    Philippine men’s football team sets sights on ASEAN Championship run with final roster in place

    The Philippine men’s football team is shifting its focus back to regional competition, unveiling a roster that will carry the country’s hopes in the 2026 ASEAN Championship as it looks to build on its breakthrough run in the previous edition.


    Fresh off securing qualification for the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, the Philippines now turns its attention to Southeast Asia, where a difficult Group B assignment awaits beginning next week.

     

    Midfielder Sandro Reyes headlines the national squad that will attempt to steer the Philippines back into the knockout stage after ending a six-year semifinal drought in the last tournament.

     

    Joining Reyes in midfield are Oskari Kekkonen, Cole Mrowka, Kenji Nishioka, Javier Mariona, and Gavin Muens, giving the team a blend of experience and youth in the center of the park.

     

    The goalkeeping duties will be shared by Quincy Kammeraad, Patrick Deyto, and Eric Mangaoang.

    Between those home fixtures, the Filipinos will travel for away matches against Laos on August 1 and Malaysia on August 8, with only the top two teams in the group advancing to the semifinals.

     

    The tournament, celebrating its 30th anniversary, returns with a single round-robin group stage running from July 24 to August 8. The semifinals and finals, both contested over two legs, are scheduled from August 15 to 26.

     

    Defending champion Vietnam enters the competition as the team to beat after defeating Thailand 5-3 on aggregate in last edition’s championship series to capture its third ASEAN title.

     

    Ten nations are split into two groups, with each team playing four matches on a home-and-away basis before the knockout stage.

     

    For the Philippines, the tournament offers another opportunity to prove that its semifinal appearance in 2024 was not a one-off. That campaign marked the country’s return to the final four after a six-year absence and signaled progress for a program that continues to gain momentum.

     

    That momentum only grew after the men’s national team booked a place in next year’s Asian Games, joining the Philippine women’s squad to complete the country’s representation in football at the Aichi-Nagoya meet from September 19 to October 4.

     

    Before shifting its attention to the continental stage, however, the Philippines faces the immediate challenge of navigating a competitive ASEAN Championship group and making another deep run in the region’s premier football tournament.

    PBA: Is Phoenix finally ready to take the next step?

    The Phoenix Fuel Masters are off to a perfect 3-0 start, and while many expected the usual title contenders to dominate the early headlines, it has been Charles Tiu’s young and energetic squad that has captured the attention of basketball fans.

     

    The question now is simple: Is Phoenix finally ready to make the leap from rebuilding franchise to legitimate contender?

     

    For years, the Fuel Masters have been assembling young talent through the draft, smart acquisitions, and player development. This conference may finally be the moment where all those pieces begin to fit together.

More importantly, he brings valuable winning experience to an already promising roster.

     

    But Mamuyac isn’t the only “new” addition making an impact.

     

    The return of Kai Ballungay from injury almost feels like signing another star.

     

    The versatile 6-foot-7 forward provides everything modern basketball demands switchable defense, rebounding, athleticism, and the ability to stretch the floor. His presence immediately raises Phoenix’s ceiling, giving Coach Charles Tiu another versatile weapon capable of guarding multiple positions while fitting seamlessly into the team’s up-tempo style.

     

    Together, they strengthen what is arguably one of the most exciting young cores in the PBA.

    Can Charles Tiu finally establish himself among the PBA’s elite coaches? A strong Governor’s Cup run would certainly strengthen that conversation. Phoenix’s style of play has also drawn comparisons to another independent franchise that recently climbed the league hierarchy.

    Like the Elasto Painters, Phoenix isn’t built around aging superstars or headline-grabbing veterans. Instead, they’re relying on youth, relentless pace, defensive versatility, and a system that empowers multiple players rather than one dominant scorer.

    Rey Nambatac wasted little time putting his difficult Commissioner’s Cup campaign behind him, delivering a strong all-around performance to lead TNT Tropang 5G to a 106-103 victory over the Macau Giant Pandas in their opening game of the PBA Season 50 Governor’s Cup on Sunday.


    Nambatac finished with 23 points, six assists, and three rebounds as the defending champions held off a furious Macau rally after seeing a 15-point lead trimmed to just three in the closing minutes.

     

    The veteran guard’s performance marked a sharp turnaround from his previous conference, where he struggled to find his rhythm and posted career-low production since joining TNT.

     

    “To be honest, ‘yung last conference ko was a wakeup call, an eye-opener na rin para sa akin,” Nambatac said.

     

    The former Letran standout averaged only 5.5 points, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 rebounds in 27 games during the Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup. 

     

    His struggles extended into the Finals against Barangay Ginebra, a surprising dip considering he was named the PBA Press Corps Finals MVP when TNT won the same tournament last season.

     

    Rather than dwell on those struggles, Nambatac said he entered the Governor’s Cup determined to restore the level of play that helped establish him as one of TNT’s key backcourt weapons.

     

    “Sabi ko, hindi puwedeng ganun. So I need to step up and ibalik ko ‘yung usual na laro ko, and dito mag-i-start ‘yun sa conference na ‘to,” he said.

