More than a scorer: June Mar Fajardo embraces new role in San Miguel’s title push

The San Miguel Beermen have made a strong start to the 2026 PBA Governors’ Cup, positioning themselves as one of the top contenders in Group A with a 5-2 win-loss record.

San Miguel continued its impressive run with a dominant 126-114 victory over the Converge FiberXers at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday, August 5. While the Beermen’s offense once again produced a high-scoring performance, the spotlight belonged to franchise cornerstone June Mar Fajardo, who made his impact felt in an unfamiliar role.

The eight-time PBA Most Valuable Player did not lead San Miguel in scoring against Converge. Instead, Fajardo controlled the game in other areas, delivering a remarkable all-around performance with 21 rebounds and 10 assists, while adding five points and four blocks in nearly 39 minutes of action.

For the 36-year-old superstar, the decision to prioritize playmaking and defense came naturally as import George King and several of his teammates carried much of the scoring responsibility.

With San Miguel already possessing multiple offensive weapons, Fajardo explained that he focused on filling the gaps in other areas and embracing his role as a facilitator and defensive anchor.

“Sobrang dami na naming scorer eh. Yung pinasok ni coach halos lahat scorer yun eh. Yung kulang sa group namin yung role player. So pwede ko i-fill yung gap na yun, yung role na yun,” Fajardo said during the postgame press conference.

“Yung score naman nila, score ko na rin eh. Score yun namin ng team eh. So yun yung ano. Buti nakuha namin yung panalo. Ayoko makipag-kumpetensiya sa scoring,” he added.

San Miguel head coach Leo Austria praised Fajardo’s unselfish approach, highlighting how the veteran center’s willingness to impact the game beyond scoring reflects his value as a complete player.

“You can see naman, June Mar doesn’t want to score but he has a lot of rebounds and assists. Ten assists and 21 rebounds. That’s a sign of a good player. He is not thinking of himself, he is thinking of his teammates,” Austria said.

Despite taking on a different role, Fajardo continues to provide consistent production for the Beermen this conference. He is currently averaging 8.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game in the 2026 Governors’ Cup, proving that his influence extends far beyond putting points on the scoreboard.

As San Miguel continues its push for another championship run, Fajardo’s leadership and versatility remain among the team’s biggest strengths. The Beermen will look to build on their momentum when they face the Macau Giant Pandas on Saturday, August 8, at the Ynares Center in Montalban.

  • PFF supports Gianni Infantino despite backlash to sell FIFA events to private investors

PFF supports Gianni Infantino despite backlash to sell FIFA events to private investors

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has come under intense scrutiny after proposing a major restructuring plan that would have allowed private investors to acquire minority stakes in FIFA’s commercial and event operations, including those tied to the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup.

The proposal, known as the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), was presented to FIFA’s 211 member associations as part of a broader strategy to generate additional revenue for football development worldwide. Under the plan, FIFA would retain majority ownership of the new enterprise while opening a minority stake to external investors.

Infantino argued that the initiative would significantly increase FIFA’s commercial income, enabling the organization to triple the financial support distributed to its member associations. The additional funding, according to FIFA, would be used to strengthen football development programs, improve infrastructure, expand grassroots initiatives, enhance coaching education, and support the overall growth of the sport, particularly in emerging football nations.

Despite those promises, the proposal was met with strong resistance from several of football’s most influential governing bodies.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) led the opposition, raising concerns over the commercialization of FIFA’s flagship competitions and the long-term implications of bringing private investors into the governing body’s business operations.

UEFA reportedly warned that it would consider boycotting future FIFA World Cup tournaments should the proposal move forward, a stance that quickly gained support from other continental confederations.

Opposition to the plan intensified after the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) joined UEFA in rejecting the proposal. Faced with mounting resistance from several of its largest confederations, FIFA ultimately withdrew the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal.

While most football governing bodies welcomed the decision to scrap the initiative, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) took a different position.

