    Jarvey Gayoso extended the advantage from the penalty spot in the 60th minute, calmly converting his chance before team captain Daisuke Sato put the result beyond doubt with a header in the 88th minute, completing an emphatic 4-1 comeback victory.

     

    Head coach Carles Cuadrat credited his players for refusing to let the difficult start define the match.

     

    “Until we scored the second goal, it looked like everything was against us in this tournament. But what I’m happy about was that we changed our fortunes in the second half and it’s a good reward for the squad,” Cuadrat said.

     

    The victory handed the Philippines its first three points of the competition and lifted the team to fourth place in Group B, keeping its semifinal aspirations alive with two group-stage matches remaining.

    The meeting also rekindles one of Southeast Asia’s emerging football rivalries. The Philippines reached the ASEAN Championship semifinals in the previous edition and famously earned its first-ever semifinal victory over Thailand before narrowly falling 4-3 on aggregate after extra time.

     

    Under Cuadrat, the national team is aiming to build on that breakthrough and make another deep run in the regional tournament.

    “It’s hard to accept, I think for the entire team, that we didn’t play to the standards that we wanted and we expected from ourselves and each other. But it’s a test of character. We have a lot of young guys who will go through a lot of experiences like this. And we have proven it before with the last campaign. I think this will be a good lesson for everybody. We just got to take it on the chin and pick ourselves up,” Gayoso said in a media interaction.

     

    Rather than dwelling on the disappointing result, the 29-year-old forward called on his teammates to remain focused and use the experience as an opportunity for improvement. Gayoso emphasized that the team still has confidence in its ability and believes the young players have the talent to bounce back.

    “It’s difficult because there are different personalities and different mindsets. But it all comes from wanting to win and wanting to do our best. And that’s where I draw from this situation, how I react. And just telling them, let this be an opportunity to reflect and to be able to bounce back,” Gayoso said.

     

    “Because the talent is there. Everybody knows how to play really good football. And we believe in this team. So from here, it’s just taking these lessons and taking these errors we have done and being able to adjust in the next game,” he added.

     

    The Philippines entered the ASEAN Hyundai Cup with a relatively inexperienced squad, with several young players being given the opportunity to represent the national team on the regional stage. Only a handful of players from the side that defeated Myanmar, 5-1, in a friendly match last month were retained for the tournament.

     

    The squad has also been affected by the absence of several key players, including Gerrit Holtmann, Raphael Obermair, and Bjorn Kristensen, among others, as the ASEAN Cup does not fall under the FIFA international window. Their unavailability forced the national team to rely on a younger pool of players as it begins its campaign.

     

    With limited time to recover and prepare, Gayoso acknowledged the importance of quickly moving forward as the Philippines looks to keep its tournament hopes alive.

     

    “We have three more games. There’s not a lot of time to do it. These games are back to back and we are gonna be flying soon. So focus has to be on recovery and adjusting and being able to pick ourselves up. To stay positive and to stay united,” Gayoso concluded.

     

    The defeat left the Philippines in fourth place in Group B, putting added pressure on the team to secure points in its remaining matches. The Azkals will look to bounce back and claim their first victory of the competition when they face Laos at the Laos National Stadium on Saturday, August 1.

    “We have analysed the opposition. Myanmar’s new coach has introduced some different ideas, but the core group of players is quite similar to the team we faced previously. We can therefore draw on that experience,” Cuadrat said.

     

    While confident in his team’s preparations, the former FC Barcelona assistant highlighted that this Philippine squad is even younger than the one that competed in the recent Tri-Nations Tournament.

    “We will field an even younger team than the one that played in the Tri-Nations tournament. At that time, we had experienced players such as Randy Schneider and Patrick Reichelt helping the group,” he said.

     

    The youthful composition of the squad is one of the defining features of the Philippines’ campaign, with Cuadrat revealing that only two players on the roster are over the age of 30.

     

    “We now have only two players over the age of 30, while the rest of the squad is very young. It will be a good test for us. The players have trained very well and understand the ideas we want to implement on the pitch. We hope to produce a good performance,” he added.

     

    Despite the inexperience of several members of the squad, Cuadrat believes the team’s energy, discipline, and willingness to learn can help offset the lack of veteran presence as the Philippines seeks a positive start to the competition.

    Mrowka, who has been part of MLS club Columbus Crew since 2024 and spent time on loan with Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the USL Championship, now turns his attention to building on his debut.

     

    The Philippines will continue their Tri-Nations campaign on June 9 against Myanmar at the same venue, where Mrowka is expected to have another opportunity to contribute.

    For nearly two decades, Etheridge stood as the face of a national team that evolved from regional underdog to legitimate continental contender. On Monday, the 36-year-old goalkeeper officially brought that chapter to a close, announcing his retirement from the Philippine Men’s National Team after 18 years of service.

     

    His departure marks more than the end of an international career. It signals the closing of one of the most influential eras in Philippine football history.

     

    Etheridge earned 82 caps for the Philippines, making his debut as an 18-year-old in a 2008 AFC Challenge Cup qualifier against Brunei in Iloilo. From that moment, he became a constant presence through every stage of the Azkals’ rise, from breakthrough victories to historic milestones that reshaped the country’s football landscape.

     

    In an emotional farewell message, Etheridge reflected on the journey that turned him into one of the most respected figures in Philippine sports.

     

    “Passion & Desire, I never stopped caring, I always gave everything for the team and the country,” Etheridge wrote.