    The offseason also saw Nambatac become the subject of trade speculation, with reports linking him to a possible move to Titan Ultra in exchange for Joshua Munzon. 

     

    He stayed with TNT, however, and immediately rewarded the team’s faith with one of his best performances in recent months.

     

    Nambatac’s offense proved crucial as TNT weathered Macau’s late charge to secure its first victory of the conference.

     

    Still, the 31-year-old guard knows sustaining that level will be the bigger challenge as the tournament progresses.

    Suarez demolished American veteran Manuel Avila in just 2:31 of the opening round of their WBO International super-featherweight title bout in California, strengthening his case for another crack at a world championship.

     

    The explosive victory served as another message to Navarrete, the reigning WBO and IBF junior lightweight champion, who has yet to settle unfinished business with the Filipino after their first meeting last May ended in a controversial no-contest.

    One name that has surfaced is former three-division world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Vasyl Lomachenko, who is rumored to be considering a return after last fighting in 2024. 

    While Suarez acknowledged the possibility, he admitted a bout with the Ukrainian legend is not his preferred option because no world title would be at stake.

     

    Still, Suarez is leaving the decision to his team, including veteran promoter Sampson Lewkowicz. 

    Whether it leads to a long-awaited rematch with Navarrete or another high-profile challenge, the Filipino contender has already done his part inside the ring—making a statement that will be difficult for the champions of the division to ignore.

    Annie Ramirez once again proved why she remains one of the Philippines’ top jiu-jitsu athletes, adding another gold medal to her growing international legacy after successfully defending her title at the 10th Jiu-Jitsu Asian Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan.


    The Filipina fighter stood atop the adult female -57kg division after defeating Mongolia’s Shurentsetseg Enkhmunkh in the championship match on Saturday, securing her second straight Asian title in the category. 

     

    Ramirez previously captured gold in the same division during the 2025 edition held in Amman, Jordan.

     

    Beyond another medal, the victory represented another milestone in Ramirez’s decorated career. 

    The 35-year-old now owns three Asian Championship gold medals, having also claimed the top spot during the 2023 tournament in Bangkok, Thailand.

     

    “Winning the gold is a blessing and a great honor. I’m thankful to God for the strength and opportunity to compete, and I’m proud to raise the Philippine flag on the international stage. This victory belongs to everyone who has been part of this journey,” Ramirez said.

     

    Ramirez’s latest triumph also continues a remarkable year for the veteran athlete, who opened 2026 with a gold medal performance at the 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China last April. 

    With major international events ahead, she hopes to carry her winning momentum into the next stage of her career.

    “To our incredible athletes: we are beyond grateful for the relentless hard work, early mornings, and sacrifices you poured into this tournament,” wrote the national federation in a Facebook post Sunday.

     

    “Every drop of sweat on the mats represents your unwavering dedication to jiu-jitsu. You left it all out there and represented the Philippines with absolute pride!”

     

    Following their successful campaign in Kazakhstan, the national team will turn its attention to the upcoming World Championships in Abu Dhabi, scheduled from Aug. 6 to 9. 

     

    The federation believes the lessons gained from the Asian Championship will help the squad prepare for an even bigger challenge ahead.

     

    “This is merely a stepping stone. We are incredibly optimistic about the upcoming competitions.     NAVI PH came within two games of a championship breakthrough, but Team Vitality’s late surge denied the Filipina squad another Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Women’s Invitational (MWI) crown as the Indonesian powerhouse completed a successful title defense at the Esports World Cup in Paris on Saturday, July 18.

     

    The Philippine representative ended its campaign with a silver medal finish after dropping a 4-2 series decision to Team Vitality, earning a $90,000 runner-up prize while watching its hopes of lifting the trophy slip away after a promising start.

     

    NAVI PH immediately showed why it was considered one of the tournament favorites, taking control of the opening game with a commanding performance. 

     

    The Filipinas overwhelmed Team Vitality in just 15 minutes, setting the tone for what appeared to be another deep tournament run.

     

    However, the defending champions quickly responded. Team Vitality adjusted its approach in Game 2, shutting down NAVI PH’s momentum and leveling the series at 1-1.

     

    The third game turned into a test of endurance as both teams battled through a 28-minute slugfest. NAVI PH held firm against Vitality’s pressure for most of the match, but a crucial late Lord push broke through the Filipinas’ defenses and gave the Indonesian squad its first lead of the series.

     

    Refusing to let the match slip away, NAVI PH answered back in Game 4 with one of its strongest performances of the series. 

     

    The Filipina squad regained control and tied the championship match at 2-2, putting the defending champions under pressure heading into the final stretch. But the turning point came in Game 5.

    Team Vitality came out aggressively, building an early 13-2 kill advantage and taking full control of the match. 

     

    NAVI PH struggled to find answers against Viorelle “Vival” Chen, whose Ling performance proved to be one of the biggest difference-makers. Vival finished the game with a 3-1-6 KDA, creating constant pressure across the map and helping Vitality regain the series lead.

