“You have made the Philippines proud”: Ferdinand Marcos Jr. honors Alex Eala after historic Wimbledon run

Alex Eala’s remarkable ascent on the international tennis stage has not only cemented her status as one of Southeast Asia’s brightest young sporting talents but has also sparked renewed excitement for tennis in the Philippines.

Following another historic campaign at Wimbledon, Eala continues to break barriers and raise the profile of Philippine tennis on the global stage. Her impressive performances, growing list of milestones, and ability to compete against the world’s best players have earned widespread recognition while inspiring a new generation of Filipino athletes to pursue the sport.

In a country where basketball and boxing have traditionally dominated the sporting landscape, Eala’s success has created unprecedented momentum for tennis. Her achievements have encouraged more young Filipinos to pick up a racket, while giving hope that the Philippines can develop more world-class players in the years ahead.

Among those following Eala’s journey is Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who welcomed the rising tennis star to Malacañang on Monday, July 13, to recognize her contributions and celebrate the pride she has brought to the nation.

Marcos openly expressed his admiration for Eala, admitting that he considers himself a genuine supporter of the young athlete’s career.

“I’m a fan, so I’m gushing okay? I’m sorry. I’m a real fan of yours. And one day, I hope I will have the opportunity to watch you, even if it’s not at a Grand Slam – at any tournament. Even just watching you practice would be enough,” Marcos said.

During the ceremony, Marcos presented Eala with a presidential citation honoring her historic achievements and recognizing her impact on Philippine sports.

The citation acknowledged Eala “in recognition of her historic achievements as the first Filipino woman to attain unprecedented success on the international professional tennis circuit, and demonstrating exceptional talent, perseverance, and unwavering determination.”

Eala attended the special event alongside her family and team, including her mother, former national swimmer Rosemarie Maniego-Eala, her father Michael Eala, and tennis agent Carter Lin. As a gesture of appreciation, the young tennis star presented President Marcos with signed caps and tennis balls.

Marcos also highlighted the significance of Eala’s accomplishments, emphasizing how her success has united Filipinos and showcased the country’s potential on the global sporting stage.

“You know, we don’t actually have a protocol for any of this. We just made it up so we would have an excuse to take a picture with you. You have made the Philippines proud. You have reminded Filipinos what a great race Filipinos are because we produced someone like you.

“We, all 110 million of us Filipinos, we are all behind you, willing you on to greater success. If there is anything that we can do to help you, just say so. You will have it,” he concluded.

Eala’s latest achievements have placed her among the most successful Filipino athletes in international tennis history. At Wimbledon, she made history by becoming the first Philippine tennis player to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament.

Her landmark run included a stunning victory over Poland’s Iga Swiatek, the reigning Grand Slam champion and then-World No. 3, marking one of the biggest wins ever recorded by a Filipino tennis player. Eala’s impressive campaign eventually ended in the fourth round against Italian star Jasmine Paolini, but her performance further established her as a legitimate contender on the global circuit.

The breakthrough also translated into a historic rise in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, with Eala reaching a career-high World No. 28 — the highest ranking ever achieved by a Philippine tennis player.

At just 21 years old, Eala has already achieved milestones that have transformed perceptions of Philippine tennis. With her continued development, international experience, and growing support from fans and institutions, she represents a new era for the sport in the country.

More than just victories and rankings, Eala’s journey has become a source of national inspiration, proving that Filipino athletes can compete and succeed on the biggest stages in world sports.

  • Kiefer Ravena retires from Gilas Pilipinas after long international career

Kiefer Ravena retires from Gilas Pilipinas after long international career

Veteran guard Kiefer Ravena has officially closed the chapter on his international basketball career, announcing that his time representing the Philippine men’s national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, has come to an end.

After more than a decade of wearing the national colors at various levels, Ravena said he is ready to step aside and make way for the next generation of Filipino players. The 32-year-old guard reflected on his journey with the national team, describing his experience as a memorable and rewarding chapter of his career.

“I’m done with my career with the national team. It has been fun,” Ravena said to the media while attending Alex Eala’s “Play Mind Games” meet-and-greet event at Nike Fort in Taguig on Monday, July 13.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Ravena’s Gilas Pilipinas journey began long before he became a fixture in the senior national team. He first represented the country at the youth level in 2009 with the Philippine men’s national Under-17 basketball team, beginning a long association with international basketball that would see him compete in major tournaments across different age groups and formats.

Over the years, Ravena became one of the most recognizable figures in Philippine basketball, known for his leadership, competitiveness, and ability to perform in high-pressure situations. He eventually made the transition to the senior national team, becoming a key contributor in Gilas Pilipinas’ campaigns in international competitions.

His final appearance for the national team came during the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which was hosted by the Philippines. Ravena played five games in the tournament, averaging 2.6 points and 1.8 assists per game as part of the Gilas squad that competed against some of the world’s top basketball nations.

However, following the transition from former head coach Chot Reyes to current mentor Tim Cone, Ravena found himself outside the national team rotation. Despite calls from some supporters for his return due to his experience and familiarity with international basketball, the veteran guard acknowledged that the program had moved in a different direction.

