Eala recently added the biggest achievement of her professional career after defeating World No. 3 and top seed at the Mubadala DC Open to claim the WTA 500 title. The championship marked her first-ever WTA 500 crown and made her the first Filipino player in history to break into the Top 20 of the WTA singles rankings.

“Everyone in tennis should be cheering for her, right? You can say, like, don’t pick favorites, don’t cheer for her, but I’m cheering for markets. If we could bring hundreds of millions of people because she is playing, well then, I’m going to cheer for that because it’s better for tennis,” Roddick said.
The former world No. 1 and 2003 US Open champion added that an Eala Grand Slam triumph would have a significant impact on the growth of tennis, particularly by bringing more fans into the sport.
“I know some people might be like, ‘She doesn’t want a Slam.’ But she’s literally carrying hundreds of millions of fans to our sport and saying, you’re die-hards now. This is great for the sport,” Roddick added.
Roddick clarified that his support is not about favoring one player over another but recognizing the unique influence Eala could have on tennis globally.
“It doesn’t mean you like her more. I love Jessica Pegula. All I’m saying is that I want to see Alex Eala do well consistently because of what impact she will have on the game. Not all impacts are the same with players. With players, you know, Alex Eala winning a Slam is more than someone else winning a Slam,” he concluded.
Eala has wasted little time building on her Washington triumph. Just days after capturing the biggest title of her career, the Filipina star returned to action at the 2026 Canadian Open, where she defeated Alycia Parks, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, to advance to the Round of 32.
She will next face American Caty McNally in the Round of 32, scheduled for Saturday, August 8, as she continues her pursuit of more milestones on the WTA Tour.