     

    The Indonesian side carried that momentum into Game 6, where Vival once again became the centerpiece of Vitality’s championship-clinching performance. Her Ling delivered a Maniac in the deciding game, sealing Team Vitality’s second consecutive MWI championship.

     

    The result marked a reversal from the teams’ previous encounter. NAVI PH had swept Team Vitality in their 2024 meeting, but this time the defending champions had the final answer, overcoming the Filipinas’ early dominance and proving their championship experience on the biggest stage.

     

    Despite falling short of the title, NAVI PH’s silver-medal run further highlighted the Philippines’ growing presence in women’s MLBB esports. The team showcased its ability to challenge the world’s best and pushed the reigning champions to six games before ultimately surrendering the crown.

    Elizabeth Means showed her toughness, but even her determination could not prevent Gilas Pilipinas Women from running into a difficult finish at the 2026 FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series–Jinan Stop.


    Playing through a painful right shoulder injury, Means tried to keep the Philippines alive after suffering the setback during a collision in the qualifying draw. 


    Her effort highlighted the team’s resilience, but the injury eventually became a major obstacle as Gilas faced two formidable French squads in the group stage on Saturday at Jinan Cunac Mall in China.


    The Philippines found itself in a high-pressure matchup against fellow Filipino side Manila Gilas after both teams secured victories over Vietnam in their respective qualifying games. 


    With elimination on the line, Gilas appeared ready to move forward after building a 15-11 advantage with just 1:24 remaining.


    However, the momentum shifted when Means attempted to navigate through a screen set by Tin Cayabyab. The contact resulted in a shoulder injury, forcing Gilas to finish the contest with their import playing through discomfort.


    Despite the setback, Gilas Women held their ground and completed a 19-14 victory. Mikka Cacho carried the scoring load with six points, while Camille Clarin and Tantoy Ferrer contributed five points each. Means still managed to add four points despite the injury.

    For Manila Gilas, Ann Pingol and Cayabyab paced the team with five points apiece, while Sam Harada and Kaye Pingol chipped in two points each.

The Filipinas suffered a 21-14 defeat, with Yohana Ewodo leading the French attack with 11 points and four rebounds. Samantha Peytour added eight points, while Clarin and Cacho combined for 11 points for the Philippines.


    The Jinan campaign ended with lessons for a Gilas squad that continues to gain international experience in the fast-paced 3×3 format. The FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series remains one of the premier global competitions for women’s 3×3 basketball, featuring national teams, clubs, and elite players competing across multiple international stops.


    Despite the setback in China, Gilas Women will have little time to regroup as the team heads to the next stop in Batam, Indonesia, scheduled for July 23 to 24. The Batam leg is part of the expanded 2026 Women’s Series calendar, which includes 25 events across Asia, Europe, and other regions before the season finale in Shanghai.


    For Gilas Women, the upcoming stop offers another opportunity to test their growth against some of the world’s best 3×3 programs and build momentum heading deeper into the international season.

    Phoenix Super LPG proved that its unbeaten start is no fluke, weathering a furious late rally from Barangay Ginebra San Miguel to escape with an 81-78 victory and extend its winning streak to three games in the PBA Season 50 Governor’s Cup on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

     

    The Fuelmasters entered the matchup with an opportunity to seize sole possession of the Group B lead and capitalized on a Ginebra squad still adjusting to a new import while missing star guard Scottie Thompson. 

     

    Phoenix dictated the tempo for most of the contest before surviving a dramatic finish sparked by Riley Grigsby, whose spectacular debut nearly turned the game around.

     

    Import BJ Johnson once again provided the offensive spark for Phoenix, finishing with 23 points, while Ricci Rivero continued his strong campaign with 16 points and nine rebounds in a balanced effort that lifted the Fuelmasters to a perfect 3-0 record.

     

    Phoenix head coach Charles Tiu admitted his team wanted to take advantage of the circumstances surrounding Ginebra.

     

    “We wanted to try to catch them off guard,” said Phoenix coach Charles Tiu.


    “It’s the first game with [a new] import and wala is Scottie Thompson. We wanted to step on the gas and they’re Ginebra for a reason. They didn’t wanna quit and they made a big scare,” he added.

     

    The Fuelmasters appeared to have the game under control after stretching the lead to 81-74 with only 18 seconds left, but Grigsby had other plans.

    Making an immediate impact in his first game for Barangay Ginebra, the American import knocked down back-to-back baskets to slash the deficit to just three points with six seconds remaining, giving the Gin Kings one last opportunity to steal the game.

     

    Ginebra’s final possession, however, fell short when Jeremiah Gray missed a three-point attempt that could have either forced overtime or delivered a stunning victory via the league’s four-point shot, allowing Phoenix to hold on for the win.

    Compounding Ginebra’s frustrations, head coach Tim Cone was ejected late in the contest after receiving his second technical foul.

     

    With momentum firmly on its side, Phoenix now turns its attention to Rain or Shine on Tuesday, July 21, aiming to stretch its unbeaten run to four games. Ginebra, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when it faces Blackwater on Friday, July 24.
