    PSC, NCFP launch grassroots chess program to develop future Filipino Grandmasters

    The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) are joining forces to strengthen the country’s grassroots chess development and create a clearer pathway for young talents aspiring to become future Grandmasters.

     

    The two organizations have partnered to establish the Batang Pinoy Chess Henyo Grassroots Program, a long-term development initiative designed to identify, support, and train some of the Philippines’ most promising young chess players. The program aims to provide these rising talents with structured coaching, competitive exposure, and the necessary foundation to eventually represent the country at the highest levels of international chess.

     

    NCFP chief executive officer Jayson Gonzales confirmed that the program will officially begin on August 1 and will feature 36 young chess standouts from across the country. The participants—12 each from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao—earned their places through regional qualifiers and will now undergo a comprehensive training program focused on improving their skills and preparing them for future international competitions.

    The initiative represents a major step in Philippine chess development, as it seeks to build a stronger pipeline of young players who can carry the country’s flag in future national and global tournaments.

     

    “It marks a historic milestone in Philippine grassroots chess development that would lay the foundation for the country’s future national athletes,” Gonzales said.

     

    The launch of the program comes after discussions involving key officials from both organizations. PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio, NCFP president Butch Pichay, and Gonzales recently met with PSC commissioner Ed Hayco to finalize the implementation details and ensure the successful rollout of the project.

    For Gonzales, who is also a Grandmaster and serves as the coach of the national women’s chess team, the program represents an important investment in the future of Philippine chess. He believes that providing young players with proper guidance and development opportunities at an early age will help them maximize their potential and eventually compete on the international stage.

     

    The Batang Pinoy Chess Henyo Grassroots Program will feature young players from the boys and girls categories in the 5-8 and 9-11 age brackets, giving them access to a structured system aimed at developing both their technical abilities and competitive mindset.

     

    From Luzon, the selected young chess talents are Aaliyan Borden, Alyiah Beltran, Hahn Tee, Gael Navarro, Mark Albert, Orion Paredes, Sofia Saludares, Althea Paredes, Kate Garcia, Marius Constante, Neil Amatorio, and Clyde Torena.

     

    Representing the Visayas region are Frexine Lim, Elisa Johansson, Frida Bernal, Ivan Icalina, Terrence Donoga, Rybarage Entia, Rhian Salud, Lyrah Villareal, Ellysa Maru, Lance Bangero, Allen Albor, and Navi Icalina.

     

    Meanwhile, the Mindanao delegation is composed of Sabella Sy, Elisha Romarate, Eu Pepito, Magnus Carlsen Sanico, Carlsen Andres Hapitan, Yoseff Prada, Roshan Templa, Scarlett Donoso, Claudiah Fabrigia, Danny Romualdez, Aidh Munsing, and Levon Reyes.

     

    With participants coming from different regions of the country, the program also aims to promote wider access to chess development opportunities and ensure that promising players outside major urban centers receive the same level of support and training.

     

    The PSC and NCFP hope that the initiative will become a foundation for producing the next generation of Filipino chess stars, following in the footsteps of the country’s elite players who have competed successfully on the international stage.

     

    By investing in young talent at an early stage, officials believe the Batang Pinoy Chess Henyo Grassroots Program can help strengthen Philippine chess and increase the country’s chances of producing more Grandmasters in the years ahead.

    Praj Dela Cruz turns American Ninja Warrior appearance into inspiration for next climbing challenges

    For Praj Dela Cruz, her first appearance on American Ninja Warrior was not measured by how far she went on the course, but by the opportunity to carry the Philippine flag onto one of the world’s biggest obstacle stages.


    The 15-year-old climbing standout made her rookie appearance in the latest season of the sports entertainment reality show, where competitors from different backgrounds test their strength, speed, and endurance through challenging obstacle courses held across various cities.

     

    Dela Cruz showed promise early in her run, attacking the course with confidence before her journey ended at the Diamond Dash obstacle. 

     

    While the result was not what she had hoped for, the young athlete walked away with a bigger victory—representing the Philippines, the local climbing community, and her family on an international platform.

     

    “There have been a lot of climbers featured on ‘American Ninja Warrior.’ All of them have been successful. Some of them I know.     For the Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist, simply earning a spot on the show was already a dream fulfilled.

     

    Having grown up participating in obstacle sports and climbing, Dela Cruz saw her American Ninja Warrior appearance as a milestone in a journey that started when she was still young.

     

    Her rapid rise in climbing has already produced historic achievements. At just 14 years old, Dela Cruz delivered the Philippines’ lone medal when sports climbing returned to the regional meet after a 14-year absence, earning a bronze medal at the Southeast Asian Games.

     

    The three-time national boulder champion is not satisfied with simply making an appearance, however. She is already looking ahead to another chance on the show, hoping to return stronger and better prepared.

     

    “I’m trying to apply again. Hopefully they’ll take me back. I’ll see how I do and maybe I can improve my skills and hopefully I can do better in that competition,” she said.

     

    Beyond her own goals, Dela Cruz hopes her international appearances can help grow the sport in the Philippines and encourage more young athletes to pursue climbing.

     

    Her latest return to the country gave her another chance to showcase her progress, as she competed in the lead and bouldering events of the 2026 PCI National Championship. She left the competition with two gold medals in the women’s elite lead and bouldering categories.