In an official statement, the PFF expressed support for the original objectives behind the proposal, emphasizing the importance of increased financial and technical assistance for developing football nations such as the Philippines.

“The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) believes developing football nations need stronger financial and technical support, and we welcome any serious effort to provide it. We respect the views of UEFA, CONCACAF, the AFC, and fellow Member Associations that proposals of significant structural and financial impact—such as FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE)—must be discussed openly and democratically. Broad consultation across all confederations and Member Associations protects transparency and helps everyone reach a shared, well-informed decision,” the federation said.

Although acknowledging that FIFA had withdrawn the proposal, the PFF reiterated its support for Infantino’s broader vision of expanding financial assistance across FIFA’s global membership.

“Although FIFA has withdrawn the FFE proposal, PFF continues to support the goal behind it, championed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino: expanding commercial and financial assistance to all 211 Member Associations, especially smaller markets like the Philippines. We stand behind President Gianni Infantino’s leadership, and trust that continued dialogue among all confederations and Member Associations will keep the global game moving forward together,” the statement added.

The Philippines was among only a handful of national federations to publicly back Infantino’s position. Within Southeast Asia, the Football Association of Indonesia also expressed support for the proposal, highlighting the differing perspectives between developing football nations seeking greater investment and established football powers concerned about the governance and commercialization of the global game.

The debate surrounding the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal has underscored the growing divide within world football over how the sport should be financed and governed. While the proposal has been shelved for now, discussions surrounding increased investment, financial sustainability, and support for developing member associations are expected to remain key issues within FIFA in the years ahead.

  • Filipina Chezka Centeno denies match-fixing claims after falling short of historic World 10-Ball title

Filipina Chezka Centeno denies match-fixing claims after falling short of historic World 10-Ball title

Filipina cue artist Chezka Centeno has cemented her status as one of the world’s premier young pool players, with a decorated career highlighted by multiple world titles and international accolades.

However, her latest campaign at the World Pool Association (WPA) Women’s World 10-Ball Championship ended in heartbreak after she fell short of another historic milestone.

Centeno suffered a 4-1, 4-0, 1-4, 0-4, 4-0 defeat to Margarita Fefilove in the championship match held in Rome, Italy on Thursday, August 6, missing out on the opportunity to claim a record-breaking third world 10-ball title.

The loss also denied the 27-year-old the chance to become the first player—male or female—to win three world 10-ball championships and the first athlete to capture back-to-back titles in the event. Centeno previously ruled the tournament in 2023 in Austria and successfully defended her crown in 2025 in Indonesia.

While the defeat was difficult to accept, Centeno revealed that the most painful part was facing accusations from some fans who alleged that she intentionally lost the match and was involved in match-fixing.

Addressing the controversy, the Zamboanga City native dismissed the claims and emphasized that mistakes are part of any sport, even at the highest level.

“I understand why some people are disappointed with the outcome, but everyone has off matches. I have seen the match-fixing accusations circulating in some Filipino comment sections, and while I know they don’t represent everyone, those claims are simply not true. Miscues and mistakes happen, even at the highest level. That’s the reality of sports,” Centeno wrote in a Facebook post.

Centeno acknowledged that she was unable to deliver her best performance in the final but gave full credit to Fefilove for producing the stronger showing when it mattered most.

“I stepped to the table with one goal: to defend my title. Unfortunately, things didn’t go my way, and my mistakes cost me the match. That’s part of competition, no matter how difficult it is to accept,” Centeno said.

“That said, Margarita played a great match, earned the championship, and deserves every bit of the credit,” she added.

Despite falling short in the final, Centeno remained proud of her overall tournament performance. She earned $33,000 for finishing runner-up after winning six consecutive matches on her way to the championship clash.

“I’m proud of how hard I worked to reach the finals, even though the ending wasn’t what I had hoped for. I’m allowing myself to be proud of that, and I’m also choosing to give myself the same grace I would give any other athlete who gave everything they had,” Centeno concluded.

