    Jas Mathur confirms Manny Pacquiao will fight before year-end after Mayweather rematch delay

    Boxing fans were left disappointed after the highly anticipated rematch between legends Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., dubbed the potential “Battle of the Century” sequel, was postponed. While no official reason was provided for the delay, Pacquiao’s team has already shifted its focus toward securing another bout for the Filipino boxing icon before the end of the year.

     

    MP Promotions Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jas Mathur revealed on Monday, July 13, that Pacquiao remains on track to return to the ring in the fourth quarter of 2026, with an exhibition fight currently being explored as a possible option while discussions continue with potential opponents.

     

    Speaking during a press conference at the Wilcon IT Hub in Makati City, Mathur said Pacquiao’s camp is actively working on several possible matchups but emphasized that no opponent has been finalized.

    “We are focused more on what’s in front of us now. We are working on a few different fights right now for him. Presently there’s likely going to be an exhibition that we are trying to put together in the fourth quarter of this year. Nobody is set, no opponent is set in stone yet. We are still working on that,” Mathur said.

     

    The announcement comes after plans for Pacquiao and Mayweather to meet again in September were put on hold. According to Mathur, both camps are now targeting a possible January date for the long-awaited rematch, although several contractual matters still need to be resolved before the fight can move forward.

     

    “The Floyd fight that everybody wants to know about, that fight is being postponed. Right now, the new tentative date that we have is going to be January. But there’s still other technicalities that need to be addressed before, based on other contractual obligations that Floyd has. So those need to be met in order for this to happen. It was a little bit of a mess that whole situation,” he added.

     

    The delay has created uncertainty around what could have been one of boxing’s biggest attractions in recent years. Pacquiao and Mayweather first met in 2015 in a record-breaking showdown that generated enormous global attention, with Mayweather winning by unanimous decision. A rematch between the two all-time greats has remained a major talking point among boxing fans despite both fighters being well past their competitive primes.

    Amid speculation surrounding the rematch, Mathur also addressed questions regarding the nature of a possible Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, insisting that the bout would be a legitimate professional contest and not merely an exhibition.

     

    “It’s going to be a real fight. It’s not going to be an exhibition. However, scheduling remains a challenge, as both fighters are expected to compete in August and September, which could affect the timing of a potential Pacquiao bout.

     

    Mathur expressed confidence that both fighters remain realistic possibilities and revealed his personal interest in making a Pacquiao-Romero showdown happen.

     

    “He’s a good buddy of mine. I actually want to put the Rolly fight together, that was my plan from the beginning. I was even talking about it last year because I’m already with Manny, and Rolly is also with me, my company which is Limitless. Rolly is also a dear good friend. So that’s a very direct situation.

     

    “Ryan will fight Manny. Manny will fight Ryan. Rolly will fight Manny. Manny will fight Rolly. All of these people are on the table. It’s not an issue,” he concluded.

     

    At 47 years old, Pacquiao continues to attract significant interest from the boxing world. Although his last professional fight came in 2021 against Yordenis Ugás, the eight-division world champion has remained active through training and exhibition events as he considers another return to the sport.

    Mika De Guzman and Jelo Albo successfully defended their respective women’s and men’s singles championships to headline another memorable edition of the Philippine National Badminton Open 2026, which concluded Sunday at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City.

     

    While a new generation of challengers attempted to end their reigns, both national team standouts showed championship poise when it mattered most, extending their dominance in the country’s premier badminton tournament.

     

    De Guzman delivered perhaps the most commanding campaign of the week.

     

    The four-time UAAP MVP never dropped a single game throughout the tournament before capping her title defense with a clinical 21-6, 21-7 victory over former Ateneo teammate and UAAP Season 86 co-MVP Jochelle Alvarez in a final that lasted just 30 minutes.

     

    The triumph secured De Guzman’s fourth consecutive Philippine National Badminton Open women’s singles crown, further cementing her status as the country’s top female shuttler.

     

    “This is so big for me. I think every year andami kong iba’t ibang nakakalaban; a lot of rising stars willing to get the championship, but I’m happy that I’m always there on top being the champion,” said De Guzman.

     

    “As I said, it was different players every year po that are eyeing the championship, but I’m very happy that my coaches from PBad — coach Joper (Escueta), coach Kenneth (Monterubio), coach Ariel (Magnaye), and coach Kennie (Asuncion-Robles) — really helped us to give our best in every tournament that we play, and help us be physically and mentally ready,” added the four-time UAAP MVP.

     

    Albo’s road to another championship proved far more challenging.

     

    Facing fellow Smash Pilipinas standout Clarence Villaflor, the University of the Philippines product dropped the opening set before mounting a determined comeback, winning 18-21, 21-12, 21-14 to complete his third straight men’s singles title.