Ravena accepted the decision and expressed his understanding that the national team is focused on developing a new generation of players who can carry Philippine basketball forward.

“A lot of people said na hindi pa kailangan, pero nag-retire na nga. That’s the direction that they are going, so for me, there’s no problem with that,” he added.

Although he has made his decision public, Ravena clarified that he has not formally communicated his retirement from Gilas Pilipinas to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP). For the veteran guard, his decision was personal and did not require an official announcement beyond sharing his intentions.

“I don’t think I have to do that. I don’t think I have to tell anybody at this point of my career, where I am,” Ravena continued.

While his national team career has ended, Ravena’s professional basketball journey continues. The former NLEX Road Warriors standout recently signed with the Ryukyu Golden Kings in the Japan B. League, opening a new chapter as he focuses on extending his club career overseas.

Ravena said he remains fully supportive of Gilas Pilipinas and believes the country’s future remains bright with the emergence of younger players who will take on the responsibility of representing the Philippines on the international stage.

“I’m very happy that I was able to have that opportunity. I’m just in full support for the national team and the next generation of athletes who will represent the Philippines. It’s not that I wasn’t able to represent the country in my career. I have done it in the past. Walang kulang, no regrets, and just full of love. Pro career, and pro family,” he concluded.

During his time with Gilas Pilipinas, Ravena collected numerous achievements and became one of the country’s most decorated national team players. He was part of five Southeast Asian Games gold medal-winning campaigns from 2011 to 2019, helping the Philippines maintain its dominance in regional basketball.

Beyond his medal haul, Ravena’s impact on the national program extended beyond statistics. He served as a veteran presence in the locker room, offering leadership to younger teammates while representing the competitive spirit associated with Philippine basketball.

As he moves forward with his professional career in Japan, Ravena leaves Gilas Pilipinas with a legacy built on commitment, consistency, and pride in representing the country. Though his national team chapter has ended, his influence on Philippine basketball is expected to continue as he enters the next phase of his career.

  • Jas Mathur confirms Manny Pacquiao will fight before year-end after Mayweather rematch delay

Jas Mathur confirms Manny Pacquiao will fight before year-end after Mayweather rematch delay

Boxing fans were left disappointed after the highly anticipated rematch between legends Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., dubbed the potential “Battle of the Century” sequel, was postponed. While no official reason was provided for the delay, Pacquiao’s team has already shifted its focus toward securing another bout for the Filipino boxing icon before the end of the year.

MP Promotions Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jas Mathur revealed on Monday, July 13, that Pacquiao remains on track to return to the ring in the fourth quarter of 2026, with an exhibition fight currently being explored as a possible option while discussions continue with potential opponents.

Speaking during a press conference at the Wilcon IT Hub in Makati City, Mathur said Pacquiao’s camp is actively working on several possible matchups but emphasized that no opponent has been finalized.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

“We are focused more on what’s in front of us now. We are working on a few different fights right now for him. Presently there’s likely going to be an exhibition that we are trying to put together in the fourth quarter of this year. Nobody is set, no opponent is set in stone yet. We are still working on that,” Mathur said.

The announcement comes after plans for Pacquiao and Mayweather to meet again in September were put on hold. According to Mathur, both camps are now targeting a possible January date for the long-awaited rematch, although several contractual matters still need to be resolved before the fight can move forward.

“The Floyd fight that everybody wants to know about, that fight is being postponed. Right now, the new tentative date that we have is going to be January. But there’s still other technicalities that need to be addressed before, based on other contractual obligations that Floyd has. So those need to be met in order for this to happen. It was a little bit of a mess that whole situation,” he added.

The delay has created uncertainty around what could have been one of boxing’s biggest attractions in recent years. Pacquiao and Mayweather first met in 2015 in a record-breaking showdown that generated enormous global attention, with Mayweather winning by unanimous decision. A rematch between the two all-time greats has remained a major talking point among boxing fans despite both fighters being well past their competitive primes.

Amid speculation surrounding the rematch, Mathur also addressed questions regarding the nature of a possible Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, insisting that the bout would be a legitimate professional contest and not merely an exhibition.

“It’s going to be a real fight. It’s not going to be an exhibition. That whole statement that happened, it was never an exhibition, contrary to the claims of Mayweather Jr. It’s going to be a real fight. It’s not going to be an exhibition. That whole statement that happened, it was never an exhibition, the contract was never an exhibition, it was never signed as an exhibition,” Mathur continued.

While negotiations with Mayweather remain ongoing, Pacquiao’s camp has also explored other high-profile options, including potential matchups against current champions and rising stars in the welterweight division.

Among the names being considered are World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Rolly Romero and popular boxer Ryan Garcia. However, scheduling remains a challenge, as both fighters are expected to compete in August and September, which could affect the timing of a potential Pacquiao bout.

Mathur expressed confidence that both fighters remain realistic possibilities and revealed his personal interest in making a Pacquiao-Romero showdown happen.

“He’s a good buddy of mine. I actually want to put the Rolly fight together, that was my plan from the beginning. I was even talking about it last year because I’m already with Manny, and Rolly is also with me, my company which is Limitless. Rolly is also a dear good friend. So that’s a very direct situation.

