Eala’s first Canadian Open campaign, however, came to an end in the round of 16 after she fell 6-4, 6-2 to Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic.

Despite the defeat, Eala made a lasting impression in Toronto, where Filipino supporters turned out in force to cheer her on. The city was swept up in “Eala-mania,” with Filipino fans filling the stands and Philippine cuisine even making an appearance at food concessions around the venue.

Following her loss, Eala took to social media to thank the fans who supported her throughout her memorable debut in Toronto.

“Beyond thankful for all the love and kind messages received from people all around the world but especially the Filipinos. I knew it was the last time that I was gonna be out on that court for a while. It’s hard to describe to other people the feeling of being in that stadium full of the fans and all the love,” Eala wrote.

“I’m super grateful for the experiences that I have had here in Toronto. It’s been an amazing debut. So, yeah, I will carry these memories with me for a really long time,” she added.

Eala also credited the Filipino community for helping shine a spotlight on the country, saying the support she received in Toronto reflected the pride and unity of Filipinos around the world.

“I am kind of just like a drop in the ocean when it comes to Filipinos and their pride for their culture and where they come from. Me, I do a lot to kind of represent my country and I’m very proud of it,” Eala said.

“But you see, I mean, the stadium was full of people who do the same thing, right? I guess that just shows you what kind of community we are and what kind of a people we are and how supportive we are of each other.”

Eala’s popularity has also caught the attention of tournament organizers, with the Filipina quickly becoming one of the Canadian Open’s biggest crowd draws.

Canadian Open tournament director Karl Hale described Eala as an “absolute blessing” not only for the event but for tennis as a whole, highlighting the impact she has had in bringing new fans and energy to the tournament.

While her Canadian Open run ended earlier than she would have hoped, Eala’s debut in Toronto showed that her influence extends well beyond her results on the court—and that “Eala-mania” is only beginning.

Alex Eala’s rapid rise on the international tennis circuit continues to capture attention, with the Filipina star earning praise from some of the biggest names and influential figures in Philippine sports.

At just 21 years old, Eala has already established herself as one of the brightest young talents in world tennis, combining a remarkable junior career with a steady rise on the WTA Tour.

Her journey has been defined by patience, determination and a string of historic achievements, with each breakthrough further cementing her status as one of the most prominent athletes in Philippine sports today.

Eala recently reached another landmark in her young professional career when she defeated World No. 3 and top seed at the Mubadala DC Open to capture the WTA 500 title.

The victory delivered Eala her first WTA 500 championship and added another significant milestone to a career that has already seen her break new ground for Philippine tennis. The achievement also propelled her into the WTA singles Top 20, making Eala the first Filipino player in history to reach that elite ranking territory.

Her continued success has extended well beyond the numbers and trophies.

Eala has developed a growing following around the world, with Filipino supporters turning up in significant numbers whenever she takes to the court. From the Philippines to tournaments overseas, fans have embraced the young star and followed her historic rise with pride.

Her growing popularity has also caught the attention of Philippine sports officials, who believe her influence could extend far beyond tennis.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Patrick Gregorio has likened Eala’s growing cultural impact to that of boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, another Filipino athlete whose achievements transcended sport and inspired an entire generation.

“Si Senator Manny Pacquiao mismo ang nagsabi niya. ‘We have a new icon and we have a new Filipino champion,’ and that is Alex Eala,” Gregorio said in a media interaction.

For Gregorio, Eala’s significance lies not only in the matches she wins or the rankings she reaches, but also in the influence she is already having on young Filipinos.

Thousands of Filipino fans have flocked to the stands to watch Eala compete, regardless of where her international schedule takes her. Her growing popularity, according to Gregorio, is also encouraging more young athletes to pick up a racket and consider tennis as a sport they can pursue seriously.

That impact is already beginning to be felt at the grassroots level.

“The younger generation now is picking up the tennis racket and playing as well. And LGUs are starting to build more tennis courts. Mas maraming batang nagte-tennis, mas maraming magiging Alex Eala sa lalong madaling panahon,” Gregorio added.

The growing investment in tennis facilities could provide an important boost to the sport in the Philippines, giving aspiring players greater access to courts and opportunities to develop their skills.

Eala’s success offers young athletes a tangible example of what can be achieved through sustained development and international competition.

