    Austria also revealed that Boatwright had been in communication with the team even before the start of the conference, though his prior commitments with the Daegu KOGAS Pegasus in the Korean Basketball League prevented an earlier reunion with San Miguel.

     

    “Benny, we keep on communicating with him. Unfortunately, before itong mga import namin, may commitment siya sa Korea. From Taiwan to Korea, at the time, ongoing pa yung All-Filipino nun eh,” he added.

    According to Austria, concerns over Patton’s status began to surface in the days leading up to the game, with the import reportedly absent from practice for three consecutive sessions. The coach added that Patton had indicated fatigue rather than injury, making his sudden unavailability on game day particularly unexpected.

     

    “Last night I was able to talk to the driver and then he asked him, ano are you ready to play? He was in good spirits last night. That’s why I’m excited for him to come and play. But one hour before the game I heard he cannot play. That’s very unprofessional of him,” Austria said.

     

    “There’s no injuries eh. And I asked him, are you going to practice? He said I just want to rest dahil he’s tired. I said, okay, see you tomorrow. It’s very important practice for us to prepare because the situation right now is not cooperating with our standing. So I’m expecting na he will show up today. But wala eh,” he added.

     

    The veteran coach also stressed that the organization expects accountability moving forward, hinting at possible consequences following Patton’s sudden exit from team activities.

     

    “I don’t know anong magiging consequences niyan. Dahil it’s unprofessional eh, ganyan eh. And then, we are relying on his presence here because we know that we can win because he proved it in his first two games. He helped a lot. Kami naman, tao lang tayo. Pwede naman kami magpatawad. Pero he has to face the consequences na dapat mangyari sa kanya,” Austria concluded.

     

    San Miguel now turns its attention to stabilizing its import situation ahead of a crucial stretch in the elimination round. Boatwright, who previously played a pivotal role in the Beermen’s 2024 Commissioner’s Cup championship run after replacing Ivan Aska, is expected to rejoin the squad once final arrangements are completed.

    “We used the SEA Games and the AFF tournament as opportunities to prepare these girls for this exact moment. Their growth from those tournaments to the Asian Cup, balanced by the influence of our World Cup veterans, has been excellent. With another year of professional development, I can’t wait to see how they perform in Brazil,” he added.

     

    Beyond squad development, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has also expanded its global scouting network, broadening the pool of eligible talent with Filipino heritage. Torcaso stressed that selection is based purely on merit, regardless of where players are developed.

     

    “It doesn’t matter where you’re from – if you’re born in the Philippines or outside – every player will have the opportunity as long as they train hard and are good enough,” Torcaso continued.

     

    Looking ahead, the team is expected to regroup in June following a short break, with a more structured international calendar planned in preparation for the 2027 World Cup. Torcaso noted that the aim is to maximize every FIFA window, exposing the squad to different playing styles from across the globe.

     

    “The plan will be to occupy every single FIFA window. We want to be challenged by different styles – playing South American, European, and Asian teams to ensure we are 100% ready. These girls consistently show they belong on the world stage. We will do something special at home to give them a proper farewell before we head to South America,” he concluded.

    According to team officials, the procedure was successful, but the sudden nature of the situation left the organization scrambling as it unfolded overnight. Head coach Nick Nurse revealed that the team only became aware of Embiid’s condition in the early hours of the morning, disrupting their usual pregame preparations.

     

    “They had said that he had in the middle of the night, like 3, 3:30 a.m. or something, contacted them to say he was not feeling well. And so I think that’s kind of when this particular incident started,” Nurse said in a media interaction.

    Tabal etched her name into the record books when she became the first Filipina marathoner to qualify for the Olympic Games, earning her spot in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Her historic qualification remains a defining moment for Philippine athletics, inspiring a new generation of long-distance runners to pursue the global stage.

     

    Now 36, Tabal has transitioned into public service as the sports development officer for the Mandaue City Sports Office in Mandaue City. In a recent guest appearance on Off the Court, she opened up about her life after competitive racing—one that requires her to juggle administrative duties while staying hands-on as a parent.

    “I’m very grateful that I get to work here in Mandaue. It’s perfect because after the pandemic, I got the opportunity to lead the Mandaue City Sports Office. I really need to give Athena parent time, so I don’t want to be an absent mom. I bring her to the office, and in most of my activities, she’s there. I’m being a mother and working at the same time,” Tabal said.

     

    Her transition from elite athlete to sports administrator has been seamless in many ways, largely because of the perspective she gained during her years representing the country. Tabal emphasized that her firsthand experience allows her to better understand and respond to the needs of athletes under her care.

    “What’s good about being a former athlete leading the office is that I understand what athletes need. I empathize with them. When they ask for support, I explain the limitations but also how we can help them. We make sure to recognize winners and release incentives as fast as possible. Before, I experienced winning without receiving incentives. Now, we focus on proper recognition,” she added.

     

    That empathy is rooted in a decorated career that saw Tabal compete at the highest levels across Southeast Asia and beyond. She represented the Philippines in three editions of the Southeast Asian Games, capturing silver medals in the 2015 Singapore Games and the 2019 Philippine-hosted edition, before reaching the pinnacle with a gold medal performance in the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Games.

     

    Domestically, Tabal dominated the long-distance scene, winning the women’s division of the prestigious National Milo Marathon Finals for six consecutive years from 2013 to 2018—a feat that underscored her consistency and endurance. Her achievements did not go unnoticed, as she was named 2016 Athlete of the Year by the Sportswriters Association of Cebu.

     

    On the international stage, Tabal also tested herself against world-class competition. She represented the Philippines in the 2016 Boston Marathon alongside fellow Filipino runner Rafael Poliquit Jr., finishing 20th—a respectable showing in one of the world’s most prestigious races.

     

    While her competitive days may be behind her, Tabal’s commitment to Philippine sports remains unwavering. Through her work in grassroots development and athlete support in Mandaue, she is helping shape the next generation—ensuring that young talents are given opportunities and recognition that were not always available during her own career.