Centeno’s journey in pool began at just five years old, and by the age of 11, she was already competing in the Philippine National Games. Since then, she has developed into one of the Philippines’ most accomplished cue sports athletes, earning world championship honors and representing the country on the international stage.

Beyond her success in individual competitions, Centeno has also been a key contributor to Philippine sports, winning four gold medals across three editions of the Southeast Asian Games.

Although she missed out on another piece of history in Rome, Centeno’s continued success at the highest level further strengthens her reputation as one of the greatest Filipino pool players of her generation.

  • Nxled coach Ettore Guidetti says Irah Jaboneta is living up to draft expectations

Nxled coach Ettore Guidetti says Irah Jaboneta is living up to draft expectations

The Nxled Chameleons have enjoyed an impressive start to the 2026 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour preseason, winning two of their first three matches to sit second in the standings and build early momentum ahead of the new campaign.

A major factor behind Nxled’s encouraging performances has been the emergence of rookie libero Irah Jaboneta, who has wasted little time proving why the franchise selected her with the fifth overall pick in this year’s PVL Rookie Draft.

The former University of the Philippines standout has provided stability to the Chameleons’ backcourt with her consistent floor defense and reliable reception. Jaboneta recorded nine excellent digs in Nxled’s convincing 25-17, 25-23, 25-18 victory over the Capital1 Solar Spikers in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur on July 25 before following it up with another impressive display against the Galeries Tower Highrisers in Polomolok, South Cotabato on August 1. In that straight-sets win, she finished with 12 excellent receptions and six excellent digs, once again anchoring the team’s defensive effort.

Her performances have not gone unnoticed, with Nxled head coach Ettore Guidetti expressing his satisfaction over the team’s decision to make Jaboneta its first selection in the rookie draft.

“Well, I have to say that she is confirming all my expectations about my first pick in the draft. She’s playing great, she’s absolutely a person fully focused on volleyball. I’m blessed every single day of the choice I made. I love the way she is, not only as a consistent libero but as a person. She’s really into the team, everybody trusts her,” Guidetti said during a media interaction.

For Jaboneta, the seamless transition into professional volleyball has been made possible by the support she has received from her teammates, who have helped her settle into a new environment both on and off the court.

“Makikita naman po kung gaano ako nag-e-enjoy sa court. Ganun din outside the court. Kasi ‘yung energy or ‘yung tiwala nila, nadadala ko po sa loob ng court. Nung una, nahihirapan din po talaga ako sa adjustments ko. Kasi syempre po, kinikilala ko pa po sila inside and outside the court. Parang nahihiya pa ako, naiilang pa ako, pero mas nagiging comfortable na po ako,” Jaboneta said.

Although she has made an immediate impact, the 26-year-old believes she is only beginning to unlock her potential after converting from outside hitter to libero.

She admitted that embracing her new role remains a work in progress, stressing that consistency and fully committing to the responsibilities of a libero are among her biggest priorities moving forward.

“Consistency po talaga and dapat i-own ko po ‘yung role ko. Syempre po converted ako, kailangan wala na ‘yung mindset na papalo, kailangan kung ano ‘yung trabaho, gawin. So marami pa akong kailangang i-trabaho po kasi iba-iba po ‘yung kalaban namin, iba iba ‘yung kakahayaan nila as spikers, as players, so every game po kailangan paghandaan talaga. ‘Yun ‘yung challenge sa’kin as libero,” she explained.

Jaboneta’s rapid development has been an encouraging sign for a Nxled side looking to establish itself as one of the league’s rising contenders. With the rookie continuing to grow in confidence and earning the trust of both her coaching staff and teammates, the Chameleons appear to have found a dependable presence in the back row for years to come.

Nxled will look to continue its strong preseason form when it takes on the Farm Fresh Foxies on August 15 in Lanao del Norte, with Jaboneta expected to once again play a pivotal role in the Chameleons’ defensive setup.

