    Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Patrick Gregorio has unveiled an ambitious proposal that could reshape the future of sports development in the country, calling for the establishment of the Philippines’ first-ever Sports University under the University of the Philippines (UP) System.

     

    Gregorio introduced the vision during his commencement address to the graduating class of the UP College of Human Kinetics at the Varsity Training Center, where he urged one of the country’s most respected academic institutions to spearhead a transformative initiative that would elevate sports beyond competition and position it as a key driver of education, research, innovation, economic development, and nation-building.

     

    The proposal reflects Gregorio’s broader vision of creating a comprehensive institution dedicated to the advancement of sports in the Philippines. Rather than focusing solely on athlete development, the Sports University would serve as a center of excellence for sports science, coaching, physical education, sports medicine, nutrition, sports psychology, sports management, biomechanics, and high-performance research. It would also provide aspiring athletes with opportunities to pursue higher education while continuing to compete at the highest level.

    Addressing the graduating students, Gregorio challenged the UP community to embrace a pioneering role in shaping the future of Philippine sports, emphasizing that sustained international success requires more than talent alone. He stressed the need to develop a complete ecosystem that nurtures athletes while also producing the coaches, trainers, researchers, administrators, and sports professionals who play equally vital roles behind the scenes.

     

    The proposal has already received strong support from Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) Chairman Alejandro “Al” Tengco, whose agency remains one of the PSC’s largest funding partners through its legally mandated contribution to Philippine sports.

     

    Speaking during a recent event, Tengco endorsed the concept and expressed his willingness to work closely with the PSC to help turn the vision into reality.

     

    “It’s about time that our country creates a Sports University. Chairman Pato and I discussed how we can help each other beyond Pagcor’s monthly support to the PSC. I fully support the idea of building a sports university,” Tengco said.

     

    PAGCOR plays a crucial role in the country’s sports development program through its court-mandated five percent share of gross gaming revenues allocated to the PSC. The contribution amounts to nearly P400 million every month, translating to approximately P5 billion annually, making it the backbone of funding for national athletes, grassroots initiatives, training programs, and international competitions.

    According to Tengco, the increased financial support has helped fuel the country’s recent rise on the international sporting stage, where Filipino athletes have continued to deliver strong performances across multiple disciplines.

     

    However, he emphasized that funding alone does not guarantee success, pointing instead to the leadership and governance within the PSC as equally important factors behind the country’s sporting progress.

     

    “If you noticed, there are many Filipino athletes who have been winning lately. One reason is the funding from Pagcor – that’s our support to Philippine sports. But more than that, it’s the vision and governance of PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio. No matter how big the budget is, if you cannot allocate it well, use it efficiently, and it doesn’t reach the athletes the right way, there’s no use,” he added.

     

    Gregorio’s proposal arrives at a significant moment for Philippine sports. In recent years, the country has celebrated unprecedented achievements on the global stage, highlighted by Olympic, world championship, and continental successes across sports such as boxing, weightlifting, gymnastics, athletics, billiards, and esports. These accomplishments have underscored the growing potential of Filipino athletes while also exposing the need for stronger institutional support to sustain long-term excellence.

     

    A dedicated Sports University could address many of those needs by integrating elite athletic training with academic education and scientific research under one institution. Similar models have proven successful in countries with established high-performance sports systems, where universities serve as hubs for innovation, talent identification, athlete development, and coaching education.

     

    Beyond producing future champions, the proposed institution would also help professionalize careers in sports by developing experts in sports medicine, rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, performance analytics, event management, sports governance, and sports technology. Such a multidisciplinary approach could strengthen every level of the Philippine sporting ecosystem while creating new career opportunities for Filipinos interested in the industry.

     

    Although the proposal remains in its conceptual stage and would require extensive collaboration among the UP System, the national government, Congress, and key stakeholders, it has already sparked discussions about the future direction of Philippine sports development.

