Alex Eala’s road to the US Open will not feature a gentle warm-up.
Instead, the Filipino tennis sensation opens her North American hardcourt campaign against one of the sport’s biggest names after drawing Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen in the first round of the Mubadala DC Open, which begins its main draw on Monday, July 27, in Washington, D.C.
Fresh off a historic Wimbledon breakthrough, Eala immediately finds herself facing the kind of challenge that has become increasingly common as her world ranking continues to climb. Now ranked No. 29, the highest of her career, the 20-year-old is no longer the underdog sneaking into draws but a player expected to compete against the WTA’s elite.
The meeting will mark their first encounter on the WTA Tour, though the two are no strangers to one another.
Eala and Zheng previously crossed paths in the semifinals of the 2023 Asian Games, where the Chinese star survived a spirited three-set battle, 6-1, 6(5)-7, 6-3, before eventually capturing the gold medal.
Much has changed since that clash.
Eala enters Washington carrying the confidence from the biggest run of her young career after becoming the first Filipina to reach the Round of 16 in the Wimbledon singles tournament. She also climbed to a career-best No. 29 in the WTA rankings heading into the North American swing, where valuable ranking points await before the season’s final Grand Slam.

Zheng, meanwhile, remains one of the most dangerous players on tour despite an up-and-down stretch over the past year.
After reaching a career-high No. 4 ranking in June 2025, injuries disrupted her momentum, forcing her to miss this year’s Australian Open before suffering opening-round exits at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
She arrived in Washington after competing at the Hellenic Championship, where she advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Barbora Krejčíková.
Even so, Zheng’s résumé speaks for itself.
The Chinese standout owns four WTA singles titles, highlighted by the 2024 Pan Pacific Open crown in Japan. She also reached the finals of both the 2024 Australian Open and the WTA Finals, finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, respectively.
For Eala, the matchup offers another opportunity to measure her progress against one of the world’s proven contenders as she begins a crucial stretch leading into the US Open.
A victory would not only avenge her Asian Games defeat but also provide another statement that the Filipina star belongs among the world’s best on the biggest stages.