  • NBA Trade Report: Dillon Brooks agrees to three-year, $73 million contract extension with Phoenix Suns

NBA Trade Report: Dillon Brooks agrees to three-year, $73 million contract extension with Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns have secured one of the cornerstones of their new-era roster, agreeing to a three-year, $73 million contract extension with veteran forward Dillon Brooks that will keep him in Phoenix through the 2029-30 NBA season.

The news was first reported by ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, who revealed on X that Brooks and the Suns had reached an agreement on the lucrative extension.

“Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks has agreed to a three-year, $73 million contract extension through 2029-30, Mike George of Klutch Sports tells ESPN. Brooks has become a key part of the Suns’ two-way, hard-nosed culture under Jordan Ott and lands a new guaranteed long-term deal.”

The extension represents another significant step in Phoenix’s efforts to establish a long-term identity following a dramatic roster overhaul over the past year. Brooks has quickly emerged as one of the franchise’s emotional leaders, bringing the defensive intensity, physicality, and competitive edge that the Suns have sought to build around under first-year head coach Jordan Ott.

The timing of the agreement is also notable. Brooks was entering the final season of the four-year, $86 million contract he originally signed before arriving in Phoenix and would have become an unrestricted free agent next summer. By extending him now, the Suns eliminate any uncertainty surrounding one of their most important veterans while reinforcing their commitment to continuity.

At 30 years old, Brooks is coming off arguably the finest season of his nine-year NBA career. He averaged a career-best 20.2 points per game while contributing 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists, showcasing the most complete offensive production of his career without sacrificing the defensive tenacity that has defined his reputation around the league.

Although injuries interrupted portions of his season, Brooks still proved invaluable whenever he was on the floor. He appeared in 56 regular-season games after missing 18 contests with a fractured left hand, but his return provided an immediate lift as Phoenix surged into the postseason.

During the Suns’ playoff campaign, Brooks elevated his game even further. He led the team in scoring with 26.0 points per game while connecting on an outstanding 43.8 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. Despite his stellar individual performances, Phoenix was unable to advance, suffering a first-round sweep at the hands of the eventual Western Conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

Brooks’ journey to Phoenix has been one of steady evolution. He arrived with the Suns on July 26, 2025, as part of one of the most complex trades in recent NBA history—a seven-team blockbuster that sent former Finals MVP Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets while bringing Brooks and rising guard Jalen Green to Arizona. The move marked the beginning of a new chapter for the franchise, with Brooks quickly establishing himself as one of the team’s foundational veterans.

Originally selected by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 45th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, Brooks spent six seasons in Memphis before continuing his career with Houston. Throughout his time in the league, he has earned a reputation as one of basketball’s premier perimeter defenders, routinely drawing assignments against opposing stars while embracing the role of defensive enforcer.

Brooks has also become one of the NBA’s most polarizing personalities. His relentless trash talk, physical style of play, and willingness to challenge the league’s biggest names have made him a frequent lightning rod for criticism. At the same time, those same qualities have earned him widespread respect from teammates, coaches, and many fans, who view him as the type of player capable of changing a team’s mentality and competitive culture.

That influence has already been evident in Phoenix. Beyond the statistics, Brooks has helped instill a tougher, more resilient identity on both ends of the floor, emerging as one of the emotional engines behind the Suns’ resurgence. His leadership, defensive versatility, and improved offensive consistency have made him indispensable to the organization’s long-term plans.

By locking Brooks into a new deal before the start of the season, Phoenix sends a clear message about the direction of the franchise. The Suns are not only investing in one of their most productive players but also in the culture they believe can return them to championship contention. With Brooks now secured through the end of the decade, the organization has reaffirmed its belief that his intensity, leadership, and two-way impact will remain central to its pursuit of an NBA title.

“Everyone in tennis should be cheering for her”: Andy Roddick praises Alex Eala’s global impact

Alex Eala continues to make waves in the international tennis scene, with her rapid rise drawing praise from some of the biggest names in the sport.

