    EJ Obiena captures back-to-back golds in Germany

    EJ Obiena marked his second consecutive title in Germany and his seventh gold medal of the 2026 season as he cleared  5.83 meters on his first attempt to claim the gold medal at the 30th International Pole Vault Meeting in Jockgrim, Germany on Wednesday.


    Despite battling through a difficult warm-up and an uneven start to the competition, the Filipino pole vaulter Obiena found his rhythm when it mattered most, wherein he further strengthened his momentum as he continue his European campaign.

     

    Obiena needed just one attempt to clear the winning height of 5.83m, finishing ahead of Qatar’s Seifeldin Abdelsalam, who also managed 5.83m but required more attempts. Türkiye’s Ersu Şaşma settled for third after clearing 5.77m.

     

    All three medalists raised the bar to 5.93 meters in search of a higher finish, but none were able to clear the height after three attempts.

     

    Following the competition, the two-time Olympian admitted the victory was anything but comfortable.

     

    “5.83m for the in front of a packed J-Town!!! Was far from smooth competition and some struggles during warm up and earlier bars but happy to scrape an 80 bar. We continue to work and now a few trainings in before we go again,” Obiena wrote on his social media.

    The triumph came only days after Obiena ruled the Internationales Stabhochsprungmeeting in Halberstadt on July 31 with a winning clearance of 5.76 meters, giving him consecutive victories in Germany and extending an already productive season.

     

    His 2026 campaign began with a gold medal at the International Springer-Meeting in Cottbus before adding another title at the ISTAF Indoor Berlin in March. 

     

    The latest win further reinforces his consistency as one of the world’s top pole vaulters.

    The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is intensifying its efforts to decentralize sports development across the country, with Ormoc City emerging as one of its key destinations for future national and international sporting competitions.

     

    Backed by significant investments in world-class sports infrastructure, Ormoc is positioning itself as a rising sports hub in Eastern Visayas. The city’s rapid transformation has caught the attention of the PSC, which is now exploring opportunities to bring major sporting events to the area, including the prestigious 2027 Batang Pinoy National Championships.

     

    PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio confirmed the commission’s interest during the Eastern Visayas Sports and Youth Summit, citing Ormoc’s expanding sports facilities and its commitment to athlete development as key factors in its growing appeal as a host city.

    “We have many sports events lined up, and we hope to bring one to Ormoc in the future,” Gregorio said.

     

    “For Batang Pinoy, we will provide funding to ensure successful hosting. You will notice that 80 percent of our best athletes in our national teams are from the provinces. Our goal is to bring opportunities to them instead of requiring athletes to train in Manila.”

     

    Gregorio’s remarks underscore the PSC’s broader vision of strengthening grassroots sports by making high-level competitions and training opportunities more accessible to athletes outside the National Capital Region. Rather than concentrating resources in Metro Manila, the commission aims to empower provincial athletes by developing regional centers capable of hosting elite competitions.

     

    That vision aligns closely with Ormoc City’s long-term sports development strategy.

    The Eastern Visayas Sports and Youth Summit, currently being held in the city, serves as a platform to showcase Ormoc’s growing capabilities while encouraging collaboration among local government units, sports officials, coaches, and youth leaders. The summit also highlights the city’s ambition to become the premier sporting destination in Eastern Visayas.

     

    Representative Richard Gomez emphasized that sustained investment in sports infrastructure is central to achieving that goal.

    “We want Ormoc to be the sports epicenter of the region through proper infrastructure,” Gomez said.

     

    “We hope that through this development, we will be able to strengthen the region’s sports program over the next five or six years. We are here to share everything because we want other towns to step up. We are not sending out athletes without proper training and support.”

     

    Among the flagship projects is a PHP100-million track-and-field facility inside the new Ormoc City Sports Complex, which is expected to be completed by late next year. Once operational, the venue is expected to meet the standards required to host major national competitions while also serving as a high-performance training center for athletes from Eastern Visayas and neighboring regions.

     

    The track-and-field facility forms part of a much larger sports infrastructure program that has transformed the city over the past several years.

     

    Since 2022, the national and local governments have invested approximately PHP2 billion in the development of the Ormoc City Sports Complex. The sprawling complex now features a badminton center, padel courts, a skateboard park, and a convention center, creating a multi-sport destination capable of accommodating athletes across various disciplines.

     

    The investments reflect a growing recognition that quality facilities are essential to developing future champions while also attracting sporting events that can generate tourism, economic activity, and community engagement.

     

    Ormoc Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez also reaffirmed the city’s commitment to pursuing its ambitious vision, emphasizing that progress begins with taking decisive action rather than waiting for perfect conditions.

     

    “There is no perfect time. We only have now,” the mayor said.

     

    “If the dream is so big, you will always think you have to get everything right first before you begin.”