     

    For Gregorio, the vision extends far beyond medals and championships. His proposal seeks to build a lasting institution that can produce not only world-class athletes but also the educators, scientists, coaches, administrators, and innovators who will shape the country’s sporting landscape for generations to come.

     

    If realized, the establishment of a Sports University under the UP System could become one of the most significant milestones in Philippine sports history, providing a sustainable foundation for excellence while reinforcing sports as a powerful instrument for education, national pride, and inclusive development.

    SEA Plus Youth Games takes shape as PH pushes new pathway for Asia’s rising athletes 

    What started as an idea to address a missing step in youth sports development is now becoming one of the Philippines’ biggest international sporting projects.


    The inaugural Southeast Asian Plus Youth Games (SEAPYG) took a significant step toward becoming a reality after holding its first Executive Council Meeting on Saturday at Solaire Resort in Parañaque City, gathering representatives from Southeast Asia and neighboring regions ahead of the event’s scheduled debut in December 2027.

     

    For Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, the Games were born out of a simple question during the 2025 Asian Youth Games in Bahrain: where do promising young athletes compete after national grassroots tournaments but before reaching the continental level?

     

    “Naisip ko yan nung (2025) Bahrain Asian Youth Games. Asian Youth Games papunta sa Youth Games parang kulang. Ano ‘yan pagdating ng school, diretso ka na sa Asian Youth Games? Sila Palarong Pambansa, sila Batang Pinoy diretso na sa Asian Youth Games? Parang may kulang,” said Tolentino.

     

    That gap became the foundation of the SEAPYG, an under-16 multisport event envisioned as a developmental bridge rather than simply another competition on the calendar.

     

    Tolentino also explained why the event carries the word “Plus” in its name, emphasizing that the tournament aims to extend beyond Southeast Asia and raise the overall level of competition.

     

    “Southeast Asian Plus Youth Games. Bakit plus? Para yung non-Southeast Asian maisama natin para mas marami, mas maganda, competitive,” he explained.

    The concept has already generated regional interest as Eight Southeast Asian nations participated in Saturday’s Executive Council Meeting, while delegates from 15 countries under the tournament’s “Plus” category also attended. Among those represented were the Maldives, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Chinese Taipei, Bahrain, and Nepal.

     

    Although Japan, Palestine, North Korea, and India were unable to send representatives, Tolentino remains optimistic that their absence from the meeting will not prevent them from competing when the Games officially begin.

     

    “Dalawang school of thoughts. Pwedeng umattend ngayon pero hindi pala magpaparticipate. Pwedeng wala dito pero magpaparticipate. So, kaya sabi ko kanina na we’re praying na lahat ng nandito will participate. And, positive naman. I think they will. So, this will be a very, very good start and exciting and for the country, for the youth, lahat nandito na,” he added.

     

    Momentum continues to build toward the inaugural edition, with representatives from eight of the 11 Southeast Asian Games Federation members and delegates from 17 invited National Olympic Committees taking part in the planning process.

     

    The Philippines will host the Games across four venue clusters—Manila, Pasig, Tagaytay, and Subic—with competitions expected to showcase the country’s existing sports infrastructure.

     

    Local Organizing Committee president and CEO Tatas Suzara said the focus is not only on staging the tournament but on delivering an event that meets international expectations.

     

    “Of course, my role here as President, CEO is to make sure we deliver the games with international standards. I think, with 23 sports and four clusters, we will be able to deliver at par with international standards with different sports,” said Suzara.

     

    He added that the organizing committee plans to maximize facilities managed by the Philippine Sports Commission under chairman Pato Gregorio, including the PhilSports Complex in Pasig City and the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.

     

    More than a new regional competition, the SEAPYG is being positioned as a long-term investment in athlete development—one designed to give the region’s next generation a meaningful stage before they step onto the wider Asian and global sporting scene.

Her growing list of accomplishments has earned worldwide recognition and inspired countless young Filipinos to pick up a racket, raising hopes for a brighter future for the sport in a country traditionally dominated by basketball and boxing.

