    The former Gilas Pilipinas captain explained that while his playing days are behind him, he now finds fulfillment in passing on everything he has learned throughout his basketball journey to the next generation of Filipino players.

     

    “I’m far removed from play, but to take everything that I have learned from my experience here, Kasama sa Gilas, and now my experience being back in the States, to pour that into this group and this generation of Philippine basketball, that’s the exciting part. And again, I’m grateful for this opportunity and excited to continue to coach this group,” he added.

     

    Alapag’s return to the PBA also featured a nostalgic reunion with one of his longtime teammates, former league Most Valuable Player Asi Taulava, who is now part of the NLEX coaching staff. The two enjoyed tremendous success together during their championship years with Talk ‘N Text, and Alapag spoke warmly about reconnecting with one of the league’s most dominant big men.

     

    “I mean, it’s great. Obviously, you guys know, you know, way, way, way back in 2003 when my, when my career started. You know, we had a lot of success together. He’s one of the most dominant guys to ever play in the PBA. So great to see him. Just like I said, being back home and being able to see everyone around the PBA, getting a chance to see you guys. It’s funny. It’s only been six years, but it felt longer. But it feels good to be home,” Alapag concluded.

     

    The Road Warriors quickly proved that their opening-night triumph was no fluke. Alapag followed up his successful debut with another victory as NLEX edged Terrafirma Dyip, 101-100, in a tense contest that showcased the team’s resilience under its new mentor.     The Creamline Cool Smashers began their 2025 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour preseason conference campaign on a high note after securing a hard-fought victory over the Nxled Chameleons on Wednesday, July 8, at the Capital Arena in Ilagan City, Isabela.

     

    Creamline overcame Nxled in four sets, winning 25-18, 25-23, 16-25, 25-19, to start their preseason journey with a statement performance. While the result itself was encouraging, what made the victory even more significant for the league’s most successful franchise was the way they achieved it.

     

    The Cool Smashers secured the win without needing to rely on several of their biggest stars, as Alyssa Valdez, Tots Carlos, Bea de Leon, and Pangs Panaga were not fielded during the match.

    “I was trying to be a little too tough, and I thought that, ‘Oh, it’s just a minor pain. It’s fine. I can do it. It’s just tendinitis. And it turns out it was more than tendinitis. I was dealing with it back during the last conference, the All-Filipino event. I didn’t really start noticing it was a big problem until the All-Star event. And then when I was home, it wasn’t going away,” she added.

    Panlilio, who was elected president of the National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP) in April 2026, informed the POC that balancing his new responsibilities with overseeing the country’s Asian Games campaign would not allow him to give the position the attention it deserves.

     

    “Al Panlilio admitted to us that it would be unfair to everyone if he cannot give his 100 percent commitment as Chef de Mission for our Filipino athletes and delegates in the Asian Games. We accepted his resignation,” Tolentino said to the media.