The Filipina tennis sensation has further strengthened her reputation as one of the brightest young talents in the world after achieving another historic milestone that has placed Philippine tennis firmly in the global spotlight.

At just 21 years old, Eala has built a remarkable career highlighted by determination, consistency, and a series of breakthrough achievements. From her dominant junior campaign to her emergence as a rising force on the WTA Tour, the young star has continued to prove that Filipino athletes can compete at the highest level of international tennis.

Eala recently added the biggest achievement of her professional career after defeating World No. 3 and top seed at the Mubadala DC Open to claim the WTA 500 title. The championship marked her first-ever WTA 500 crown and made her the first Filipino player in history to break into the Top 20 of the WTA singles rankings.

Beyond her performances on the court, Eala has also become one of the most recognizable figures on the WTA Tour. Her matches have attracted strong support from Filipino fans around the world, with many traveling internationally to cheer for the young star as she continues her historic journey.

Her growing influence has even caught the attention of tennis legend Andy Roddick, who highlighted Eala’s impact on the sport during a recent episode of his Served Podcast.

Roddick praised the energy and support surrounding Eala, emphasizing that her success could help introduce tennis to a wider global audience.

“Everyone in tennis should be cheering for her, right? You can say, like, don’t pick favorites, don’t cheer for her, but I’m cheering for markets. If we could bring hundreds of millions of people because she is playing, well then, I’m going to cheer for that because it’s better for tennis,” Roddick said.

The former world No. 1 and 2003 US Open champion added that an Eala Grand Slam triumph would have a significant impact on the growth of tennis, particularly by bringing more fans into the sport.

“I know some people might be like, ‘She doesn’t want a Slam.’ But she’s literally carrying hundreds of millions of fans to our sport and saying, you’re die-hards now. This is great for the sport,” Roddick added.

Roddick clarified that his support is not about favoring one player over another but recognizing the unique influence Eala could have on tennis globally.

“It doesn’t mean you like her more. I love Jessica Pegula. All I’m saying is that I want to see Alex Eala do well consistently because of what impact she will have on the game. Not all impacts are the same with players. With players, you know, Alex Eala winning a Slam is more than someone else winning a Slam,” he concluded.

Eala has wasted little time building on her Washington triumph. Just days after capturing the biggest title of her career, the Filipina star returned to action at the 2026 Canadian Open, where she defeated Alycia Parks, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, to advance to the Round of 32.

She will next face American Caty McNally in the Round of 32, scheduled for Saturday, August 8, as she continues her pursuit of more milestones on the WTA Tour.

With her historic achievements, growing international following, and continued improvement against the world’s best players, Eala is quickly becoming not only a symbol of Philippine tennis but also one of the sport’s most exciting young stars.

  • PSC backs Ormoc’s bid to host major sporting events

PSC backs Ormoc’s bid to host major sporting events

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is intensifying its efforts to decentralize sports development across the country, with Ormoc City emerging as one of its key destinations for future national and international sporting competitions.

Backed by significant investments in world-class sports infrastructure, Ormoc is positioning itself as a rising sports hub in Eastern Visayas. The city’s rapid transformation has caught the attention of the PSC, which is now exploring opportunities to bring major sporting events to the area, including the prestigious 2027 Batang Pinoy National Championships.

PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio confirmed the commission’s interest during the Eastern Visayas Sports and Youth Summit, citing Ormoc’s expanding sports facilities and its commitment to athlete development as key factors in its growing appeal as a host city.

“We have many sports events lined up, and we hope to bring one to Ormoc in the future,” Gregorio said.

“For Batang Pinoy, we will provide funding to ensure successful hosting. You will notice that 80 percent of our best athletes in our national teams are from the provinces. Our goal is to bring opportunities to them instead of requiring athletes to train in Manila.”

Gregorio’s remarks underscore the PSC’s broader vision of strengthening grassroots sports by making high-level competitions and training opportunities more accessible to athletes outside the National Capital Region. Rather than concentrating resources in Metro Manila, the commission aims to empower provincial athletes by developing regional centers capable of hosting elite competitions.