Her own pathway illustrates the importance of early exposure to elite training. As a teenager, Eala moved overseas to continue her development at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain, where she trained alongside some of the world’s promising young players.

That experience helped prepare her for the demands of professional tennis and eventually paved the way for her breakthrough on the WTA Tour. Now, with a WTA 500 title and a place inside the world’s Top 20 already secured, Eala is no longer simply regarded as a promising prospect.

She is becoming a genuine force on the international stage.

Her rise has also given Philippine tennis unprecedented visibility. Every victory attracts attention at home, while her growing international fan base demonstrates the reach of her success.

More importantly, Eala is beginning to inspire a new generation of Filipino players who can now see a pathway toward competing at the highest level of the sport.

Her achievements have made her a source of national pride, but her influence could ultimately be measured by what comes after her.

If Gregorio’s assessment proves correct, Eala’s greatest legacy may not only be the titles she wins or the rankings she reaches, but the number of young Filipinos who pick up a tennis racket because they saw what was possible.

For now, Eala continues to write her own history on the WTA Tour.

And with her rise showing no signs of slowing down, the Filipina star is rapidly evolving from a promising young player into one of the most recognizable sporting figures the Philippines has produced in recent years.

  • Alex Eala’s breakthrough run ends as Belinda Bencic halts seven-match streak in Toronto

Alex Eala’s breakthrough run ends as Belinda Bencic halts seven-match streak in Toronto

Alex Eala’s remarkable run in Toronto came to an abrupt end Monday as Belinda Bencic brought the Filipina’s seven-match winning streak to a close with a 6-4, 6-0 victory in the Canadian Open Round of 16.

After weeks of producing some of the biggest wins of her young career, Eala finally ran into a Bencic side that gave her little room to settle.

The 21-year-old Filipina briefly showed signs of the form that carried her through the tournament, breaking the world No. 14 Swiss in the opening game. But the early advantage quickly disappeared as Bencic found her rhythm and began dictating the exchanges.

Eala struggled to regain control after dropping the opening set, with Bencic tightening her defense and applying consistent pressure to prevent the Filipina from finding an opening.

The second set proved particularly difficult for Eala, who was unable to get on the scoreboard as Bencic completed the straight-sets victory.

Despite the disappointing finish, Eala leaves Toronto having extended what has been one of the strongest stretches of her career.

The Filipina arrived in Canada fresh from winning her maiden WTA title at the Mubadala DC Open, where she defeated world No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the final.

She carried that momentum into the Canadian Open, earning victories over Alycia Parks and Caty McNally before reaching the Round of 16.

Her run also extended her winning streak to seven matches before Bencic finally brought it to an end.

For Eala, the Toronto campaign may have ended earlier than she hoped, but it still added another significant chapter to a breakout 2026 season that has already seen her climb into the world’s top 20 and establish herself as a legitimate threat on the WTA Tour.

Bencic, meanwhile, advances to the quarterfinals after ending the Filipina’s impressive surge.

Alex Eala looks to keep her impressive run going when she takes on American Caty McNally in the third round of the National Bank Open on Saturday at the Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, Canada.

The match is scheduled for 8:10 a.m. (Manila time), with Eala entering the contest full of confidence after winning her first WTA title at the Mubadala DC Open in Washington last week.

The 21-year-old Filipina has carried that momentum into Toronto, opening her campaign with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Alycia Parks in the second round. The win also gave Eala a measure of revenge after Parks defeated her at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Saturday’s match will be the first career meeting between Eala and McNally, adding an interesting element to the matchup.

McNally presents a different challenge. The American is known for her versatility, athleticism and willingness to move forward, making her capable of disrupting Eala’s rhythm and extending rallies.

The match could come down to which player is able to dictate the pace early and handle the pressure in the key moments.

  • Alex Eala, Venus Williams doubles run ends in Canadian Open

Alex Eala, Venus Williams doubles run ends in Canadian Open

Filipina tennis star Alex Eala’s doubles campaign at the National Bank Open came to an early end after she and American tennis icon Venus Williams suffered a straight-set defeat to Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova and Japan’s Miyu Kato on Friday in Toronto, Canada.

Samsonova and Kato completed the victory, 6-4, 6-5, to knock out the Filipino-American tandem and advance to the next round of the WTA 1000 tournament.