     

    PHILTA Secretary General John Rey Tiangco believes Eala’s success extends far beyond her achievements on the court, describing the 20-year-old as a transformative figure whose influence is helping reshape the landscape of Philippine tennis.

    “Siyempre natutuwa tayo. Kasi yung role natin, kailangan natin i-promote yung sport. Dahil nandiyan na siya Alex, ‘di lang siya ambassador ng tennis, ambassador siya ng Pilipinas. So ngayon, dahil sa kanya, mas maraming gustong humawak na raketa, magtry, maglalaro,” Tiangco said during a media interaction.

     

    According to Tiangco, Eala has become proof that Filipino athletes can compete against the world’s best, giving aspiring players the confidence to dream bigger while also attracting greater public interest, sponsorship opportunities, and investment in the sport.

     

    “Yung mga naglalaro na, ngayon alam nila na kaya ng Pilipina na makarating dun sa world stage. At siyempre, mas maraming nanonood ngayon, mas maraming nakaka-notice sa tennis, mas maraming sponsors at mas maraming yung tulong na makukuha para mas lalong makapag-develop ng kabataan,” he added.

     

    While acknowledging Eala’s impact, Tiangco emphasized that PHILTA’s responsibility now is to capitalize on the momentum by creating a stronger development pathway for young athletes across the country.

    He stressed that producing another player of Eala’s caliber will require significant investment in grassroots programs, better infrastructure, and continued education for coaches.

     

    “We have to open opportunities for everyone. ‘Di naman ibig sabihin na merong ganito, automatic na yun. Kailangan mas dumami yung courts. Maging available siya sa lahat ng lugar. Kailangan may magandang programa. Dahil si Alex naman, ‘di naman siya magiging ganyan kung ‘di siya nakapag-training na magagaling yung coaches niya. So tuloy-tuloy yung ginagawa nating certification ng coaches training natin,” Tiangco continued.

     

    Beyond improving facilities and coaching standards, Tiangco also underscored the importance of exposing young Filipino players to international competition at an early age. He pointed to Eala’s extensive junior career overseas as a key factor behind her rapid development and believes providing similar opportunities to future prospects should be one of PHILTA’s priorities.

     

    “Marami dapat tayong competition. Di lang local si Alex, kaya ganyan yung level niya. Bata pa lang siya nakita niya niya yung competitive level sa international scene. What we are trying to bring in now is more international tournaments. As for the juniors, para they can see the level of competitiveness. So meron na tayong per year, meron tayong four ITFs. Gakaroon tayo ng hopefully yung men’s na M15. Then sana mababa pa natin dito yung ATF. Siyempre yung WTA,” he stated.

     

    The PHILTA official said hosting more International Tennis Federation (ITF), Asian Tennis Federation (ATF), and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) events in the Philippines would give local players valuable opportunities to compete against higher-level opponents without having to travel abroad, accelerating their development while raising the country’s profile on the global tennis calendar.

     

    For Tiangco, however, Eala’s greatest contribution goes beyond trophies, rankings, or milestones. He believes the Filipino star has become an ideal role model whose professionalism, humility, and unwavering pride in representing the Philippines have made her an inspiration to athletes of all ages.

     

    “Sabi ko nga, napakarami natin pwedeng matutunan at parating tayong nai-inspire ni Alex. Sabi nga niya, be the best self. So dapat pagbutuhin natin yung ating sarili. At siyempre, yung pinakamaganda ay parating proud siya sa kanyang bansa. Ying mindset niya Alex, parating growth mindset kasi. So makikita ko, parating nag-iimprove siya tuwing laro niya, tuwing tournament, nag-iimprove siya. Every year, nakita ko yun, di lang sa rankings siya, dun sa laro niya, talagang parating nag-iimprove,” Tiangco concluded.

     

    Eala returned to the Philippines on Sunday, July 12, following her historic Wimbledon campaign, receiving a warm welcome from fans eager to celebrate her latest achievement. She is scheduled to meet supporters during “Home Court: The Alex Eala Fan Meet Experience,” a special event hosted by Globe at Glorietta in Makati City on Wednesday, July 15.

