    At the center of it all was Vanie Gandler, who delivered a composed yet dominant triple-double of 24 points, 10 digs, and 10 receptions. Still, even a performance like that felt more like a reflection of the system rather than an outlier within it.

    Now entering their third finals appearance, the approach remains unchanged. “It’s hard for us to answer kasi parang we can’t explain how deep this is for us kasi we know how hard we worked for this. I just have so much gratefulness for the team kasi the player I am today is because of them,” Gandler said.

     

    “The way the team is performing is because we just want the best for each other. It’s really not for ourselves. It’s for each other. And so it’s just, I can’t explain how meaningful it is for me to reach the finals again. I’m thankful to be part of this team.”

     

    Cignal’s rise hasn’t been anchored on individual brilliance, but on a collective mindset—one that prioritizes daily habits over destination.

     

    “It means everything to me, but our focus isn’t that we go to the championship. Our focus is that we train like champions every day, so that’s what we do.”

It means the world because I see that the qualities of a champion in each one of them. And like I said, it’s made me a better person and playing,” she said.

    In just her rookie season, Malaluan is quickly stepping into a bigger role for PLDT, not by chance but by necessity. With the High Speed Hitters opening their semifinal campaign with a tough loss, the young outside hitter now finds herself at the center of a team fighting to keep its title hopes alive.

     

    Their five-set clash against the Creamline Cool Smashers was as grueling as it gets on a rollercoaster match that stretched to the limit before slipping away, 25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 26-28, 10-15, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. 

     

    But amid the heartbreak, Malaluan delivered a performance that signaled her arrival.

     

    She poured in a career-high 23 points, anchored on 19 attacks and four kill blocks, while also contributing heavily on defense with 11 excellent digs and 26 excellent receptions. 

     

    It was the kind of all-around effort that coaches trust and teammates rally behind, especially in moments that define a season.

     

    “What I think worked for me during our game against Creamline is that I always reminded myself to stay focused and calm. At the same time, I kept in mind the instructions given to me by the coaches,” the ninth overall pick in the 2025 PVL Rookie Draft said.

    “I think we all just play very selflessly. Nobody wants to be the star. We just try to cover for each other, whatever that way is,” said Gandler.

     

    “If Erika is doing better in offense this day, I will try to do my best to have good first balls. If she’s struggling, I try to step up also. But it’s not just me, the whole team plays very selflessly.”

    “Cignal’s different in a way that our core changed a bit. Our key players left and now we added some more key players, so we needed a bit of time to learn how to play together,” Gandler said. “But when it comes to the heart, it’s the accumulation of heartbreaks that we had before.”

     

    Even in this win, the journey wasn’t seamless. Farm Fresh struck first, capitalizing on Cignal’s early rust after a 15-day layoff. But instead of unraveling, the Super Spikers reset.

     

    “For me, the first set was winnable. Instead of panicking, like what Vanie said, we just gathered ourselves, looked at where we fell short and fixed our lapses right away,” Santos said.

     

    From there, the match tilted decisively. Cignal tightened its execution while Farm Fresh struggled to find rhythm, committing 27 errors that proved too costly at this stage.

     

    Now, the challenge only intensifies. Cignal faces Creamline next in what will be their third meeting this conference, before closing out the semifinals against PLDT. In a round-robin format where every result carries weight, the margin for error continues to shrink.

     

    “It’s [a lot of pressure], of course, one [miss], you die,” said Gandler. “We don’t really focus on the result, we focus on what we need to do now—if it’s training, the game, each point, each set—then recover after. We just try to do everything we can do to prepare well and not really give ourselves that much pressure on the outcome of the game.”

After reintroducing herself in Creamline’s play-in win over Akari, Galanza took a bigger step forward against PLDT—saving her most crucial contributions for when the match hung in the balance. She scored four points in the deciding fifth set, helping the Cool Smashers wrest control in the closing stretch.

     

    But for Galanza, the comeback wasn’t about individual output.

     

    It was about connection. “Siguro, nag-trust kami nang sobra sa isa’t isa. And kung meron man kaming pagkakamali o hindi namin napuntos, bumawi lang agad,” she said.

     

    “So I think ‘yun ‘yung nangyari, fourth set to fifth set. Kaya nakuha namin ‘yung set.” That trust showed itself most clearly when Creamline fell behind, 1-2, in the match—a point where momentum typically shifts permanently. But inside the Cool Smashers’ huddle, there was no sense of collapse.

    “I think being mentally ready and physically ready but also just, I think coming out the same way we did today. You know, balls to the walls like, literally go for everything. Positive energy. Chemistry on the court and I think we’ll be okay,” said Farm Fresh playmaker Alohi Robins-Hardy.

     

    But Cignal represents the counterweight—experience, familiarity, and a proven system. The Super Spikers already own a recent four-set win over Farm Fresh from their prelim clash at the same venue, a reminder that margins at this level are thin but meaningful.     Still, both sides know that past meetings offer little protection now. “Siguro ‘yung recovery talaga and ‘yung mindset namin and kailangan going to the semifinals talagang mas mag-double o mag-triple pa, especially sa preparation namin, very crucial sa amin ‘yung game plan every training,” said Cignal coach Shaq Delos Santos.

     

    Then comes the nightcap—where pressure sharpens into spectacle. PLDT and Creamline enter on different wavelengths but toward the same destination.

    “Hindi pa naman tapos ‘yung trabaho. Ang target namin is talagang maging top ulit. Gagawin namin yung best namin para makabalik kami doon. Pero syempre, lahat naman, gustong manalo. Magpre-prepare mo na kami for Saturday’s game. Balik kami doon sa one point at a time, one stop, so doon muna kami mag-focus,” said Creamline coach Sherwin Meneses.
