    IOC sets groundbreaking rule limiting Olympic women’s events to biological females

    The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has taken a decisive step to reshape the landscape of women’s Olympic competition. 


    On Thursday, the organization unveiled a new eligibility policy that limits participation in female events to biological females, effectively excluding transgender women athletes and many with certain differences in sexual development (DSD).

     

    The move comes ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and signals a shift toward uniformity in a field long marked by fragmented rules. 

     

    “At the Olympic Games, even the smallest margins can be the difference between victory and defeat… it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the female category. In addition, in some sports it would simply not be safe,” said IOC President Kirsty Coventry.

     

    Central to the new regulation is a science-based screening process that uses the SRY gene, a marker of male sex development as a definitive measure. According to the IOC, “the presence of the SRY gene is fixed throughout life and represents highly accurate evidence that an athlete has experienced male sex development.” 

     

    Only athletes with rare conditions such as Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS), who do not gain a performance advantage from testosterone, are eligible as exceptions.

     

    This marks a significant policy reversal for the IOC. Previously, the organization left gender eligibility to international federations, declining to implement a universal standard.

    The announcement also signals the return of formal gender verification for Olympic competition, a practice that had fallen out of use due to ethical and scientific concerns. The 18-month consultation period preceding the policy sought to balance inclusion, safety, and competitive integrity, creating what the IOC calls a “universal rule” for female elite sport.

     

    The timing underscores the stakes that no transgender women competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics, though Laurel Hubbard competed in Tokyo 2021. The IOC notes that it remains unclear how many athletes might be affected at the Olympic level under the new policy, but the move is designed to ensure that the female category remains fair and scientifically grounded.

     

    “With the rare exception of athletes with a diagnosis of Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS) or other rare differences/disorders in sex development (DSDs) who do not benefit from the anabolic and/or performance-enhancing effects of testosterone, no athlete with an SRY-positive screen is eligible for competition in the female category at an IOC event,” the statement added.

     

    By codifying these rules, the IOC is not only aiming to protect fairness in competition but also to send a clear message about the integrity and safety of female Olympic sport as the world turns its attention to Los Angeles in 2028.

    “I guess it’s me just getting used to playing again and matagal na rin ‘yung injury ko, so na-build up ko rin ‘yung confidence ko coming into this tournament,” the 30-year-old outside hitter said.

     

    For Dy, the journey back hasn’t been simple. A patellar tendon tear in her right knee previously disrupted her rhythm during her stint with F2 Logistics and even in her early run with PLDT. But instead of rushing the process, she leaned into preparation, both on and off the court.

     

    “For me personally, I think we had a longer preparation before coming into this tournament. And, not just court-wise, but also physically. Basically, I couldn’t stop rehabbing my knee, so that’s one thing that really helped me,” said the former DLSU standout.

    Now, that patience is paying off. Dy has gradually transformed into a dependable option again, especially in high-pressure situations like their clash with Farm Fresh.

    His continued absence from media availability prompted the PBA Commissioner’s Office to step in, issuing a memorandum to the TNT franchise reminding them of their responsibilities to supporters and the press.

     

    Commissioner Willie Marcial confirmed that the memo was sent following Bol Bol’s refusal to face the media, even after encouragement from team manager Jojo Lastimosa.

     

    Despite the situation, TNT head coach Chot Reyes stood by his import, emphasizing that Bol is still adjusting—not just to the PBA’s physical style of play, but also to the attention that comes with being one of the league’s biggest names. 

     

    “He really doesn’t like media attention. He’s a very private, very shy person,” Reyes said. 

    The son of late NBA player Manute Bol is navigating unfamiliar territory, where fan interaction and media presence are part of the role.

    For Juan Gomez de Liano, the challenge right now isn’t about putting up numbers—it’s about knowing when to stop.

     

    After a promising start with the Converge FiberXers, the guard remains sidelined for the second straight game due to a bone contusion in his right knee—an injury that has proven more persistent than expected. 

     

    In his absence, Converge absorbed a narrow 103-99 defeat to the San Miguel Beermen, sliding to a 1-3 record in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup.

     

    Gomez de Liano traced the injury back to their March 14 outing against the Terrafirma Dyip, where Converge fell 111-100 in overtime. 

     

    Despite taking a knee-to-knee hit during that game, he pushed through and finished the contest before feeling the full effects afterward.

     

    “Knee to knee siya. Malakas ang impact. Adrenaline lahat kaya I played the rest of the game (against Terrafirma). After the game, I was so sore,” said Gomez de Liano.