    Mika De Guzman and Jelo Albo successfully defended their respective women’s and men’s singles championships to headline another memorable edition of the Philippine National Badminton Open 2026, which concluded Sunday at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City.

     

    While a new generation of challengers attempted to end their reigns, both national team standouts showed championship poise when it mattered most, extending their dominance in the country’s premier badminton tournament.

     

    De Guzman delivered perhaps the most commanding campaign of the week.

     

    The four-time UAAP MVP never dropped a single game throughout the tournament before capping her title defense with a clinical 21-6, 21-7 victory over former Ateneo teammate and UAAP Season 86 co-MVP Jochelle Alvarez in a final that lasted just 30 minutes.

     

    The triumph secured De Guzman’s fourth consecutive Philippine National Badminton Open women’s singles crown, further cementing her status as the country’s top female shuttler.

     

    “This is so big for me. I think every year andami kong iba’t ibang nakakalaban; a lot of rising stars willing to get the championship, but I’m happy that I’m always there on top being the champion,” said De Guzman.

     

    “As I said, it was different players every year po that are eyeing the championship, but I’m very happy that my coaches from PBad — coach Joper (Escueta), coach Kenneth (Monterubio), coach Ariel (Magnaye), and coach Kennie (Asuncion-Robles) — really helped us to give our best in every tournament that we play, and help us be physically and mentally ready,” added the four-time UAAP MVP.

     

    Albo’s road to another championship proved far more challenging.

     

    Facing fellow Smash Pilipinas standout Clarence Villaflor, the University of the Philippines product dropped the opening set before mounting a determined comeback, winning 18-21, 21-12, 21-14 to complete his third straight men’s singles title.

     

    After Villaflor dictated the pace early, Albo responded with the aggressive style that has become his trademark, taking control of the final two games to finish the match in one hour and 18 minutes.

    The doubles competitions also produced standout performances, with Andrea Hernandez and Julius Villabrille emerging as the tournament’s biggest winners after capturing two titles apiece.

     

    Hernandez and Villabrille first joined forces to claim the mixed doubles championship, defeating Lea Inlayo and Christian Bernardo, 21-15, 21-14. The victory marked Villabrille’s third consecutive mixed doubles crown after winning the previous two editions alongside Nicole Albo.

     

    Hernandez later secured a second championship by partnering with Mary Destiny Untal in the women’s doubles final, where they edged Inlayo and Jeya Pinlac in straight sets, 21-19, 21-19.

     

    Villabrille completed his own double-title haul after teaming up with Solomon Padiz Jr. to successfully defend the men’s doubles championship for a third consecutive year. The pair recovered from an opening-set defeat to overcome fellow national team members Christian Bernardo and Alvin Morada, 14-21, 21-14, 21-17.

     

    The doubles champions each received gold medals, championship trophies, MWell watches, and P120,000, while the runners-up earned P60,000 and the bronze medalists collected P30,000.

     

    With familiar champions once again standing atop the podium, the tournament not only celebrated sustained excellence but also showcased the depth of Philippine badminton, as established stars and rising contenders continued to raise the level of competition on the national stage.

    The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has officially appointed Karate Pilipinas president Richard Lim as the country’s Chef de Mission for the 20th Asian Games, which will take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026.

     

    The announcement was made during the POC General Assembly held in Pasay City on Thursday, July 9, with POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino confirming that Lim will lead the Philippine delegation in one of the continent’s biggest multi-sport competitions.

     

    Lim takes over the role from businessman and sports executive Al Panlilio, who stepped down after concluding that he would be unable to fully dedicate himself to the demanding responsibilities of Chef de Mission.

    Panlilio, who was elected president of the National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP) in April 2026, informed the POC that balancing his new responsibilities with overseeing the country’s Asian Games campaign would not allow him to give the position the attention it deserves.

     

    “Al Panlilio admitted to us that it would be unfair to everyone if he cannot give his 100 percent commitment as Chef de Mission for our Filipino athletes and delegates in the Asian Games. We accepted his resignation,” Tolentino said to the media.