“Ryan will fight Manny. Manny will fight Ryan. Rolly will fight Manny. Manny will fight Rolly. All of these people are on the table. It’s not an issue,” he concluded.

At 47 years old, Pacquiao continues to attract significant interest from the boxing world. Although his last professional fight came in 2021 against Yordenis Ugás, the eight-division world champion has remained active through training and exhibition events as he considers another return to the sport.

With multiple possibilities being discussed, Pacquiao’s next opponent remains uncertain, but his team insists that the Filipino icon will be back in action soon as he looks to add another memorable chapter to his legendary career.

  • PAGCOR chief throws support behind Patrick Gregorio’s Sports University vision

PAGCOR chief throws support behind Patrick Gregorio’s Sports University vision

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Patrick Gregorio has unveiled an ambitious proposal that could reshape the future of sports development in the country, calling for the establishment of the Philippines’ first-ever Sports University under the University of the Philippines (UP) System.

Gregorio introduced the vision during his commencement address to the graduating class of the UP College of Human Kinetics at the Varsity Training Center, where he urged one of the country’s most respected academic institutions to spearhead a transformative initiative that would elevate sports beyond competition and position it as a key driver of education, research, innovation, economic development, and nation-building.

The proposal reflects Gregorio’s broader vision of creating a comprehensive institution dedicated to the advancement of sports in the Philippines. Rather than focusing solely on athlete development, the Sports University would serve as a center of excellence for sports science, coaching, physical education, sports medicine, nutrition, sports psychology, sports management, biomechanics, and high-performance research. It would also provide aspiring athletes with opportunities to pursue higher education while continuing to compete at the highest level.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Addressing the graduating students, Gregorio challenged the UP community to embrace a pioneering role in shaping the future of Philippine sports, emphasizing that sustained international success requires more than talent alone. He stressed the need to develop a complete ecosystem that nurtures athletes while also producing the coaches, trainers, researchers, administrators, and sports professionals who play equally vital roles behind the scenes.

The proposal has already received strong support from Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) Chairman Alejandro “Al” Tengco, whose agency remains one of the PSC’s largest funding partners through its legally mandated contribution to Philippine sports.

Speaking during a recent event, Tengco endorsed the concept and expressed his willingness to work closely with the PSC to help turn the vision into reality.

“It’s about time that our country creates a Sports University. Chairman Pato and I discussed how we can help each other beyond Pagcor’s monthly support to the PSC. I fully support the idea of building a sports university,” Tengco said.

PAGCOR plays a crucial role in the country’s sports development program through its court-mandated five percent share of gross gaming revenues allocated to the PSC. The contribution amounts to nearly P400 million every month, translating to approximately P5 billion annually, making it the backbone of funding for national athletes, grassroots initiatives, training programs, and international competitions.

According to Tengco, the increased financial support has helped fuel the country’s recent rise on the international sporting stage, where Filipino athletes have continued to deliver strong performances across multiple disciplines.

However, he emphasized that funding alone does not guarantee success, pointing instead to the leadership and governance within the PSC as equally important factors behind the country’s sporting progress.

“If you noticed, there are many Filipino athletes who have been winning lately. One reason is the funding from Pagcor – that’s our support to Philippine sports. But more than that, it’s the vision and governance of PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio. No matter how big the budget is, if you cannot allocate it well, use it efficiently, and it doesn’t reach the athletes the right way, there’s no use,” he added.

Gregorio’s proposal arrives at a significant moment for Philippine sports. In recent years, the country has celebrated unprecedented achievements on the global stage, highlighted by Olympic, world championship, and continental successes across sports such as boxing, weightlifting, gymnastics, athletics, billiards, and esports. These accomplishments have underscored the growing potential of Filipino athletes while also exposing the need for stronger institutional support to sustain long-term excellence.

A dedicated Sports University could address many of those needs by integrating elite athletic training with academic education and scientific research under one institution. Similar models have proven successful in countries with established high-performance sports systems, where universities serve as hubs for innovation, talent identification, athlete development, and coaching education.

Beyond producing future champions, the proposed institution would also help professionalize careers in sports by developing experts in sports medicine, rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, performance analytics, event management, sports governance, and sports technology. Such a multidisciplinary approach could strengthen every level of the Philippine sporting ecosystem while creating new career opportunities for Filipinos interested in the industry.

Although the proposal remains in its conceptual stage and would require extensive collaboration among the UP System, the national government, Congress, and key stakeholders, it has already sparked discussions about the future direction of Philippine sports development.

For Gregorio, the vision extends far beyond medals and championships. His proposal seeks to build a lasting institution that can produce not only world-class athletes but also the educators, scientists, coaches, administrators, and innovators who will shape the country’s sporting landscape for generations to come.

If realized, the establishment of a Sports University under the UP System could become one of the most significant milestones in Philippine sports history, providing a sustainable foundation for excellence while reinforcing sports as a powerful instrument for education, national pride, and inclusive development.