     

    After Villaflor dictated the pace early, Albo responded with the aggressive style that has become his trademark, taking control of the final two games to finish the match in one hour and 18 minutes.

    Hernandez and Villabrille first joined forces to claim the mixed doubles championship, defeating Lea Inlayo and Christian Bernardo, 21-15, 21-14. The victory marked Villabrille’s third consecutive mixed doubles crown after winning the previous two editions alongside Nicole Albo.

     

    Hernandez later secured a second championship by partnering with Mary Destiny Untal in the women’s doubles final, where they edged Inlayo and Jeya Pinlac in straight sets, 21-19, 21-19.

     

    Villabrille completed his own double-title haul after teaming up with Solomon Padiz Jr. to successfully defend the men’s doubles championship for a third consecutive year. The pair recovered from an opening-set defeat to overcome fellow national team members Christian Bernardo and Alvin Morada, 14-21, 21-14, 21-17.

     

    The doubles champions each received gold medals, championship trophies, MWell watches, and P120,000, while the runners-up earned P60,000 and the bronze medalists collected P30,000.

    The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has officially appointed Karate Pilipinas president Richard Lim as the country’s Chef de Mission for the 20th Asian Games, which will take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026.

     

    The announcement was made during the POC General Assembly held in Pasay City on Thursday, July 9, with POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino confirming that Lim will lead the Philippine delegation in one of the continent’s biggest multi-sport competitions.

     

    Lim takes over the role from businessman and sports executive Al Panlilio, who stepped down after concluding that he would be unable to fully dedicate himself to the demanding responsibilities of Chef de Mission.

    Panlilio, who was elected president of the National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP) in April 2026, informed the POC that balancing his new responsibilities with overseeing the country’s Asian Games campaign would not allow him to give the position the attention it deserves.

     

    “Al Panlilio admitted to us that it would be unfair to everyone if he cannot give his 100 percent commitment as Chef de Mission for our Filipino athletes and delegates in the Asian Games. We accepted his resignation,” Tolentino said to the media.

     

    The appointment of Lim ensures continuity in Team Philippines’ preparations as the experienced sports administrator has already handled similar responsibilities on the international stage.

     

    Lim is well-regarded within Philippine sports circles for his leadership in Karate Pilipinas and has steadily built a reputation as an effective sports executive capable of managing large delegations in major international competitions.     “Ricky Lim is already familiar with the job after serving as the Chef de Mission to the Harbin Asian Winter Games in China last February 2025 and as deputy Chef de Mission to the Bahrain Asian Youth Games last year,” he added.

     

    To help manage the country’s sizable delegation, Lim will be supported by an experienced team of deputy chiefs of mission. The group includes Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas Executive Director Erika Dy, Philippine Judo Federation official Alexander Sulit, Curling Pilipinas representative Jarryd Bello, and Vovinam Philippines’ Jop Malonzo.

     

    Together, they will oversee the logistical, administrative, and operational needs of Team Philippines throughout the continental competition while ensuring athletes receive the necessary support both on and off the field of play.

     

    The Philippines is expected to send a 430-member athlete delegation to Aichi-Nagoya, making it one of the country’s largest contingents in recent editions of the Asian Games. The national team will compete in 40 of the 43 sports featured in the continental showpiece, reflecting the continued growth and development of Philippine sports across multiple disciplines.

    Jeremy Lin’s latest visit to the Philippines had little to do with basketball.

     

    Instead of stepping onto the hardwood, the former NBA champion spent his time in classrooms, health centers, and local communities, using his platform as a UNICEF Ambassador to highlight the importance of investing in children’s health, education, and well-being.

     

    Celebrating his fifth year in the role, Lin traveled to San Antonio, Quezon, and Muntinlupa City, where he met with children, parents, teachers, health workers, and UNICEF partners to gain a deeper understanding of the everyday challenges faced by Filipino youth and the community-driven efforts helping them thrive.

     

    For Lin, seeing those initiatives firsthand left a lasting impression.

     

    “It has been an honor to serve as a UNICEF Ambassador for the last five years, but nothing compares to seeing this work in person,” Lin said in UNICEF’s press release.

     

    “What stood out to me most in the Philippines was how deeply rooted everything is in community—neighbors, health workers, and teachers all showing up for kids every day. It reminded me that real impact isn’t abstract. It’s built through intentional actions at both the grassroots and government level.”

     

    One of the key stops during his visit was the Barangay Arawan Health Station, where Lin observed how frontline health workers support families through nutrition programs, immunization services, maternal healthcare, and hygiene education.

     

    The visit also highlighted one of the country’s most pressing public health concerns. The Philippines continues to face a triple burden of malnutrition, with millions of children affected by undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and rising rates of childhood obesity. 

     

    Through its partnership with the Philippine government, UNICEF continues to strengthen community nutrition initiatives by training local health workers and supporting nationwide policies aimed at improving child health.