     

    With continued support from the PSC, national government agencies, and local stakeholders, Ormoc appears well on its way to becoming one of the country’s leading sports destinations. Should the city secure the hosting rights for the 2027 Batang Pinoy National Championships, it would represent another significant milestone in its transformation into a regional center for sports excellence and grassroots athlete development.

    Leading the charge was Estie Gay Liwanen, who delivered a standout performance to capture the gold medal in the women’s Master 2 -70kg division, highlighting the country’s continued strength in the masters ranks.

     

    Adding to the Philippine campaign was former world champion and national team head coach John Baylon, who proved he can still compete with the world’s best after earning the bronze medal in the men’s Master 4 -77kg category.

    Mango Prince David Tarro eyes breakthrough medal at Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships

    The Philippines is set to field a 13-athlete squad at the 2026 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from August 7 to 14, with the country’s rising stars aiming to make their mark against the continent’s best young lifters.


    Headlining the Philippine contingent is Albert Delos Santos of Zamboanga City, who enters the competition riding a wave of confidence after a historic campaign at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Junior Championships in Ismailia, Egypt, in May. Delos Santos captured the men’s 71-kilogram title and set a new junior world record in the clean and jerk, cementing his status as one of Asia’s brightest weightlifting prospects.


    Joining him is fellow Zamboangueño Mango Prince David Tarro, who is determined to turn years of steady progress into a podium finish in what will be his final appearance at the Asian Youth and Junior Championships.

    Competing in the men’s 65kg division, Tarro has steadily climbed the international ranks but has narrowly missed out on a medal in recent major competitions. He placed ninth at this year’s IWF World Junior Championships and finished seventh at the 2025 Asian Junior Weightlifting Championships.


    Now 19 years old, Tarro believes the upcoming tournament presents the perfect opportunity to break through.


    “Gusto ko kasi manalo talaga this year kasi gusto ko bumawi. Last year kasi 7th place lang ako sa category ko, then now gusto ko magka-medal talaga. Medyo kinakabahan ako sa training pero pursigido ako kasi last year ko na din ito para sa Junior Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships,” Tarro said during a media interaction.


    Unlike previous campaigns, Tarro feels far more prepared heading into this year’s continental meet. He credited coaches Diwa Delos Santos and Julius Naranjo, as well as Olympic champion Hidilyn Diaz, for helping him maximize his potential through improved training and technical refinement.


    “This time kasi nung nag-compete ako wala din ako sa condition, kulang sa preparation ‘yung katawan ko at ‘yung training ko kaya hindi rin maganda ‘yung naging resulta ng competition ko. Then this year, sa tulong nila coach Julius, coach Diwa, at ate Haidie, tinutulungan nila akong mas mag-improve at mailabas ang potential ko para sa laro,” he explained.


    Tarro also believes his experience at the World Junior Championships in Egypt provided valuable lessons that have strengthened both his confidence and determination.


    Facing many of the world’s top young lifters showed him the level required to compete for medals, while also proving that he has the ability to challenge the best with the right preparation.


    “Magandang experience din ‘yun kasi Worlds kasi ‘yun. Mas maraming kalaban at mas marami akong nakilalang malalakas na atleta sa category ko. Isa din ‘yun sa nag-motivate sa akin na kaya ko palang mag-medal, kahit may kulang pa. Kaya nitong Asian Championships gusto ko pang mas galingan para maipakita na kaya ko talaga,” he said.


    Tarro takes immense pride in representing Zamboanga City, a community that has become synonymous with Philippine weightlifting after producing Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz. Inspired by the achievements of Diaz and fellow Zamboangueño Olympian Nestor Colonia, the young lifter hopes to continue the city’s rich tradition of producing elite weightlifters.


    “Gusto ko hindi lang basta sabihin na Zamboangueño ako. Gusto kong ipakita na bilang Zamboangueño, kaya kong mag-medal kasama ng mga teammate kong taga-Zamboanga,” Tarro said.


    Like many aspiring athletes, Tarro dreams of one day competing on the Olympic stage. He credits Diaz not only as an inspiration but also as a mentor who has helped shape both his mindset and technical development.


    “Basic naman ‘yun para sa isang atleta, ang maging Olympian. Idol ko kasi si kuya Nestor Colonia. Ako, gusto ko ding maging Olympian at magka-medal sa world stage. Si ate Haidie naman ang naging mentor ko. Tinuturuan niya ako kung paano i-set ang mindset ko at kung paano pagandahin ang technique ko. Kapag may mali ako, kino-correct niya ako. Natutuwa ako na nandiyan siya para i-guide ako sa training at paghahanda ko para sa competition,” he concluded.


    With a talented squad led by world champion Albert Delos Santos and an ambitious group of emerging lifters eager to prove themselves, the Philippines will be aiming for another strong showing in Tashkent as the next generation of Filipino weightlifters continues its rise on the international stage.