  • Ja Morant eager to prove himself after joining Portland Trail Blazers

Ja Morant eager to prove himself after joining Portland Trail Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers have made one of the boldest moves of the NBA offseason, acquiring star point guard Ja Morant from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for veteran forward Jerami Grant and young forward Kris Murray. The blockbuster trade signals Portland’s intent to accelerate its rebuilding process by bringing in one of the league’s most dynamic playmakers, despite the questions that have surrounded Morant in recent years.

When healthy, Morant remains among the NBA’s most electrifying guards. His explosive athleticism, elite playmaking ability, and knack for taking over games instantly elevate the Trail Blazers’ backcourt. Capable of attacking the rim with relentless aggression while creating opportunities for teammates, the 26-year-old gives Portland a legitimate franchise centerpiece as the organization looks to return to playoff contention in the highly competitive Western Conference.

While Morant’s talent has never been in doubt, his career has been marked by significant challenges away from the court. The former All-Star became one of the league’s most controversial figures following two separate suspensions by the NBA in 2023 for brandishing a firearm on social media. Those incidents dominated headlines and, for many, overshadowed his accomplishments as one of basketball’s brightest young stars.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Now presented with a fresh start in Portland, Morant believes the narrative surrounding him no longer reflects the person he has become. Speaking during a media session after joining the Trail Blazers, the point guard expressed his frustration that his past continues to define public perception despite years without further incidents.

“I have done what I have done in the past, but it has been addressed and handled already. I don’t see why years later that’s still the topic when nothing has happened since. If I was ‘that guy,’ you all wouldn’t be talking to me now. I wouldn’t be here,” Morant said.

For both Morant and the Trail Blazers, the move represents more than just a basketball transaction. It is an opportunity for one of the league’s most gifted players to rebuild his reputation while helping lead a franchise eager to establish a new identity. Portland is betting that Morant’s maturity and renewed focus will allow his performances on the court to once again become the defining storyline of his career.

The past season was another frustrating chapter for the former Grizzlies star, as injuries severely limited his availability. Morant battled a series of physical setbacks throughout the 2025-26 campaign, including calf, elbow, and ankle injuries that restricted him to just 20 appearances. His interrupted season was further complicated by an off-court disciplinary issue when the Grizzlies suspended him for one game last November following a confrontation with head coach Tuomas Iisalo.

Despite the difficult campaign, Morant insists he has fully recovered physically and is eager to remind fans across the league of the player who emerged as one of the NBA’s premier young guards earlier in his career.

“My body feels great. I get to show the fans in Portland a different Ja. It’s like starting all over again. Over the years I have grown a lot and learned a lot. I go into things differently now. I feel more mature, and I’m ready to work,” he added.

Those comments will undoubtedly encourage Trail Blazers supporters, who hope Morant can remain healthy over a full season and provide the leadership needed to guide Portland’s young core. If he can recapture the form that made him one of the league’s most feared offensive threats, the Trail Blazers could emerge as one of the Western Conference’s most intriguing teams.

Morant entered the NBA as the second overall selection in the 2019 NBA Draft after a standout collegiate career at Murray State. He quickly established himself as the face of the Memphis Grizzlies franchise, spending the first seven seasons of his professional career with the organization while developing into one of the league’s premier point guards.

Across his tenure in Memphis, Morant averaged 22.4 points, 7.4 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game, combining spectacular scoring ability with elite court vision. Under his leadership, the Grizzlies reached the NBA playoffs on four occasions, transforming from a rebuilding franchise into a consistent postseason contender.

His individual résumé is equally impressive. Morant captured the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 2020 after an outstanding debut season before earning the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award in 2022. He has also been selected as an NBA All-Star twice, highlighting the immense talent that has made him one of the league’s most recognizable players.

The trade to Portland now marks the beginning of a new chapter in Morant’s career. For the Trail Blazers, it is a calculated gamble on a player whose ceiling remains among the highest in the league. For Morant himself, it is an opportunity to leave behind the setbacks of recent years, redefine his legacy, and once again let his performances on the court speak louder than the headlines off it.

  • Lionel Messi says facing England in World Cup semifinal will be “special”

Lionel Messi says facing England in World Cup semifinal will be “special”

Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after overcoming a spirited Switzerland side 3-1 after extra time in a dramatic quarterfinal clash at Kansas City Stadium on Sunday, July 12 (Philippine Standard Time).

The Albiceleste were pushed to their limits by a disciplined Swiss outfit before their quality eventually prevailed in the additional 30 minutes. Goals from Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez in extra time sealed the victory, ensuring Lionel Scaloni’s side remained on course to defend the title they won in Qatar four years ago.

The hard-fought triumph sets up one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament—a semifinal showdown against longtime rivals England, renewing one of international football’s most storied rivalries on the sport’s biggest stage.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Following the victory, Argentina captain Lionel Messi admitted the prospect of facing England in a World Cup semifinal holds special significance, both because of the history shared by the two nations and because it will be the first time in his illustrious international career that he has faced the Three Lions.

Despite competing in five previous World Cups and numerous international tournaments, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has remarkably never come up against England in an official match. That changes on Thursday when Argentina and England meet with a place in the World Cup final at stake.