     

    “Qualified for the first time ever for the Asian Cup for the country. First Filipino player to ever play in the Premier League! I made some amazing friends along the way and met some great people. Memories that will last with me forever.”

     

    Among the many moments that defined his international career, none carried greater significance than the Philippines’ historic qualification for the AFC Asian Cup.

     

    On March 27, 2018, with a place in Asia’s premier football tournament hanging in the balance, Etheridge delivered a commanding performance against Tajikistan at Rizal Memorial Stadium. His leadership and crucial saves helped secure a 2-1 victory that sent the Philippines to its first-ever AFC Asian Cup appearance.

    The result became one of the defining achievements of modern Philippine football—and Etheridge was at the center of it.

     

    A year later, he produced another unforgettable performance, frustrating a star-studded Chinese side in a scoreless draw during the joint qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup. Against internationally recognized attackers Wu Lei and Elkeson, Etheridge turned away chance after chance to preserve a historic result.

     

    His influence, however, stretched far beyond the national team.

     

    While carrying the hopes of Philippine football, Etheridge was simultaneously breaking barriers abroad.     His final appearance for the Philippines came on September 4, 2024, against Malaysia National Football Team. By then, the goalkeeper had already cemented his place among the greatest players ever to wear the Philippine crest.

     

    Yet perhaps his greatest contribution cannot be measured by caps, clean sheets, or trophies.

     

    Etheridge leaves behind a generation of Filipino footballers who grew up watching him represent the country on stages previously thought unreachable.

     

    “Thank you to all the supporters who have been along with me on the journey,” he said.

     

    “All I wanted from the beginning was to make a difference and I hope that I was able to achieve that with my service to the country and national team.

     

    “On that note, this is my official retirement from international duty. Mahal kita to you all.”

     

    The gloves may be coming off, but the standard Etheridge set for Philippine football will remain long after his final whistle.

    The next generation of Philippine football isn’t waiting for a tournament to begin—it’s already being built.

     

    In a move that signals a shift in mindset, the Philippine Football Federation has taken a proactive approach to developing the Philippine Men’s Under-23 National Team, launching its early preparations through a talent identification exhibition match held last April 28 at the Mall of Asia Sky Pitch in Pasay City.

     

    But this wasn’t just another friendly.

     

    It was a glimpse into a broader vision—one that prioritizes continuity over short-term buildup, and long-term growth over last-minute selection.

     

    Two squads made up of some of the country’s most promising young players took the field, drawing talent from the UAAP, NCAA, and Philippines Football League. More than just showcasing skills, the match served as a testing ground—an environment where potential could be measured against real competition.

     

    For PFF President John Gutierrez, the goal is clear: accelerate development by raising the standard early.

     

    “The preparation process of PMNT U23 is designed to measure the potential of our young players. By putting them in high-level environments early, we accelerate not just their development, but their readiness to meet the standards of international football,” he said.

     

    That philosophy is shaping how the program now operates.

     

    Instead of gathering players only when competitions approach, the federation is building a steady pipeline—identifying, evaluating, and exposing talent to high-level situations year-round. It’s a model long embraced by regional rivals, and one the Philippines is now committing to fully.

     

    Head coach Garrath McPherson has been at the center of that effort, closely tracking domestic leagues over the past six months to assemble a pool of 40 to 44 high-potential players, most of whom were born between 2005 and 2007.

     

    “We have had a close eye on the UAAP and PFL competitions for the last six months. We’ve selected 40 to 44 players of the highest potential, and this group represents the next cohort for the U23 program,” said McPherson.

     

    “Talent ID activities like this feed into selections for next year’s SEA Games and the AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers.”

    The pool reflects a wide base of talent across collegiate programs and club teams, blending players from traditional powerhouses with emerging prospects from across the football landscape. Goalkeepers and field players from both local leagues and development programs were also included, ensuring a diverse and competitive selection.

     

    For McPherson, however, assembling talent is only part of the process—seeing them perform in real match conditions is what truly matters.

     

    “Talent ID games like this complement traditional training camps. These games allow us to see a group of players in a competitive match with less of an impact on club competitions. When players are placed alongside other high-level talents, you get a clearer picture of their performance ceiling,” he explained.

     

    He also emphasized that these matches could become a regular feature moving forward.

     

    “It’s incredibly important to see players perform in games like these. These matches give them the platform to showcase their quality without the need for extended camps outside tournament periods,” he said.

     

    The urgency behind this approach stems from momentum.

     

    Coming off a breakthrough 2025 campaign, the U23 program now faces the challenge of sustaining progress—and turning it into results. For McPherson, that means keeping pace with the region’s most consistent programs.

     

    “Leading SEA programs like Vietnam and Indonesia don’t stop preparing, and neither should we. The U23 level is critical in the development pathway, and consistent activity ensures we are ready not just to compete, but to take the next step and win. It also provides a sustainable pipeline for our senior men’s national team,” he said.

     

    And the search for talent isn’t stopping at home.

     

    Following the domestic assessment, the PFF is set to take its scouting efforts abroad, with a talent identification camp scheduled in San Diego, California, this May 2026. The initiative aims to tap into the global Filipino pool, identifying eligible players based in the United States who can strengthen the national setup.

     

    In many ways, the exhibition match in Pasay was just the beginning.

     

    Because for the PFF, building the future of Philippine football is no longer about preparing when the calendar demands it—it’s about staying ready all the time.