     

    With those victories behind her, Dela Cruz is now shifting her focus toward another major challenge—the World Climbing Youth Championship, scheduled from July 18 to 25.

    Fresh off a record-breaking opening day, the Filipino weightlifting team once again found itself on the podium as Peralta collected two silver medals in the women’s 53-kilogram event, while Alas-as chipped in another runner-up finish in the men’s 60-kilogram division.

     

    Peralta opened her campaign with an 85-kilogram lift in the snatch to secure the silver medal before finishing with a total lift of 188 kilograms to claim another silver in the overall standings.

     

     the Asian Youth Games medalist was on course for a third medal but fell just short in the clean and jerk competition. Her successful 103-kilogram second attempt was enough for fourth place, leaving her just outside the podium in the discipline.

    Gregorio unveiled the proposal during his commencement address to the graduating class of the UP College of Human Kinetics at the Varsity Training Center, where he challenged one of the country’s premier academic institutions to take the lead in transforming sports into a powerful platform for education, innovation, economic growth, and nation-building.

     

    Addressing the graduates, Gregorio shared what he described as a long-term dream not only for the University of the Philippines but for the entire Philippine sports landscape.

    “My dream for Philippine sports is to build a proud nation. To this end, my dream for UP is to build a Sports University. Through a dedicated Sports University, he believes the Philippines can create a sustainable pipeline of professionals capable of strengthening every level of the country’s sporting structure—from grassroots development to elite competition.

     

    To underscore the feasibility of his proposal, Gregorio pointed to several countries that have long invested in specialized sports universities as integral components of their national sports programs.

     

    Among the institutions he cited were Germany’s Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln (German Sport University Cologne), China’s Beijing Sport University, Russia’s Lesgaft National State University of Physical Education, Sport and Health, and Japan’s Nippon Sport Science University (NSSU). These universities have become globally recognized centers for sports science, coaching education, athletic performance, research, and sports management, producing generations of Olympians, coaches, and industry leaders.

    Closer to home, Gregorio also noted that neighboring Southeast Asian countries have already embraced similar models. Thailand operates the Thailand National Sports University (TNSU), while Vietnam has established the Vietnam National University of Physical Education and Sports (VNUPES), both serving as national hubs for athlete development and sports education.

     

    By highlighting these examples, Gregorio stressed that the Philippines has an opportunity to join a growing list of nations that recognize sports as a strategic investment rather than merely a recreational pursuit.

     

    According to the PSC chairman, the proposed Sports University would generate benefits that extend far beyond the playing field. It would strengthen athlete development programs, professionalize coaching and sports education, promote research in sports science and medicine, encourage innovation in sports technology, and create new career opportunities within the rapidly growing sports industry.

     

    Gregorio also believes that the institution could serve as a catalyst for economic activity by supporting sports entrepreneurship, facility management, event organization, sports tourism, and related industries, ultimately positioning sports as a significant contributor to national development.

     

    Beyond medals and championships, he emphasized the role of sports in shaping national identity, inspiring the youth, and building stronger communities.

     

    Closing his message to the graduates, Gregorio challenged them to use their education to make a lasting impact on Philippine society, reminding them that their responsibility extends well beyond the classroom.

     

    “Gawin mong masaya ang atleta, magtatagumpay ang mga Pilipino. Your diploma is not the finish line. It is your starting block. Go where you are needed. Build athletes. Build communities. Build industries. Para sa kabataan at para sa bayan,” he added.

     

    The proposal comes at a time when the Philippines continues to seek ways to build on recent international sporting successes and strengthen its long-term sports development program.

    Competing in the newly introduced women’s 48-kilogram division, Diaz swept all three gold medals while rewriting the record books, giving the Philippine team an early boost in the prestigious international tournament.

     

    The Zamboanga City standout, who is the niece of Olympic champion Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, successfully embraced the challenge of moving up in weight after previously competing in the lighter division. Her dominance was evident from start to finish as she posted lifts of 77 kilograms in the snatch, 98 kilograms in the clean and jerk, and 175 kilograms in total.

     

    Those marks earned her gold medals in all three events while also establishing new world youth records in the clean and jerk and total lift. Diaz surpassed the previous world standards of 97 kilograms in the clean and jerk and 173 kilograms in total for the new 48kg weight class.

     

    She came within touching distance of completing a sweep of all three world records, missing the snatch standard by just one kilogram after finishing with 77 kilograms.

    The performance continues an impressive rise for Diaz, who captured the girls’ 45kg title at the 2025 World Youth Championships in Lima, Peru.     Romania’s Adelina Lorint finished second in the women’s 48kg competition after recording 74 kilograms in the snatch, 90 kilograms in the clean and jerk, and 164 kilograms in total. Venezuela’s Valeria Osorio del Valle completed the podium with a 162-kilogram total to claim bronze.

     

    The Philippines’ medal haul continued through Jay-R Colonia, who added another gold medal for the country in the men’s 56kg clean and jerk after successfully lifting 140 kilograms.

     

    Colonia also secured two silver medals by registering 109 kilograms in the snatch and a 249-kilogram total, capping another strong international showing after winning bronze at the Bahrain Asian Youth Games.

     

    Althea Bacaro likewise contributed to the Philippine campaign in the women’s 44kg division. She earned a silver medal in the clean and jerk with an 80-kilogram lift and took bronze in the total with 140 kilograms, built on a 60-kilogram snatch effort.