The Russian-Japanese pair seized control from the opening games, racing to a 2-0 lead before stretching the advantage to 4-2 in the first set.

Eala and Williams managed to stay within striking distance and attempted to turn the set around, but Samsonova and Kato maintained their composure to close it out, 6-4.

The second set followed a similar pattern as Samsonova and Kato quickly established a commanding 4-0 advantage, putting Eala and Williams under immediate pressure.

The Filipino-American duo responded with consecutive games to cut the deficit, but their opponents remained in control.

After moving within a game of victory, Samsonova and Kato fended off one final push from Eala and Williams before sealing the match in straight sets.

The winning pair relied on timely service breaks in both sets while minimizing unforced errors, preventing Eala and Williams from gaining any sustained momentum throughout the contest.

It marked the second doubles tournament together for Eala and Williams after previously reaching the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg Open in Germany during the grass-court season.

Their reunion in Toronto drew significant attention, with fans eager to watch the reigning Washington Open singles champion partner once again with one of the sport’s most decorated players.

Despite the doubles exit, Eala’s campaign in Toronto is far from over.

The 21-year-old remains in contention in the singles tournament after opening with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory over American Alycia Parks to reach the Round of 32.

Eala will return to the court on Saturday (Philippine time), where she is set to face another American, Caty McNally, for a place in the Round of 16.

Although the doubles stint ended earlier than hoped, Eala continued to enjoy overwhelming support in Toronto, with Filipino fans filling the stands during her opening in singles and doubles appearance at the prestigious WTA 1000 event.

At just 21 years old, Eala has built a remarkable career highlighted by determination, consistency, and a series of breakthrough achievements. Eala recently added the biggest achievement of her professional career after defeating World No. 3 and top seed at the Mubadala DC Open to claim the WTA 500 title. The championship marked her first-ever WTA 500 crown and made her the first Filipino player in history to break into the Top 20 of the WTA singles rankings.

Beyond her performances on the court, Eala has also become one of the most recognizable figures on the WTA Tour. Her matches have attracted strong support from Filipino fans around the world, with many traveling internationally to cheer for the young star as she continues her historic journey.

Her growing influence has even caught the attention of tennis legend Andy Roddick, who highlighted Eala’s impact on the sport during a recent episode of his Served Podcast.

Roddick praised the energy and support surrounding Eala, emphasizing that her success could help introduce tennis to a wider global audience.

“Everyone in tennis should be cheering for her, right? You can say, like, don’t pick favorites, don’t cheer for her, but I’m cheering for markets. If we could bring hundreds of millions of people because she is playing, well then, I’m going to cheer for that because it’s better for tennis,” Roddick said.

The former world No. 1 and 2003 US Open champion added that an Eala Grand Slam triumph would have a significant impact on the growth of tennis, particularly by bringing more fans into the sport.

“I know some people might be like, ‘She doesn’t want a Slam.’ But she’s literally carrying hundreds of millions of fans to our sport and saying, you’re die-hards now. This is great for the sport,” Roddick added.

Roddick clarified that his support is not about favoring one player over another but recognizing the unique influence Eala could have on tennis globally.

“It doesn’t mean you like her more. I love Jessica Pegula. All I’m saying is that I want to see Alex Eala do well consistently because of what impact she will have on the game. Not all impacts are the same with players. With players, you know, Alex Eala winning a Slam is more than someone else winning a Slam,” he concluded.

Eala has wasted little time building on her Washington triumph. Just days after capturing the biggest title of her career, the Filipina star returned to action at the 2026 Canadian Open, where she defeated Alycia Parks, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, to advance to the Round of 32.

She will next face American Caty McNally in the Round of 32, scheduled for Saturday, August 8, as she continues her pursuit of more milestones on the WTA Tour.

With her historic achievements, growing international following, and continued improvement against the world’s best players, Eala is quickly becoming not only a symbol of Philippine tennis but also one of the sport’s most exciting young stars.

  • Alex Eala gets Australian Open revenge on Alycia Parks, advances to Canadian Open Round of 32

Alex Eala gets Australian Open revenge on Alycia Parks, advances to Canadian Open Round of 32

Alex Eala made sure history would not repeat itself.

Just days after capturing the biggest title of her career in Washington, the Filipina sensation returned to the court with another statement victory, avenging one of her toughest defeats earlier this season by beating Alycia Parks, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, to reach the Round of 32 of the 2026 Canadian Open.