That vision aligns closely with Ormoc City’s long-term sports development strategy.

The Eastern Visayas Sports and Youth Summit, currently being held in the city, serves as a platform to showcase Ormoc’s growing capabilities while encouraging collaboration among local government units, sports officials, coaches, and youth leaders. The summit also highlights the city’s ambition to become the premier sporting destination in Eastern Visayas.

Representative Richard Gomez emphasized that sustained investment in sports infrastructure is central to achieving that goal.

“We want Ormoc to be the sports epicenter of the region through proper infrastructure,” Gomez said.

“We hope that through this development, we will be able to strengthen the region’s sports program over the next five or six years. We are here to share everything because we want other towns to step up. We are not sending out athletes without proper training and support.”

Among the flagship projects is a PHP100-million track-and-field facility inside the new Ormoc City Sports Complex, which is expected to be completed by late next year. Once operational, the venue is expected to meet the standards required to host major national competitions while also serving as a high-performance training center for athletes from Eastern Visayas and neighboring regions.

The track-and-field facility forms part of a much larger sports infrastructure program that has transformed the city over the past several years.

Since 2022, the national and local governments have invested approximately PHP2 billion in the development of the Ormoc City Sports Complex. The sprawling complex now features a badminton center, padel courts, a skateboard park, and a convention center, creating a multi-sport destination capable of accommodating athletes across various disciplines.

The investments reflect a growing recognition that quality facilities are essential to developing future champions while also attracting sporting events that can generate tourism, economic activity, and community engagement.

Ormoc Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez also reaffirmed the city’s commitment to pursuing its ambitious vision, emphasizing that progress begins with taking decisive action rather than waiting for perfect conditions.

“There is no perfect time. We only have now,” the mayor said.

“If the dream is so big, you will always think you have to get everything right first before you begin.”

With continued support from the PSC, national government agencies, and local stakeholders, Ormoc appears well on its way to becoming one of the country’s leading sports destinations. Should the city secure the hosting rights for the 2027 Batang Pinoy National Championships, it would represent another significant milestone in its transformation into a regional center for sports excellence and grassroots athlete development.

Headlining the Philippine contingent is Albert Delos Santos of Zamboanga City, who enters the competition riding a wave of confidence after a historic campaign at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Junior Championships in Ismailia, Egypt, in May. Now 19 years old, Tarro believes the upcoming tournament presents the perfect opportunity to break through.

“Gusto ko kasi manalo talaga this year kasi gusto ko bumawi. Last year kasi 7th place lang ako sa category ko, then now gusto ko magka-medal talaga. Medyo kinakabahan ako sa training pero pursigido ako kasi last year ko na din ito para sa Junior Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships,” Tarro said during a media interaction.

Unlike previous campaigns, Tarro feels far more prepared heading into this year’s continental meet. He credited coaches Diwa Delos Santos and Julius Naranjo, as well as Olympic champion Hidilyn Diaz, for helping him maximize his potential through improved training and technical refinement.

“This time kasi nung nag-compete ako wala din ako sa condition, kulang sa preparation ‘yung katawan ko at ‘yung training ko kaya hindi rin maganda ‘yung naging resulta ng competition ko. Then this year, sa tulong nila coach Julius, coach Diwa, at ate Haidie, tinutulungan nila akong mas mag-improve at mailabas ang potential ko para sa laro,” he explained.

Tarro also believes his experience at the World Junior Championships in Egypt provided valuable lessons that have strengthened both his confidence and determination.

Facing many of the world’s top young lifters showed him the level required to compete for medals, while also proving that he has the ability to challenge the best with the right preparation.

“Magandang experience din ‘yun kasi Worlds kasi ‘yun. Mas maraming kalaban at mas marami akong nakilalang malalakas na atleta sa category ko. Isa din ‘yun sa nag-motivate sa akin na kaya ko palang mag-medal, kahit may kulang pa. Kaya nitong Asian Championships gusto ko pang mas galingan para maipakita na kaya ko talaga,” he said.