Speaking after the quarterfinal victory, Messi acknowledged the rich history surrounding the fixture while insisting that his generation remains focused solely on the challenge ahead.

“Everything I have seen and remember about Argentina vs. England from 1986 is from videos and images that Argentinians constantly watch and relive. But I think this group is used to playing football matches regardless of the opponent,” Messi said.

Although Messi was not yet born when Argentina defeated England in the iconic quarterfinal at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, the match remains one of football’s most famous encounters.

That contest saw the late Diego Maradona score two of the most memorable goals in football history. His controversial “Hand of God” goal was followed just minutes later by the breathtaking solo effort later dubbed the “Goal of the Century,” a performance that has become part of Argentine football folklore while continuing to haunt England supporters nearly four decades later.

The rivalry was reignited at the 1998 World Cup in France when England captain David Beckham was sent off following an altercation with Diego Simeone, with Argentina eventually advancing on penalties.

Those historic moments have ensured that every meeting between the two nations carries added emotion and significance beyond the football itself.

Messi, however, believes the current Argentine squad is focused on writing its own chapter rather than dwelling on the past. While acknowledging England’s quality, the 39-year-old knows his team must produce another elite performance if they are to keep their hopes of consecutive World Cup titles alive.

“Obviously, playing against England is special because they are a powerhouse, and matches against powerhouses are always special. Personally, it’s the first time I’m going to play against them. I have played everyone except England, so it will be nice for that reason. And we will experience it for what it is: a World Cup semifinal against a powerhouse, a great team, and we will try to arrive in the best possible shape to compete again,” he added.

Argentina’s quarterfinal victory was far from straightforward. Switzerland frustrated the defending champions for long periods, forcing extra time with an organized defensive display and disciplined tactical approach.

However, Argentina’s superior attacking depth ultimately proved decisive. Álvarez broke the deadlock in extra time before Martínez added another to put the match beyond doubt, sending the South American giants into their third consecutive World Cup semifinal.

Álvarez, who once again delivered on the biggest stage, praised his teammates for maintaining their composure under pressure and quickly shifted his focus toward the challenge posed by England.

“We are proud to be among the top four teams in the world. England, we know, has impressive players. They are a great team that’s been doing things well this World Cup but we need to recuperate and prepare our game,” Alvarez continued.

England, meanwhile, have impressed throughout the tournament with a balanced squad featuring a blend of experienced stars and emerging talents. Their run to the semifinals has reinforced their status as one of the favorites to lift the trophy, setting the stage for a heavyweight encounter between two footballing superpowers.

With a place in the World Cup final on the line, Thursday’s clash promises to be another memorable chapter in one of international football’s greatest rivalries.

For Argentina, it represents an opportunity to move one step closer to successfully defending their world title. For Messi, it offers the chance to finally face England in a World Cup—a missing piece in an already legendary international career.

The blockbuster semifinal between Argentina and England is scheduled for Thursday, July 16 (Philippine Standard Time), at Atlanta Stadium, with the winner advancing to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

  • Joshua Pacio retains ONE Strawweight title with submission win over Mansur Malachiev

Joshua Pacio retains ONE Strawweight title with submission win over Mansur Malachiev

Joshua Pacio once again proved why he remains the king of ONE Championship’s strawweight division, producing a commanding performance to successfully defend his ONE Strawweight MMA World Championship with a first-round submission victory over Russia’s Mansur Malachiev at ONE Friday Fights 121: Inner Circle 21 at the historic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on Thursday, July 10.

In one of the most highly anticipated strawweight bouts of the year, Pacio showcased his evolution as a complete mixed martial artist, neutralizing the dangerous wrestling of the previously once-beaten Russian before finishing the contest with a perfectly executed rear-naked choke.

The emphatic victory further strengthened Pacio’s legacy as one of the greatest Filipino mixed martial artists of his generation and reaffirmed his status as the undisputed ruler of the ONE Championship strawweight division.

The bout carried significant importance for the reigning champion, who entered the contest determined to bounce back from one of the toughest moments of his career. Just eight months earlier, Pacio suffered the first knockout defeat of his professional career when Japan’s Yuya Wakamatsu stopped him at ONE 173: Superbon vs. Noiri on November 16 at Ariake Arena in Tokyo.

Rather than allowing that setback to define him, Pacio used it as motivation to improve every aspect of his game. Against Malachiev, the Team Lakay standout displayed the composure, confidence, and championship mentality that have defined his career.

The challenger attempted to impose his game plan from the opening bell, pressing forward aggressively and looking to utilize his trademark wrestling to dictate the pace of the fight. However, Pacio was well prepared for every scenario.

The Filipino champion expertly defended Malachiev’s takedown attempts while mixing together crisp striking, intelligent movement, and timely grappling transitions. As the opening round progressed, Pacio capitalized on a scramble on the ground, quickly taking his opponent’s back before locking in a tight rear-naked choke.

    Malachiev had no answer.

Unable to escape the submission, the Russian eventually lost consciousness, prompting the referee to wave off the contest at the 4:23 mark of the opening round and hand Pacio another successful title defense.

