

    “But I think I’m one of the guys to help the Philippines win, and I think that if I have the opportunity, and if it was up to me, I would have been playing in the Philippines for years now. If I have the opportunity, I will always take it.”

     

    Martin’s journey has taken him around the basketball world since going undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft. He was later selected 40th overall by the Cleveland Charge in the NBA G League and has since played in several leagues overseas, including stints in Greece and Iceland.

     

    Now 28, Martin is back in the Philippines orbit with Strong Group Athletics, with another chance to showcase his game at the William Jones Cup—and, perhaps, strengthen his case for the Gilas Pilipinas opportunity he has been waiting for since he was a teenager.

    For Tim Cone, a record-breaking coaching career will only feel complete if he can lead Gilas Pilipinas back to the Olympic Games.

     

    Already regarded as the most accomplished coach in Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) history, Cone has built a legacy few can match. Yet despite winning multiple championships and rewriting the league’s record books, the veteran mentor believes his greatest achievement still lies ahead.

     

    Since taking over the Alaska Air Force in 1989, Cone has established himself as one of the winningest coaches in Asian basketball. The American tactician has captured a record 26 PBA championships, including two elusive Grand Slam titles, while earning five PBA Coach of the Year awards. He also became the first coach in league history to surpass the 1,000-win mark, cementing his place among Philippine basketball’s all-time greats.

    However, as he enters the latter stages of his coaching career, Cone revealed that his focus has shifted beyond collecting domestic titles. Instead, he hopes to leave behind a lasting legacy by guiding Gilas Pilipinas back to the sport’s biggest stage—the Olympic Games.

     

    “The championships are getting more and more special the older I get, because I know that’s not an infinite number anymore. Before, when I was 35 or 40, I didn’t think about the end. But I think about the end more often these days. So every one now is really special, and that’s why I’m also enjoying the Gilas team. It’s just as hard, if not harder, than these Game 7s,” Cone said during an interview with The GAME.

     

    The 68-year-old admitted that representing the Philippines has given him a renewed sense of purpose, with international success now outweighing even the thrill of winning PBA championships.

     

    “Well, I’d like to go to the World Cup, that’s for darn sure. And even better if we go to the Olympics. I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to do that, but that’s really the legacy I would like to leave more than anything else,” he added.

    Cone has already brought Gilas close to achieving one of those goals. In 2024, he steered the national team to the semifinals of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in Riga, Latvia, raising hopes that the Philippines could end its decades-long Olympic basketball drought.

     

    The country has not qualified for the Olympic men’s basketball tournament since the 1972 Munich Games, making an Olympic berth one of the most coveted achievements in Philippine basketball.

    The road ahead, however, remains challenging.

     

    Gilas Pilipinas enters the next phase of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers after finishing third in Group A with a 2-4 record. Consecutive defeats to New Zealand and Australia in the final window of the first round highlighted the level of competition awaiting the Filipinos as they pursue another World Cup appearance.

     

    Despite the setback, Cone remains committed to elevating the national team and believes that international success would eclipse any personal milestone he has already achieved.

     

    “You know, the championships are great and hopefully they will stand the test of time, but records are made to be broken. But the idea of taking Gilas, the national team, to another level is what we are really working for, and that’s what I would like to leave behind,” Cone said.

     

    One reason for his optimism is the emergence of a new generation of Filipino big men capable of competing against the world’s best.

     

    Under Cone’s watch, Gilas has benefited from the development of towering frontcourt players such as Kai Sotto, June Mar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, AJ Edu, and Quentin Millora-Brown. Their size and versatility have helped narrow a longstanding gap between the Philippines and elite basketball nations.

     

    “It’s just hard to imagine 10, 15, or 20 years ago that we would ever have anything like that. Size has always been our bugaboo through the years. We have always been too small. People would ask why we even play basketball when we should be playing other sports,” Cone said.

     

    “But suddenly, we have guys that can compete on the world stage in terms of size and talent. That’s so unique and that’s an amazing statement for Philippine basketball. We have always been talented in terms of skill and athleticism. It’s only the size that held us back.”

     

    With one of the most decorated coaching careers in PBA history already secured, Cone now has his sights set on a prize that has eluded generations of Philippine basketball figures. If he can guide Gilas Pilipinas back to the Olympic Games for the first time in more than five decades, it would stand as the defining achievement of an already legendary career.

    For years, wearing a Gilas Pilipinas jersey remained out of reach for Sedrick Barefield despite his Filipino roots.

     

    Now, the Blackwater star is closer than ever to turning that childhood dream into reality.

     

    Barefield has been named to the 30-man Gilas Pilipinas pool for the 2026 Asian Games, giving him a legitimate opportunity to represent the Philippines for the first time in international competition.

     

    Unlike FIBA tournaments, where Barefield is ineligible to suit up as a local player, the Asian Games follows a different set of eligibility rules that only require athletes to hold a Philippine passport.

     

    That distinction suddenly places the explosive guard firmly in contention as Gilas prepares to defend the historic gold medal it captured in Hangzhou two years ago.

    While a final roster spot remains far from guaranteed, the recognition alone is another milestone in what has been a breakout stretch for the 26-year-old playmaker.

     

    “Siyempre, masarap sa feeling,” Nocum told reporters after Rain or Shine’s thrilling 85-83 victory over Meralco in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup.

    Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Executive Director Erika Dy confirmed that the San Antonio Spurs guard is not eligible to represent the Philippines as a local player because he did not obtain a Philippine passport before his 18th birthday — a key requirement under FIBA eligibility rules.

     

    The clarification also applies to Dylan’s older brother, Ron Harper Jr., who is currently with the Boston Celtics organization.