    Initially expecting a quick return, the 24-year-old admitted recovery has taken longer than anticipated, forcing him to take a more careful approach.

     

    “Bone contusion against Terrafirma. It’s going to take awhile to heal. I thought I will be back in a week. But there is still pain in certain movements so I’m not rushing it,” he said.

     

    While medical timelines suggest bone contusions can heal in at least two weeks depending on severity, Gomez de Liano emphasized that his case is not serious—but still requires patience.

    “It’s not a major (injury) but it will take awhile to heal,” said Gomez de Liano.

     

    With no clear timetable for his return, his availability for upcoming games—including a potential matchup against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel—remains uncertain. 

     

    That matchup carries added weight, given his standout performance against Ginebra in the previous conference where he averaged 27.5 points in their quarterfinal series.

     

    For now, Gomez de Liano is choosing caution over urgency, prioritizing full recovery as Converge navigates a challenging stretch without one of its key playmakers.

    Philippine Ski and Snowboard Federation aims for a bigger Winter Olympics delegation with local athletes

    The Philippines is setting its sights on a bigger presence in the next Winter Olympics, with the Philippine Ski and Snowboard Federation (PSSF) confident it can send a larger delegation. 

     

    PSSF President Jim Apelar revealed that more athletes, including those with Filipino roots or heritage, have expressed interest in representing the country in winter sports.

     

    Apelar noted that the Philippines has already established a history in the Winter Olympics, having sent athletes to seven editions of the Games starting with the 1972 Sapporo Olympics. 

     

    Meanwhile recently, the Philippines fielded alpine skiers Tallulah Proulx and Francis Ceccarelli in the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, with Proulx placing 50th in the slalom and 52nd in the giant slalom, while Ceccarelli finished 54th in the giant slalom.

     

    With this, interest from the Filipino has created a unique opportunity for the country to recruit athletes living in snow-rich nations. 

     

    Apelar explained that the federation has received around ten inquiries from athletes wanting to represent the Philippines, and through a process called “nation transfer,” they could compete under the Philippine flag if they have the proper passport. 

     

    The PSSF is also focusing on developing homegrown athletes. One of its key initiatives is the roller skiing program, which Apelar calls “kalsada roller skiing.” 

     

    This innovative program uses wheeled skis to replicate about 90 percent of the movements of cross-country skiing, providing a summer training alternative for young athletes.

    Currently, the federation has set up four roller skiing clubs in Rizal Binangonan, Cardona, Morong, and Teresa while training 52 kids each week.

    After dropping the second set, La Salle recalibrated and leaned on composure down the stretch. The unbeaten start, their first since Season 85 in 2023, now puts them on the brink of at least a playoff for a Final Four berth.

     

    Angel Canino once again anchored the charge with 17 points built on 15 attacks and two blocks, while also contributing across the floor with seven excellent digs and five excellent receptions. 

    Support came steadily, with Shevana Laput adding 14 points and rookie Shane Reterta continuing her rise with 10 points, 15 excellent receptions, and two aces.

     

    On the other side, UST absorbed a costly setback. The loss dropped them to 5-4, tightening their hold on a Final Four spot. 

     

    Still, Angge Poyos delivered a standout effort with 20 points, 12 excellent receptions, and seven digs, while Regine Jurado added 12 markers. Middle blocker Blessing Unekwe chipped in eight points in what was her most productive game of the season.

    While La Salle builds momentum, the middle of the standings is turning into a battle of survival.

    Adamson Lady Falcons made sure they remain firmly in that conversation, forcing a tie for fourth with UST after a dominant straight-sets win over the Ateneo Blue Eagles women’s volleyball, 25-17, 27-25, 25-16.

     

    Shaina Nitura took over in emphatic fashion, erupting for 25 points in just three sets. Backing her up were Frances Mordi with 15 points and Eloi Dote with six, as Adamson showcased a balanced attack to secure the crucial win.

     

    Ateneo, meanwhile, continues to search for answers near the bottom of the standings. Zel Tsunashima and Alex Montoro paced the team with nine points each, but it wasn’t enough to halt their slide.

     

    With the second round in full swing, every match now carries heavier implications. La Salle looks to extend its dominance against UP Fighting Maroons women’s volleyball on March 29, while UST aims to steady its campaign against FEU Lady Tamaraws.

     

    Adamson, riding newfound momentum, faces UE Lady Warriors on March 28, while Ateneo braces for a tough test against defending champions NU Lady Bulldogs.