Following the victory, Pacio credited his coaching staff for developing a comprehensive game plan that allowed him to seamlessly blend striking and grappling against one of the division’s most accomplished wrestlers.

“We prepared hard for this. My striking coach and my grappling coach mixed everything together because this is mixed martial arts. We knew he would go to his bread and butter, and that is the takedown,” Pacio said after the fight.

The victory marked Pacio’s second successful defense during his third reign as ONE Strawweight World Champion, further cementing his place among the promotion’s most accomplished champions. His dominant performance also earned him a US$50,000 Performance Bonus, recognizing one of the night’s most impressive finishes.

With the win, Pacio improved his professional mixed martial arts record to 24-5 while recording the 10th submission victory of his career, highlighting the continued evolution of his grappling game.

For Malachiev, the defeat dropped his record to 14-2, with both losses coming against the Filipino champion. Despite entering the contest with an outstanding résumé and a reputation as one of the division’s elite grapplers, the Russian was once again unable to solve the puzzle presented by Pacio.

Reflecting on his latest triumph, Pacio acknowledged the adversity he has overcome throughout his career and emphasized the perseverance that has enabled him to remain at the top of the division.

“Man, I nearly got submitted by a rear-naked choke. It’s all about perseverance. I came back and got the rear-noked choke to win. That’s why I’m here. It’s never easy. I’m at the top of the food chain. I’m the champion. Whoever ONE Championship gives me, I will face them. But I’m studying the top five in this division every day. I’m looking at their strengths and weaknesses, so I’m ready,” he added.

Pacio’s comments reflected the mindset that has made him one of the most respected champions in ONE Championship. Rather than focusing on a specific opponent, the 30-year-old made it clear that he remains committed to constant improvement and is prepared to face any challenger the promotion puts in front of him.

As the strawweight division continues to evolve, Pacio remains the man every contender is chasing. His latest victory demonstrated not only his elite submission skills but also his ability to adapt against different styles, whether striking, wrestling, or grappling.

With another title defense now secured and momentum firmly back on his side, Pacio has once again reminded the mixed martial arts world why he continues to sit atop ONE Championship’s strawweight division. Regardless of who emerges as the next challenger, the Filipino champion has sent a clear message: the road to the ONE Strawweight World Championship still runs through Joshua Pacio.

  • Erika Deloria welcomes challenge of becoming Galeries Tower’s offensive leader after shining in debut

Erika Deloria welcomes challenge of becoming Galeries Tower’s offensive leader after shining in debut

The Galeries Tower Highrisers opened their 2026 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour preseason conference campaign on a high note after overcoming the Farm Fresh Foxies in a thrilling five-set battle, 25-17, 24-26, 25-19, 26-24, on Saturday, July 11, at the Batangas City Sports Coliseum in Batangas City.

The victory gave Galeries an ideal start to their preseason preparations as the team looks to build momentum following a historic breakthrough in the previous All-Filipino Conference. The Highrisers displayed composure in crucial moments, holding off Farm Fresh’s fightback and securing a hard-earned win against one of the league’s rising contenders.

New acquisition Erika Deloria immediately made her presence felt in her first appearance for Galeries, delivering a standout performance that highlighted why the Highrisers were eager to add her to their roster. The versatile outside hitter led all scorers with 24 points while also contributing 13 excellent receptions and 10 digs, providing a significant impact on both offense and defense.

Deloria’s all-around effort proved vital as Galeries relied on her consistency throughout the match, particularly in the deciding moments when Farm Fresh threatened to force another set. Her ability to produce points while remaining effective in the back row gave the Highrisers the balance they needed to secure the victory.

After her impressive debut, Deloria embraced the responsibility of becoming one of Galeries Tower’s primary offensive options, viewing the increased expectations as both a challenge and an opportunity to grow as a player.

“I treated it as both a challenge and an opportunity – for myself and for the team. More than anything, I was thinking about the team because I want us to win together. Whatever I can do to help, no matter how hard the training is, I will do it for the team,” Deloria said.

The 25-year-old joined Galeries following the disbandment of the Chery Tiggo Crossovers, where she was selected as the 20th overall pick in the 2025 PVL Draft. After becoming available in free agency, Deloria found a new home with the Highrisers and immediately showed that she could be a valuable piece for a team aiming to continue its upward trajectory.

For Deloria, earning a victory against Farm Fresh made her first game with Galeries even more meaningful, especially considering the Foxies’ status as one of the league’s competitive teams and the Highrisers’ desire to prove that their previous success was not a one-time achievement.

“It’s really heartwarming because, as we all know, Farm Fresh is one of the contenders. We felt that all the hard work we put in during the offseason finally paid off. We just played with all our hearts. We had nothing to lose, and we simply showed how much we love volleyball,” she added.

Galeries Tower head coach Aying Esteban also praised the team’s improved mindset and work ethic during training, highlighting the commitment shown by his players as they prepare for another challenging PVL campaign.

Following the team’s semifinal appearance in the last All-Filipino Conference, Esteban believes the Highrisers have developed greater confidence and discipline, which were evident in their opening preseason match.