    Lin also explored U-Report, UNICEF’s digital engagement platform that empowers more than 25,000 young Filipinos to voice their opinions on issues including mental health, climate resilience, education, and other social concerns. The platform helps ensure that young people have a direct role in shaping discussions that influence public policies and community programs.

     

    While Lin built his global reputation through basketball, his latest trip showcased a different side of his legacy—one focused on using sport’s influence to champion healthier, safer, and more inclusive opportunities for children both on and off the court.

    PSC, NCFP launch grassroots chess program to develop future Filipino Grandmasters

    The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) are joining forces to strengthen the country’s grassroots chess development and create a clearer pathway for young talents aspiring to become future Grandmasters.

     

    The two organizations have partnered to establish the Batang Pinoy Chess Henyo Grassroots Program, a long-term development initiative designed to identify, support, and train some of the Philippines’ most promising young chess players. The program aims to provide these rising talents with structured coaching, competitive exposure, and the necessary foundation to eventually represent the country at the highest levels of international chess.

     

    NCFP chief executive officer Jayson Gonzales confirmed that the program will officially begin on August 1 and will feature 36 young chess standouts from across the country. The participants—12 each from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao—earned their places through regional qualifiers and will now undergo a comprehensive training program focused on improving their skills and preparing them for future international competitions.

    The initiative represents a major step in Philippine chess development, as it seeks to build a stronger pipeline of young players who can carry the country’s flag in future national and global tournaments.

     

    “It marks a historic milestone in Philippine grassroots chess development that would lay the foundation for the country’s future national athletes,” Gonzales said.

     

    The launch of the program comes after discussions involving key officials from both organizations. PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio, NCFP president Butch Pichay, and Gonzales recently met with PSC commissioner Ed Hayco to finalize the implementation details and ensure the successful rollout of the project.

    For Gonzales, who is also a Grandmaster and serves as the coach of the national women’s chess team, the program represents an important investment in the future of Philippine chess. He believes that providing young players with proper guidance and development opportunities at an early age will help them maximize their potential and eventually compete on the international stage.

     

    The Batang Pinoy Chess Henyo Grassroots Program will feature young players from the boys and girls categories in the 5-8 and 9-11 age brackets, giving them access to a structured system aimed at developing both their technical abilities and competitive mindset.

     

    From Luzon, the selected young chess talents are Aaliyan Borden, Alyiah Beltran, Hahn Tee, Gael Navarro, Mark Albert, Orion Paredes, Sofia Saludares, Althea Paredes, Kate Garcia, Marius Constante, Neil Amatorio, and Clyde Torena.

     

    Representing the Visayas region are Frexine Lim, Elisa Johansson, Frida Bernal, Ivan Icalina, Terrence Donoga, Rybarage Entia, Rhian Salud, Lyrah Villareal, Ellysa Maru, Lance Bangero, Allen Albor, and Navi Icalina.

     

    Meanwhile, the Mindanao delegation is composed of Sabella Sy, Elisha Romarate, Eu Pepito, Magnus Carlsen Sanico, Carlsen Andres Hapitan, Yoseff Prada, Roshan Templa, Scarlett Donoso, Claudiah Fabrigia, Danny Romualdez, Aidh Munsing, and Levon Reyes.

     

    With participants coming from different regions of the country, the program also aims to promote wider access to chess development opportunities and ensure that promising players outside major urban centers receive the same level of support and training.

     

    The PSC and NCFP hope that the initiative will become a foundation for producing the next generation of Filipino chess stars, following in the footsteps of the country’s elite players who have competed successfully on the international stage.

     

    By investing in young talent at an early stage, officials believe the Batang Pinoy Chess Henyo Grassroots Program can help strengthen Philippine chess and increase the country’s chances of producing more Grandmasters in the years ahead.

    Reigning ONE Strawweight MMA World Champion Joshua Pacio saw his historic bid to become the first Filipino fighter to capture world titles in two divisions come to an end after falling short in his flyweight title challenge against Japan’s Yuya Wakamatsu at ONE 173: Superbon vs. Noiri on November 16 at Ariake Arena in Tokyo.

     

    Pacio moved up in weight for a major opportunity against one of ONE Championship’s most dangerous and explosive fighters, but Wakamatsu proved too much to handle in the flyweight division, stopping the Filipino challenger via second-round technical knockout to retain the ONE Flyweight MMA World Title.

     

    The Japanese champion’s relentless pressure, speed, and powerful striking combinations created problems for Pacio throughout the contest. Wakamatsu consistently pushed the pace and limited Pacio’s ability to establish his preferred striking rhythm, eventually forcing the referee to step in during the second round.

    “I think one of my biggest advantages is my experience at this level and my ability to adapt. I have been in many tough fights and different situations, and I have learned how to stay calm and make the right adjustments.