The victory was more than just another win for the newly crowned WTA 500 champion. It erased the memory of Eala’s opening-round exit at the Australian Open in January, where Parks rallied from a set down to eliminate the Filipina in three sets.

This time, Eala flipped the script.

The world No. 20 wasted little time asserting herself, racing through the opening set, 6-1, in a near mirror image of their Melbourne meeting, where she also dominated the first frame. Parks,

however, responded the same way she did seven months ago, taking the second set, 6-4, to force a deciding third.

But unlike their first encounter, Eala refused to let the momentum slip away.

The 21-year-old stayed composed in a tightly contested final set before delivering the decisive breakthrough in the fifth game, breaking Parks to love after forcing the American into consecutive forehand errors.

From there, Eala never looked back.

She controlled the closing stages with confident baseline play and served out the match to love, completing the victory in one hour and 51 minutes to book her place in the next round.

The win extends Eala’s remarkable stretch after her historic triumph at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, where she defeated Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, defending champion Leylah Fernandez, world No. 10 Elina Svitolina, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, and world No. 3 Jessica Pegula to capture her maiden WTA Tour title.

The momentum from Washington carried over to Toronto, but Eala made it clear afterward that the support from Filipino fans continues to fuel her performances.

“I am eternally grateful. I just came off Washington, so I really feel like this is a celebration,” she said.

“Alam niyo, linggo-linggo ko kayo nakikita, sinusuporta ako. Linggo-linggo ko nakikita kung gaano niyo kamahal ang kapwa niyo Pinoy,” she added. “Kaya proud na proud na proud na proud ako din maging Pinoy.”

Eala also thanked the crowd that once again created a home-like atmosphere despite playing thousands of miles away from the Philippines.

“Thank you everybody who is here tonight, thank you to everyone who is supporting tennis and creating atmospheres like this. It’s really the pleasure of my life to experience these things,” she said.

Awaiting Eala in the Round of 32 is American Caty McNally, who pulled off one of the tournament’s biggest upsets by eliminating reigning Wimbledon champion Linda Nosková.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina, world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, fourth seed Coco Gauff, and fifth seed Mirra Andreeva all advanced to the third round, keeping the tournament’s top contenders on course.

  • Alex Eala eyes revenge on Alycia Parks as Canadian Open campaign begins

Alex Eala eyes revenge on Alycia Parks as Canadian Open campaign begins

Alex Eala barely had time to celebrate the biggest triumph of her career before another challenge arrived.

Just days after making history by capturing her maiden WTA Tour title in Washington, the Filipina sensation is back on court looking to prove her breakthrough was only the beginning.

Eala opens her National Bank Open campaign on Thursday at 8:10 a.m. (Manila time) against American Alycia Parks, a familiar opponent who handed her one of the toughest defeats of her season.

The meeting carries added significance for the Filipina, who fell to Parks 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 in the opening round of the 2026 Australian Open. Seven months later, Eala enters the rematch as a completely different player.

The 21-year-old arrives in Toronto playing the best tennis of her career after a remarkable stretch that has transformed her into one of the hottest names on the WTA Tour.

Her rise began with a breakthrough campaign at Wimbledon, where she reached the quarterfinals to become the first Filipina to make the last eight of a Grand Slam singles event.

She followed that with an even bigger milestone in Washington, where she captured her first WTA 500 title and climbed to a career-high World No. 20.

Eala’s championship run was anything but easy.

She rallied past Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the opening round before eliminating defending champion Leylah Fernandez, second seed Elina Svitolina, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, and finally World No. 3 Jessica Pegula, whom she defeated 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 to lift the trophy.

Her dominant week in the American capital has also established her as one of the tour’s most dangerous players, particularly on hard courts.

Now seeded 25th, Eala received a first-round bye in Toronto and begins her campaign directly in the Round of 64.

Standing in her way is Parks, who advanced after defeating qualifier Victoria Kasintseva, 6-4, 6-4, in the opening round.

Should Eala exact revenge and advance, she will face either Wimbledon champion Linda Nosková or American Caty McNally in the next round.

The Canadian Open also offers Eala an opportunity to improve on last year’s result. In 2025, she exited in the opening round after a three-set loss to former Wimbledon champion Markéta Vondroušová.