    Although the Filipinas narrowly missed out on a top-nine finish, their performance throughout the tournament marked another significant milestone for Philippine lacrosse, as they held their own against some of the sport’s established nations on the world stage.

     

    The classification match against Argentina proved to be one of the most exciting contests of the championship. Team Philippines came out firing, racing to an early 4-1 advantage behind an aggressive attacking display and disciplined defensive effort.

    “With close matches against the host country Japan and the overtime loss to Argentina, we have just tapped into what this team can accomplish. Our young ones played fearlessly and our veterans showed leadership in difficult moments. We want to thank World Lacrosse and the Japan Lacrosse Association for all their hard work and support. It was an incredible experience, and Tokyo has our hearts,” Nee said.

     

    The coach emphasized that while the results may not have fully reflected the team’s potential, the tournament laid a strong foundation for the continued growth of lacrosse in the Philippines.

     

    The championship also offered the Filipino players an opportunity to gain invaluable experience competing against elite international opposition—experience that is expected to benefit the program as it continues its long-term development.

     

    At the top of the tournament, the United States once again showcased its dominance in the sport, defeating longtime rival Canada, 16-4, in the gold medal match to capture its fifth consecutive World Lacrosse Women’s Championship title and 10th overall. Canada settled for the silver medal, while Israel secured the bronze after another impressive campaign.

     

    For Team Philippines, attention now shifts to its next major international assignment. Nee and his squad will return to action at the 2026 Asia-Pacific Sixes Lacrosse Championships, scheduled from October 5 to 10 in Queensland, Australia.

     

    Armed with the confidence gained from their World Championship debut and a young core that continues to improve, the Filipinas will look to build on their encouraging performance in Tokyo as they continue establishing themselves among the rising programs in international lacrosse.

    Alex Eala made sure history would not repeat itself.

     

    Just days after capturing the biggest title of her career in Washington, the Filipina sensation returned to the court with another statement victory, avenging one of her toughest defeats earlier this season by beating Alycia Parks, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, to reach the Round of 32 of the 2026 Canadian Open.

     

    The victory was more than just another win for the newly crowned WTA 500 champion. It erased the memory of Eala’s opening-round exit at the Australian Open in January, where Parks rallied from a set down to eliminate the Filipina in three sets.

     

    This time, Eala flipped the script.

     

    The world No. 20 wasted little time asserting herself, racing through the opening set, 6-1, in a near mirror image of their Melbourne meeting, where she also dominated the first frame. Parks,

     however, responded the same way she did seven months ago, taking the second set, 6-4, to force a deciding third.

     

    But unlike their first encounter, Eala refused to let the momentum slip away.

     

    The 21-year-old stayed composed in a tightly contested final set before delivering the decisive breakthrough in the fifth game, breaking Parks to love after forcing the American into consecutive forehand errors.

     

    From there, Eala never looked back.

     

    She controlled the closing stages with confident baseline play and served out the match to love, completing the victory in one hour and 51 minutes to book her place in the next round.

     

    The win extends Eala’s remarkable stretch after her historic triumph at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, where she defeated Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, defending champion Leylah Fernandez, world No. 10 Elina Svitolina, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, and world No. 3 Jessica Pegula to capture her maiden WTA Tour title.

    Alex Eala barely had time to celebrate the biggest triumph of her career before another challenge arrived.

     

    Just days after making history by capturing her maiden WTA Tour title in Washington, the Filipina sensation is back on court looking to prove her breakthrough was only the beginning.

     

    Eala opens her National Bank Open campaign on Thursday at 8:10 a.m. (Manila time) against American Alycia Parks, a familiar opponent who handed her one of the toughest defeats of her season.

     

    The meeting carries added significance for the Filipina, who fell to Parks 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 in the opening round of the 2026 Australian Open. Seven months later, Eala enters the rematch as a completely different player.

     

    The 21-year-old arrives in Toronto playing the best tennis of her career after a remarkable stretch that has transformed her into one of the hottest names on the WTA Tour.

     

    Her rise began with a breakthrough campaign at Wimbledon, where she reached the quarterfinals to become the first Filipina to make the last eight of a Grand Slam singles event.

     

    She followed that with an even bigger milestone in Washington, where she captured her first WTA 500 title and climbed to a career-high World No. 20.

     

    Eala’s championship run was anything but easy.

     

    She rallied past Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the opening round before eliminating defending champion Leylah Fernandez, second seed Elina Svitolina, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, and finally World No. 3 Jessica Pegula, whom she defeated 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 to lift the trophy.

    Her dominant week in the American capital has also established her as one of the tour’s most dangerous players, particularly on hard courts.

     

    Now seeded 25th, Eala received a first-round bye in Toronto and begins her campaign directly in the Round of 64.