“The biggest change has been their mentality, especially in training. I’m happy because they never get tired of the work we are asking them to do. I’m really grateful for their commitment and the effort they are putting in for the team,” Esteban stated.

The preseason tournament serves as an important opportunity for teams to evaluate their progress, build chemistry, and integrate new additions ahead of the upcoming PVL season. For Galeries Tower, the emergence of Deloria as a key offensive weapon adds another dimension to a squad that has already shown it can compete with the league’s top teams.

With their confidence boosted by a strong opening performance, the Highrisers will look to continue their positive start when Deloria, Esteban, and the rest of the squad return to action against the Nxled Chameleons on Saturday, August 1, in Polomolok, South Cotabato.

Galeries Tower hopes their opening-day victory can serve as the foundation for another successful campaign as they continue their push to establish themselves among the PVL’s elite teams.

  • PHILTA seeks to create stronger tennis ecosystem in Philippines inspired by Alex Eala’s success

PHILTA seeks to create stronger tennis ecosystem in Philippines inspired by Alex Eala’s success

Alex Eala’s remarkable rise on the international stage has not only established her as the greatest young tennis player to emerge from Southeast Asia in recent years but has also sparked a tennis boom in the Philippines, according to the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA).

Fresh off another historic campaign at Wimbledon, Eala continues to elevate Philippine tennis to unprecedented heights. Her growing list of accomplishments has earned worldwide recognition and inspired countless young Filipinos to pick up a racket, raising hopes for a brighter future for the sport in a country traditionally dominated by basketball and boxing.

PHILTA Secretary General John Rey Tiangco believes Eala’s success extends far beyond her achievements on the court, describing the 20-year-old as a transformative figure whose influence is helping reshape the landscape of Philippine tennis.

“Siyempre natutuwa tayo. Kasi yung role natin, kailangan natin i-promote yung sport. Dahil nandiyan na siya Alex, ‘di lang siya ambassador ng tennis, ambassador siya ng Pilipinas. So ngayon, dahil sa kanya, mas maraming gustong humawak na raketa, magtry, maglalaro,” Tiangco said during a media interaction.

According to Tiangco, Eala has become proof that Filipino athletes can compete against the world’s best, giving aspiring players the confidence to dream bigger while also attracting greater public interest, sponsorship opportunities, and investment in the sport.

“Yung mga naglalaro na, ngayon alam nila na kaya ng Pilipina na makarating dun sa world stage. At siyempre, mas maraming nanonood ngayon, mas maraming nakaka-notice sa tennis, mas maraming sponsors at mas maraming yung tulong na makukuha para mas lalong makapag-develop ng kabataan,” he added.

While acknowledging Eala’s impact, Tiangco emphasized that PHILTA’s responsibility now is to capitalize on the momentum by creating a stronger development pathway for young athletes across the country.

He stressed that producing another player of Eala’s caliber will require significant investment in grassroots programs, better infrastructure, and continued education for coaches.

“We have to open opportunities for everyone. ‘Di naman ibig sabihin na merong ganito, automatic na yun. Kailangan mas dumami yung courts. Maging available siya sa lahat ng lugar. Kailangan may magandang programa. Dahil si Alex naman, ‘di naman siya magiging ganyan kung ‘di siya nakapag-training na magagaling yung coaches niya. So tuloy-tuloy yung ginagawa nating certification ng coaches training natin,” Tiangco continued.

Beyond improving facilities and coaching standards, Tiangco also underscored the importance of exposing young Filipino players to international competition at an early age. He pointed to Eala’s extensive junior career overseas as a key factor behind her rapid development and believes providing similar opportunities to future prospects should be one of PHILTA’s priorities.

“Marami dapat tayong competition. Di lang local si Alex, kaya ganyan yung level niya. Bata pa lang siya nakita niya niya yung competitive level sa international scene. What we are trying to bring in now is more international tournaments. As for the juniors, para they can see the level of competitiveness. So meron na tayong per year, meron tayong four ITFs. Gakaroon tayo ng hopefully yung men’s na M15. Then sana mababa pa natin dito yung ATF. Siyempre yung WTA,” he stated.

The PHILTA official said hosting more International Tennis Federation (ITF), Asian Tennis Federation (ATF), and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) events in the Philippines would give local players valuable opportunities to compete against higher-level opponents without having to travel abroad, accelerating their development while raising the country’s profile on the global tennis calendar.

For Tiangco, however, Eala’s greatest contribution goes beyond trophies, rankings, or milestones. He believes the Filipino star has become an ideal role model whose professionalism, humility, and unwavering pride in representing the Philippines have made her an inspiration to athletes of all ages.

“Sabi ko nga, napakarami natin pwedeng matutunan at parating tayong nai-inspire ni Alex. Sabi nga niya, be the best self. So dapat pagbutuhin natin yung ating sarili. At siyempre, yung pinakamaganda ay parating proud siya sa kanyang bansa. Ying mindset niya Alex, parating growth mindset kasi. So makikita ko, parating nag-iimprove siya tuwing laro niya, tuwing tournament, nag-iimprove siya. Every year, nakita ko yun, di lang sa rankings siya, dun sa laro niya, talagang parating nag-iimprove,” Tiangco concluded.