     

    The appointment of Lim ensures continuity in Team Philippines’ preparations as the experienced sports administrator has already handled similar responsibilities on the international stage.

     

    Lim is well-regarded within Philippine sports circles for his leadership in Karate Pilipinas and has steadily built a reputation as an effective sports executive capable of managing large delegations in major international competitions. His previous experience as Chef de Mission during the 2025 Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China, provided him with valuable insight into coordinating athletes, coaches, and support personnel in a multi-sport environment.

    Before that assignment, Lim also served as Deputy Chef de Mission for the Bahrain Asian Youth Games, further strengthening his credentials for one of Philippine sports’ most important leadership positions.

     

    Highlighting Lim’s experience, Tolentino expressed confidence that the Karate Pilipinas chief is well-equipped to oversee the country’s campaign in Japan.

     

    “Ricky Lim is already familiar with the job after serving as the Chef de Mission to the Harbin Asian Winter Games in China last February 2025 and as deputy Chef de Mission to the Bahrain Asian Youth Games last year,” he added.

     

    To help manage the country’s sizable delegation, Lim will be supported by an experienced team of deputy chiefs of mission. The group includes Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas Executive Director Erika Dy, Philippine Judo Federation official Alexander Sulit, Curling Pilipinas representative Jarryd Bello, and Vovinam Philippines’ Jop Malonzo.

     

    Together, they will oversee the logistical, administrative, and operational needs of Team Philippines throughout the continental competition while ensuring athletes receive the necessary support both on and off the field of play.

     

    The Philippines is expected to send a 430-member athlete delegation to Aichi-Nagoya, making it one of the country’s largest contingents in recent editions of the Asian Games. The national team will compete in 40 of the 43 sports featured in the continental showpiece, reflecting the continued growth and development of Philippine sports across multiple disciplines.

     

    Leading the delegation is Olympic double gold medalist Carlos Yulo, who remains one of the country’s brightest medal hopes after cementing his place among the world’s elite gymnasts. Yulo is expected to spearhead a talented roster that includes established champions and rising stars aiming to deliver strong performances against Asia’s best athletes.

    The achievements of Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo continue to inspire the next generation of Filipino weightlifters, and one athlete carrying that inspiration is her niece, Alexsandra Ann Diaz. 

     

    The 15-year-old lifter carved out her own place in the sport after delivering a historic performance at the 2026 IWF World Youth Weightlifting Championships in Cali, Colombia, where she swept three gold medals and shattered two youth world records in the women’s 48kg category.

     

    Rather than feeling pressure from being the niece of Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, Alexsandra sees her tita’s achievements as a source of motivation as she builds her own identity in weightlifting.

     

    “Mas motivation po (sa akin). Kasi tita ko po (si Hidilyn) gusto ko po maging parehas niya,” the younger Diaz said.

     

    The Zamboanga City native dominated the competition by topping the snatch, clean and jerk, and total categories on Monday, establishing herself as one of the biggest performers of the tournament.

     

    Diaz lifted 98kg in the clean and jerk, setting a new youth world record, while her overall total of 175kg also surpassed the previous youth world mark of 173kg. Her performance earned her a third gold medal and completed a clean sweep of the division.

    She came close to rewriting another record as well, finishing just one kilogram short of breaking the snatch mark.

    The Philippines found its way to the podium through teamwork and precision as the men’s duilian squad produced the country’s only medal at the 4th IWUF Taolu World Cup in Haikou, China.


    The Quezon City-based trio of Sandrex Gainsan, Mark Lester Ragay, and Mark Anthony Polo delivered a synchronized performance at the Haikou Wuyuanhe Stadium on Wednesday, July 8, scoring 9.630 points to capture the bronze medal in a highly competitive international field.

     

    Facing elite representatives from nearly 30 countries, the Filipino athletes showcased the timing, discipline, and coordination required in the demanding duilian event, where teamwork and technical execution determine success.