This time, however, Eala returns with a different mindset, a higher ranking, and a WTA title already in her trophy cabinet—turning what was once a learning experience into another chance to prove she belongs among the world’s elite.

Villanueva filed Senate Resolution No. 554, while Ejercito, Aquino, Villar, and Tulfo filed Senate Resolutions Nos. 562, 560, 564, and 565, respectively, in recognition of her accomplishment.

“The success of Alex Eala shows what Filipino talent can achieve when it is nurtured and supported,” Ejercito added. “Her victory should inspire us to improve our sports development programs and expand opportunities for young Filipino athletes to train, compete, and excel on the world stage.”

Villar echoed the sentiment, saying Eala’s accomplishments have inspired a new generation of Filipino athletes to dream bigger and believe they can compete internationally.

“Vamos, Alex! Your victory is proof that Filipino athletes are truly world-class,” Villar said.

“You are already a champion, but I believe you still have even greater heights to reach. Once your journey of success begins, there’s no stopping you. Keep dreaming, keep working hard, and continue making the Philippines proud in every match. The entire Filipino nation stands behind you, cheering you on every step of the way.”

Eala’s achievement also received recognition from the House of Representatives, which lauded the young Filipina for reaching a historic milestone at just 21 years old.

The House described her accomplishment as “unprecedented in Philippine tennis,” noting that her success highlights the talent, resilience, and competitive spirit of Filipino athletes on the global stage.

Beyond the rankings and championship trophies, Eala’s rise represents a significant moment for Philippine sports. Her journey has provided young Filipino athletes with a powerful example of what dedication, proper development, and international exposure can achieve.

As she continues her professional career, Eala remains focused on reaching even greater heights while carrying the hopes of a nation eager to witness the continued rise of one of its greatest sporting talents.

“Maraming salamat, mga kababayan”: Alex Eala expresses gratitude to Filipino fans after breakthrough DC Open victory

Moments after capturing the biggest title of her career with a stirring 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 comeback victory over world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, Alex Eala turned the spotlight toward the people who carried her through the journey—from her family and team to the thousands of Filipino supporters who celebrated her milestone from the stands and across the globe.

Instead of focusing on the achievement of becoming the first Filipina to win a WTA singles title, Eala spoke about the people who helped transform years of sacrifice into a career-defining triumph.

“They’re my inner circle. They’re the ones who are putting in the work every day with me, who make me feel like I’m not enduring alone or putting in the hard work alone, because I know they’re right there with me,” Eala said.

Her appreciation extended well beyond her immediate team. The final itself became a showcase of Filipino pride as supporters packed the venue carrying Philippine flags and cheering through every point, even after rain forced the championship match to be suspended a day earlier while early in the second set.

When play resumed, the crowd returned with the same energy, providing the kind of atmosphere Eala said she could feel throughout the tournament.

“To all my supporters, thank you guys. Thank you to all my supporters, especially the Filipino community here in DC and back home, and wherever you are in the world. I feel all the love, maraming, maraming salamat, mga kababayan,” she said.

For Eala, that support began long before championship point. She revealed that the messages she received from loved ones and fellow players before the final became a source of motivation during one of the biggest matches of her career.

“Before the final yesterday, I got so many messages, sweet messages from my family and from my friends who are on tour or wherever else in the world. And I thought to myself, I feel so much love,” Eala said.

That sense of encouragement was reflected in her performance. After dropping the opening set, Eala responded with two dominant sets to stun Pegula and complete one of the biggest victories by a Filipino athlete on the international tennis stage.

The title also propelled the 21-year-old to a new career-high ranking of world No. 20, another milestone in what has been a rapid rise since her breakthrough on the WTA Tour.

The victory further cemented Eala’s growing global profile. What began as a promising breakthrough season has now evolved into a legitimate presence among the world’s elite, with every tournament drawing increased attention from fans and fellow players alike.

Her latest triumph also adds another landmark chapter to Philippine tennis, inspiring a new generation of athletes who now have proof that a Filipina can compete—and win—against the very best in the world.

There is little time to celebrate, as Eala immediately turns her attention to the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada.

Entering the tournament as the No. 25 seed, she received a first-round bye and will open her campaign in the Round of 64 on Wednesday (PHT) against American Alycia Parks in a rematch of their Australian Open meeting earlier this year.