Tarro takes immense pride in representing Zamboanga City, a community that has become synonymous with Philippine weightlifting after producing Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz. Inspired by the achievements of Diaz and fellow Zamboangueño Olympian Nestor Colonia, the young lifter hopes to continue the city’s rich tradition of producing elite weightlifters.

“Gusto ko hindi lang basta sabihin na Zamboangueño ako. Gusto kong ipakita na bilang Zamboangueño, kaya kong mag-medal kasama ng mga teammate kong taga-Zamboanga,” Tarro said.

Like many aspiring athletes, Tarro dreams of one day competing on the Olympic stage. He credits Diaz not only as an inspiration but also as a mentor who has helped shape both his mindset and technical development.

“Basic naman ‘yun para sa isang atleta, ang maging Olympian. Idol ko kasi si kuya Nestor Colonia. Ako, gusto ko ding maging Olympian at magka-medal sa world stage. Si ate Haidie naman ang naging mentor ko. Tinuturuan niya ako kung paano i-set ang mindset ko at kung paano pagandahin ang technique ko. Kapag may mali ako, kino-correct niya ako. Natutuwa ako na nandiyan siya para i-guide ako sa training at paghahanda ko para sa competition,” he concluded.

With a talented squad led by world champion Albert Delos Santos and an ambitious group of emerging lifters eager to prove themselves, the Philippines will be aiming for another strong showing in Tashkent as the next generation of Filipino weightlifters continues its rise on the international stage.

  • Philippine Women’s Lacrosse Team finishes 10th in historic World Championship debut

Philippine Women’s Lacrosse Team finishes 10th in historic World Championship debut

The Philippine Women’s National Lacrosse Team wrapped up a memorable campaign in its historic debut at the 2026 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship with a 10th-place finish after falling to Argentina, 9-8, in a thrilling overtime classification match over the weekend at Oi Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.

Although the Filipinas narrowly missed out on a top-nine finish, their performance throughout the tournament marked another significant milestone for Philippine lacrosse, as they held their own against some of the sport’s established nations on the world stage.

The classification match against Argentina proved to be one of the most exciting contests of the championship. Team Philippines came out firing, racing to an early 4-1 advantage behind an aggressive attacking display and disciplined defensive effort.

However, Argentina gradually clawed its way back into the match, capitalizing on key possessions and converting crucial scoring opportunities to erase the deficit and force overtime.

In the extra period, Argentina’s Olivia Duarte secured possession after winning the opening draw, setting the stage for Emilia DiLibero to complete her outstanding performance. DiLibero scored her fourth goal of the game, delivering the golden goal that sealed Argentina’s dramatic 9-8 victory and left the Filipinas just short of a landmark finish.

Despite the heartbreaking defeat, the tournament represented a breakthrough moment for the Philippine squad, which was competing in the Women’s World Championship for the first time in the country’s history.

Drawn into a challenging Pool D alongside Israel, host nation Japan, and Czechia, the Philippines exceeded expectations by finishing with a 1-2 record in the group stage. The team displayed resilience throughout the competition, earning valuable international experience while proving it could compete against higher-ranked opponents.

Several of the Philippines’ matches were decided by narrow margins, highlighting the team’s rapid development and growing competitiveness on the global stage.

Head coach Shannon Nee praised his players for their determination, resilience, and willingness to compete against some of the world’s best teams despite their relative lack of experience at this level.

“With close matches against the host country Japan and the overtime loss to Argentina, we have just tapped into what this team can accomplish. Our young ones played fearlessly and our veterans showed leadership in difficult moments. We want to thank World Lacrosse and the Japan Lacrosse Association for all their hard work and support. It was an incredible experience, and Tokyo has our hearts,” Nee said.

The coach emphasized that while the results may not have fully reflected the team’s potential, the tournament laid a strong foundation for the continued growth of lacrosse in the Philippines.