     

    Standing in her way is Parks, who advanced after defeating qualifier Victoria Kasintseva, 6-4, 6-4, in the opening round.

     

    Should Eala exact revenge and advance, she will face either Wimbledon champion Linda Nosková or American Caty McNally in the next round.

     

    The Canadian Open also offers Eala an opportunity to improve on last year’s result. In 2025, she exited in the opening round after a three-set loss to former Wimbledon champion Markéta Vondroušová.

     

    This time, however, Eala returns with a different mindset, a higher ranking, and a WTA title already in her trophy cabinet—turning what was once a learning experience into another chance to prove she belongs among the world’s elite.

    Her historic triumph immediately drew recognition from Philippine lawmakers, with several senators filing resolutions honoring Eala for bringing pride and inspiration to the country through her achievements in international tennis.

     

    Senators Bam Aquino, JV Ejercito, Mark Villar, and Erwin Tulfo each filed separate resolutions celebrating Eala’s breakthrough. Villanueva filed Senate Resolution No. 554, while Ejercito, Aquino, Villar, and Tulfo filed Senate Resolutions Nos. 562, 560, 564, and 565, respectively, in recognition of her accomplishment.

     

    Ejercito praised Eala’s success as a defining moment for Philippine tennis, highlighting the impact of her victory beyond the sport itself.

     

    “For the first time, the Philippines became known in the world of tennis because of the skill, determination, and sportsmanship of Alex Eala,” Ejercito said in a statement.

    “She has brought immense honor to our country and made every one of us proud. She is proof that Filipino heart and talent can stand toe-to-toe with the best in the world.”

     

    The senator also emphasized the importance of using Eala’s achievement as motivation to further improve sports development programs in the country.

     

    “The success of Alex Eala shows what Filipino talent can achieve when it is nurtured and supported,” Ejercito added. “Her victory should inspire us to improve our sports development programs and expand opportunities for young Filipino athletes to train, compete, and excel on the world stage.”

     

    Villar echoed the sentiment, saying Eala’s accomplishments have inspired a new generation of Filipino athletes to dream bigger and believe they can compete internationally.

     

    “Vamos, Alex! Your victory is proof that Filipino athletes are truly world-class,” Villar said.

    Philippine Blu Girls set sights on elusive Asian Games podium finish 

    Years of near misses have only fueled the Philippine Blu Girls’ determination to finally break through on the Asian Games stage.

     

    Fresh from a fifth-place finish at the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup in Lima, Peru, the Philippine women’s national softball team is setting its sights on a podium finish at the 12th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

     

    The Blu Girls have reached the semifinals in three different editions of the Asian Games but have yet to convert those appearances into a medal. 

     

    After a heartbreaking campaign in Hangzhou, the team believes its latest international experience has prepared it for another shot at history.

     

    Leading that mission is team captain Charlotte Sales, who joined co-captain Royevel Palma and assistant coach Rizza Bernardino at the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum held at the Philippine Sports Commission on Tuesday to discuss the team’s preparations and expectations for the continental meet.

     

    “This Asian Games pinapangako namin sa mga sarili namin na yung iyak namin happy tears naman this time,” Sales said.

     

    The disappointment of the previous Asian Games remains a strong source of motivation for the squad after falling in the bronze medal match in Hangzhou.

     

    “Yung huli (2023 Hangzhou) heartbroken pa rin kaming lahat kasi natalo pa rin kami sa bronze medal match,” she said.

    That painful finish has strengthened the Blu Girls’ resolve as they prepare for another medal bid, this time carrying the confidence gained from their recent World Cup campaign.

     

    The Filipinas placed fifth at the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup in Peru, a result that reflected the progress made by the team following an extensive training camp in Japan.

     

    “Naging maganda yung training camp kasi ang daming nag-improve (sa team). Maraming tinuro sa amin yung Japan team. Hindi sila madamot magbigay ng skills and anything na makakatulong sa amin,” Bernardino said.

     

    The Blu Girls are currently training at the Polo Club before departing for another training camp in Japan on August 21. From there, they will head directly to Nagoya for the Asian Games.

     

    Head coach Ana Santiago will lead a roster made up of 12 local players and five Filipino-Americans, a lineup Bernardino believes has earned its place through consistent performances on the international stage.

     

    “Nagbi-base po talaga kami sa performance nila and sa world cup where lahat po sila ay nag-perform. So, alam po namin na best of the best na po ‘yong na-pick namin,” Bernardino said.

     

    The road to a medal, however, will not come easy. Awaiting the Blu Girls are perennial powerhouse Japan, which is chasing a seventh straight Asian Games title, along with regional contenders China and Chinese Taipei.

     

    Still, after years of falling just short, the Blu Girls are embracing another opportunity to rewrite their Asian Games story.