Eala returned to the Philippines on Sunday, July 12, following her historic Wimbledon campaign, receiving a warm welcome from fans eager to celebrate her latest achievement. She is scheduled to meet supporters during “Home Court: The Alex Eala Fan Meet Experience,” a special event hosted by Globe at Glorietta in Makati City on Wednesday, July 15.

As Eala continues to break new ground on the international stage, PHILTA hopes her success will serve as the catalyst for a new era of Philippine tennis—one in which more young Filipinos are inspired to dream big, compete globally, and follow in the footsteps of the country’s brightest tennis star.

  • NBA Trade Report: Victor Wembanyama signs record five-year, $251M extension with San Antonio Spurs

NBA Trade Report: Victor Wembanyama signs record five-year, $251M extension with San Antonio Spurs

Victor Wembanyama has reaffirmed his long-term commitment to the San Antonio Spurs after agreeing to a massive rookie maximum contract extension, securing the franchise cornerstone for years to come in one of the biggest deals in NBA history.

The Spurs have reached an agreement with the 22-year-old superstar on a five-year, $251 million rookie maximum extension, with the total value of the contract expected to surpass $300 million should Wembanyama achieve the designated performance incentives built into the deal. The agreement marks the richest contract in franchise history and further cements the French phenom as the centerpiece of San Antonio’s championship ambitions.

Despite being eligible to pursue an even larger payday, NBA insider and ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Wembanyama opted for the 25 percent maximum salary instead of the 30 percent supermax. The decision gives the Spurs greater salary cap flexibility as they continue building a roster capable of competing for an NBA title around their generational talent.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Shortly after the agreement became public, Wembanyama delivered a clear message to Spurs fans about his commitment to the organization.

“Spurs family, I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes,” Wembanyama wrote in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The statement quickly resonated throughout the NBA, with many praising the young star’s willingness to prioritize the team’s long-term success over maximizing his own earnings. By accepting a smaller percentage of the salary cap, Wembanyama has provided the Spurs with additional financial flexibility to retain key contributors and pursue elite talent in free agency, a move that reflects both his maturity and desire to compete for championships.

His decision has not gone unnoticed inside the Spurs organization.

Rookie forward Carter Bryant said Wembanyama’s sacrifice was entirely consistent with the personality that teammates have come to know since his arrival in San Antonio.

“I don’t think anybody was surprised on that in terms of the type of person he is. He’s a winner, so whatever he can do to make the team better, that’s what he’s going to do every time,” small forward Carter Bryant stated.

San Antonio Summer League head coach Corliss Williamson echoed those sentiments, emphasizing that Wembanyama’s selfless approach speaks volumes about his upbringing and leadership qualities despite his young age.

“It just says a lot about his character. It says a lot about his family, how he was raised, to be able to sacrifice like that and think about the bigger picture rather than thinking about himself. You don’t meet many like that. And when you do, you got to count that as a blessing, especially when they are on your side,” San Antonio’s Summer League head coach Corliss Williamson added.

The extension represents another major milestone in what has already become one of the most remarkable starts to an NBA career. Since being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Wembanyama has not only lived up to the enormous expectations surrounding him but has arguably exceeded them through his rapid development into one of the league’s premier two-way players.

Standing at 7-foot-4 with an unprecedented combination of size, mobility, ball-handling, and perimeter shooting, Wembanyama has transformed the Spurs on both ends of the floor. His unique skill set has made him nearly impossible to defend offensively while allowing him to dominate defensively as both a rim protector and versatile perimeter defender.

The 2025-26 campaign was arguably his finest season yet. Wembanyama averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, a league-leading 3.1 blocks, and 1.0 steal per game while playing just 29.2 minutes per contest. He also showcased remarkable efficiency, shooting 51.2 percent from the field, 34.9 percent from beyond the arc, and 82.7 percent from the free-throw line.

His production placed him among some of the greatest centers in NBA history. Wembanyama became just the sixth player ever to average at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks over an entire season, joining Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, and Shaquille O’Neal. He also became the first player to accomplish the feat since O’Neal during the 1999-2000 season, further underscoring the historic nature of his campaign.

Those numbers translated into individual accolades as well. Through just three NBA seasons, Wembanyama has already assembled one of the league’s most impressive résumés for a player his age. His accomplishments include winning the 2026 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, capturing the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year honor, leading the league in blocked shots for three consecutive seasons, and earning two NBA All-Star selections.

More importantly for the Spurs, Wembanyama’s extension provides long-term stability as the franchise seeks to return to championship contention. With one of basketball’s brightest young stars now under contract for the foreseeable future, San Antonio can continue building around a player widely regarded as the face of the NBA’s next generation.

For Spurs fans, the message could not have been clearer. Wembanyama is committed to San Antonio, believes in the organization’s vision, and is willing to sacrifice financially in pursuit of sustained success. As the franchise continues its rebuild, securing the signature of its generational superstar may prove to be the most important victory of all.