     

    According to Dy, the Harper family had previously expressed interest in exploring the possibility of representing Gilas Pilipinas, but by the time discussions took place, Dylan had already exceeded the age requirement.

     

    “To begin with, I don’t believe si Dylan has a passport already. Although they’ve reached out, I think, two years ago nung nasa Las Vegas kami ni coach Norman [Black] asking about eligibility,” Dy shared during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum.

     

    “But he was already 18 at that time or 19. And wala pa pala silang passport.”

     

    Under FIBA regulations, players with multiple nationalities must secure the passport of the country they intend to represent before turning 16, with eligibility considerations extending before they reach 18. Since Dylan failed to meet that requirement, he cannot be classified as a local player for the Philippines in international competitions.

    Kevin Quiambao adds to Gilas’ growing Asian Games absences as KBL duty calls 

    Gilas Pilipinas’ roster for the 2026 Asian Games continues to take shape—but not in the way head coach Tim Cone would have hoped.

     

    Kevin Quiambao has become the latest key player expected to skip the continental showcase, further shrinking the pool of familiar faces available for the Philippines after AJ Edu and Dwight Ramos were also ruled out due to overseas club commitments.

     

    Fresh from helping Gilas in the fourth window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, Quiambao is set to immediately shift his focus back to South Korea, where he is expected to report to the Goyang Sono Skygunners following the national team’s final qualifier on August 30.

     

    The timing leaves little room for the reigning UAAP MVP-turned-KBL standout to join the Philippine squad for the Asian Games, as Goyang Sono begins preparations for the 2026-27 Korean Basketball League season with heightened expectations after reaching last year’s finals.

     

    Quiambao has quietly carved out an important role for Gilas during the World Cup qualifiers, averaging 9.2 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists while providing versatility on both ends of the floor.

     

    His absence follows similar situations involving Edu and Ramos, who are both expected to return to Japan after the qualifiers to rejoin Gunma Crane Thunders and Levanga Hokkaido, respectively.

    Both B.League clubs are scheduled to compete in the B.League Manila Games on September 9 and 10 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, making their immediate return to Japan a priority.

     

    Despite the growing list of unavailable players, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas still has reason for optimism.

     

    SBP executive director Erika Dy remains hopeful that Bennie Boatwright’s naturalization process will be completed before the Asian Games officially begin on September 10.

     

    If his documents are finalized in time, Boatwright could provide Gilas with a significant boost in the frontcourt.

     

    Unlike FIBA tournaments, the Asian Games follow a different eligibility system, opening the possibility for Cone to deploy a formidable frontline featuring naturalized stars Justin Brownlee, Angelo Kouame, and Boatwright together—an option unavailable in FIBA-sanctioned competitions.

     

    As overseas commitments continue to reshape the national team’s roster, Gilas now faces the challenge of balancing player availability while assembling a squad capable of contending on one of Asia’s biggest sporting stages.

    Sedrick Barefield dreams of Gilas call-up after making Asian Games shortlist

    Blackwater Bossing guard Sedrick Barefield admitted that representing the Philippines on the international stage would be a dream come true after being included in the initial pool of players being considered for the men’s national basketball team for the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.

     

    The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) recently announced the first list of candidates for Gilas Pilipinas, with Barefield among the 30 players named as part of the preliminary pool. The versatile guard, however, revealed that he only learned about his inclusion after SBP executive director Erika Dy mentioned his name during her appearance at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum on Tuesday, July 28.

     

    Barefield welcomed the development, saying the chance to represent the country in a major international competition would be a significant milestone in his career.

    “I’m hoping that it’s a possibility. It will be a dream come true, just to go out there and compete with those guys representing the country. It would mean the world, it would mean everything. That’s high-level basketball that you always want to be a part of, that you dream of being a part of,” Barefield told reporters.

     

    The 29-year-old guard has been one of the most consistent performers for the Blackwater Bossing since joining the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), using his versatility, shooting ability, and playmaking skills to make an impact on both ends of the floor.

     

    Although Barefield has Filipino heritage, he is currently unable to suit up as a local player for Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA-sanctioned competitions because of eligibility requirements. However, the 2026 Asian Games follow different rules, with athletes only required to hold a Philippine passport to be eligible to compete.

    That distinction opens the door for Barefield to potentially make his national team debut in Nagoya, giving him the opportunity to share the court with some of the country’s top basketball talents while representing the Philippines on one of Asia’s biggest sporting stages.

     

    Barefield’s basketball journey has taken him across different levels and countries, building a résumé that includes experiences in some of the world’s competitive basketball leagues. Born to a Filipino mother and American father, he developed his game in California before making the jump toward professional basketball.

     

    After completing high school in California, Barefield declared for the 2019 National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft but went undrafted. Despite missing out on being selected, he earned an opportunity to showcase his talent by signing with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the NBA Summer League.

     

    He later continued his development with the Oklahoma City Blue, the Thunder’s NBA G League affiliate, gaining valuable experience against high-level competition.

     

    Since then, Barefield has built a reputation as a well-traveled professional, playing in various leagues across the globe. His career has included stints in Lithuania, Greece, Taiwan, and Guinea before eventually making his way to the PBA, where he has become one of Blackwater’s key contributors.

     

    His international experience and ability to adapt to different basketball systems could make him an attractive option for the national team setup as SBP continues evaluating players ahead of the Asian Games.

     

    While his inclusion in the initial pool does not guarantee a spot on the final roster, Barefield remains hopeful that he will get the opportunity to wear the Philippine colors and compete alongside Gilas Pilipinas.

     

    For a player who has spent years chasing opportunities around the world, a place on the national team would represent another defining chapter in his basketball journey—one that allows him to give back by representing the country on the international stage.