     

    Their podium finish placed the Philippines alongside wushu powerhouses Iran and Indonesia, who claimed the gold and silver medals with scores of 9.666 and 9.660, respectively.

     

    The Wushu Federation-Philippines praised the trio for their achievement and highlighted the qualities that carried them to the medal round.

     

    “These gentlemen continue to make their city and the nation proud. Their choreography, synchronization, and teamwork earned the country a podium finish against the world’s elite taolu athletes. Great work, Team Pilipinas!” Wushu Federation-Philippines stated on its social media post.

     

    While the men’s duilian team provided the Philippines’ medal highlight, some of the country’s biggest names narrowly missed the podium.

    Top national wushu athlete Agatha Wong finished sixth in the women’s Taijiquan event after recording 9.716 points, while Jones Llabres Inso placed seventh in the men’s competition.

    The Haikou tournament featured more than 200 athletes from 29 countries and regions, all competing across 22 events during the two-day competition.

     

    Organized by the International Wushu Federation, the Taolu World Cup is considered one of the sport’s most prestigious competitions outside the World Wushu Championships. 

     

    Qualification was limited to athletes who finished inside the top eight of their respective events at the previous World Wushu Championships, ensuring a field packed with the world’s best performers.

     

    The competition tested athletes across four major disciplines: fist routines, long weapons, short weapons, and duilian, with 11 men’s events and 11 women’s events producing a total of 22 gold medals.

     

    The Philippines’ bronze medal also comes at a significant time for the sport, with wushu preparing for a historic milestone later this year. The martial art will make its debut as an official medal sport at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, marking its first inclusion in the Olympic sports program.

    The Philippines’ roster for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games continues to take shape, with swimming adding two more promising names to the country’s growing delegation bound for Dakar, Senegal.


    Philippine Aquatics Inc. Executive Director Anthony Reyes confirmed that Palarong Pambansa standouts Jamesray Ajido and Riannah Chantelle Coleman have officially qualified for the quadrennial meet, scheduled from October 31 to November 13.

     

    Their inclusion raises the Philippine contingent to six qualified athletes as the country prepares to compete in the world’s premier multi-sport event for young athletes.

     

    Ajido, 17, earned his place in the boys’ 100-meter butterfly, while 16-year-old Coleman secured a berth in the girls’ 100-meter breaststroke.

     

    Both swimmers have steadily built impressive resumes at the grassroots and international levels.

    Ajido first emerged as one of the country’s brightest young talents after winning a gold medal when the Philippines hosted the 11th Asian Age Group Swimming Championships in 2023. 

     

    He followed that performance with a silver medal in the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain last year, further strengthening his credentials on the international stage.

    Coleman, meanwhile, continues to dominate local competition. Her nomination came after she successfully preserved her Palarong Pambansa records in the girls’ 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke during this year’s national school games in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.

     

    With the addition of the two swimmers, the Philippines now has six athletes qualified for Dakar 2026. 

     

    Joining Ajido and Coleman are athletics standouts Pi Durden Wangkay and Naomi Marjori Cesar, cyclist Maritanya Krog, and wushu taolu athlete Angel Polo.

     

    The Philippine Olympic Committee had earlier announced plans to send a nine-athlete delegation to Senegal. 

     

    According to the POC, the country is also expected to receive universality slots in gymnastics and windsurfing, completing its projected allocation for the Games.

     

    Dakar 2026 will be a historic edition of the Youth Olympic Games as it marks the first Olympic event ever to be staged on the African continent. Around 2,700 young athletes from 206 delegations are expected to compete across three host sites—Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly.

     

    Swimming competitions are scheduled from November 1 to 6, 2026, with athletes required to meet World Aquatics’ age eligibility standards and have appeared in the organization’s world rankings during the qualification period.

     

    The Youth Olympic Games have become an important stepping stone for future Olympians, giving emerging athletes an opportunity to compete against the world’s best in their age group while gaining valuable international experience ahead of the senior Olympic cycle.