The championship also offered the Filipino players an opportunity to gain invaluable experience competing against elite international opposition—experience that is expected to benefit the program as it continues its long-term development.

At the top of the tournament, the United States once again showcased its dominance in the sport, defeating longtime rival Canada, 16-4, in the gold medal match to capture its fifth consecutive World Lacrosse Women’s Championship title and 10th overall. Canada settled for the silver medal, while Israel secured the bronze after another impressive campaign.

For Team Philippines, attention now shifts to its next major international assignment. Nee and his squad will return to action at the 2026 Asia-Pacific Sixes Lacrosse Championships, scheduled from October 5 to 10 in Queensland, Australia.

Armed with the confidence gained from their World Championship debut and a young core that continues to improve, the Filipinas will look to build on their encouraging performance in Tokyo as they continue establishing themselves among the rising programs in international lacrosse.

  • Faith Nisperos reflects on injury comeback after powering Akari to first PVL On Tour win

Faith Nisperos reflects on injury comeback after powering Akari to first PVL On Tour win

The Akari Chargers finally entered the win column in the 2026 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour preseason conference after outlasting the Choco Mucho Flying Titans, 27-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-22, on Saturday, August 1, at the Polomolok Municipal Gymnasium in Polomolok, South Cotabato.

Coming off a disappointing loss in their tournament opener, the Chargers responded with a determined and disciplined performance against one of the PVL’s perennial contenders. Akari showed poise in crucial moments, surviving two tightly contested opening sets before fending off Choco Mucho’s rally to secure its first victory of the preseason.

A key figure in the Chargers’ breakthrough win was former University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) standout Faith Nisperos, who provided an immediate spark after coming off the bench. The outside hitter finished with nine timely points, delivering several crucial attacks that helped Akari maintain momentum in the closing stages of the match.

For Nisperos, however, the performance represented far more than just a productive outing.

The former collegiate star has spent the past few seasons battling a knee cartilage injury that sidelined her for extended periods and tested both her physical and mental resilience. After months of rehabilitation and recovery, her contribution against Choco Mucho marked another encouraging step in her journey back to full strength.

“I owe it to myself to give out the best performance I can. I owe it to the person who worked really hard to get back to playing the sport we love. I also owe it to the people who helped me, believed in me and were there for me from the start of my healing journey,” Nisperos said during a media interview.

Nisperos also drew inspiration from the warm reception Akari received during its stay in South Cotabato.

“I was also inspired by the people of Polomolok. They have welcomed us and made us feel at home. What boosted me even more was our visit to DOLE Philippines School and seeing the aspiring students,” she added.

Now in her third year in the PVL, the 26-year-old admitted that the road back has not been easy. Injuries forced her to spend much of the past seasons watching from the sidelines, but she leaned on her faith to overcome the setbacks.

“In times of trouble, I really go back, reflect and pray, especially in situations that I have no control over. I always had faith in the Lord that what’s mine will come in His time. The struggles I experienced might just be His way of redirecting me toward the best path,” Nisperos shared.

With her body finally healthy again, Nisperos is focused on steadily rediscovering the form that made her one of the country’s top collegiate players. While eager to contribute more for Akari, she acknowledged that returning to peak condition remains a gradual process.

“I want to unleash the potential within me, and I will be needing the help of my teammates and coaches for that. I know I have grit, perseverance, and reliability. I’m working on myself to become the best version of the player and teammate Akari needs,” she said.

“I take my recovery one day at a time. Despite my body being healed, I still have a lot to relearn on the court. I’m glad I have great muscle memory, but I still have to get used to the intensity of the PVL,” she added.

The victory gave Akari valuable momentum as it improved its standing in the preseason tournament. Currently fifth in the standings, the Chargers will look to build on their breakthrough win when they take on the PLDT High Speed Hitters on Saturday, August 15, in Lanao del Norte.

If Nisperos continues to regain her confidence and rhythm, Akari could become one of the teams to watch as the PVL On Tour preseason conference progresses.
