    Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena’s return to top form continues to gain momentum. Just weeks after posting his season-best clearance and collecting consecutive podium finishes, Obiena once again found himself standing atop the podium after claiming the gold medal at the Halberstadter Hohenflug – 1. Internationales Stabhochsprung-Meeting auf dem Domplatz in Halberstadt, Germany.


    Obiena worked his way through the competition, clearing 5.56 meters on his opening attempt before easily getting over 5.66 meters to keep himself in command of the field.

     

    As the bar rose higher, the battle for the title was trimmed to only two athletes—Obiena and Qatar’s Abdelsalam Seifeldin. 

     

    While Seifeldin needed three attempts to clear 5.66 meters, the Filipino Olympian remained composed before soaring over 5.76 meters to seize complete control of the competition.

     

    Seifeldin failed to clear 5.76 meters in all three of his attempts, officially handing the gold medal to the 30-year-old World No. 14.

     

    With the victory already secured, Obiena raised the bar to 5.90 meters in pursuit of an even bigger statement. Although he came up short in all three attempts, his winning clearance was enough to top the 10-man field and collect another international title.

    The latest triumph marked Obiena’s sixth gold medal of his 2026 campaign. His win adds to his victories at the Czeslaw Cybulski Memorial in Poland on June 30 and the Raiffeisen Austrian Open in Austria on July 2.

     

    Meanwhile, Qatar’s Seifeldin settled for the silver medal after clearing 5.66 meters, while American Cole Walsh completed the podium with a third-place finish after clearing 5.56 meters.

     

    The result further reinforces the momentum Obiena has built over the past several weeks. Before competing in Halberstadt, the Filipino standout produced a season-best 5.85-meter clearance in Madrid. 

     

    He earns another silver medal while extending a streak of three consecutive competitions clearing at least 5.80 meters—a sign that he is steadily regaining the form that once made him one of the world’s elite pole vaulters.

     

    Obiena’s busy European schedule is far from over. He is set to remain in Germany for the Internationale Stabhochsprungmeeting in Jockgrim, another meet that has historically attracted world-class pole vaulters and serves as a valuable stop before major international championships.

     

    As the reigning Asian Games champion, Obiena is expected to defend his title at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya this September, with every competition on the European circuit serving as another opportunity to sharpen his form ahead of one of the biggest events on his calendar.

    Alex Eala has overcome world champions, Grand Slam winners, and Top 10 opponents this week. On Sunday, however, her biggest opponent wasn’t standing across the net.

     

    It was the weather.

     

    What was supposed to be the most important match of the 21-year-old Filipina’s career turned into a marathon waiting game after relentless rain repeatedly delayed and eventually suspended the WTA 500 Mubadala DC Open final against world No. 3 Jessica Pegula in Washington.

     

    Instead of battling for her first WTA Tour-level singles title, Eala found herself spending more time waiting than playing as the championship match stretched beyond eight hours from its originally scheduled start.

     

    The final, initially slated for 12 a.m. Philippine time, was first delayed by more than three hours before the players were finally able to step onto Center Court at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center.

     

    The stop-and-go conditions immediately tested both finalists.

     

    Pegula managed to claim the opening set, 6-4, but Eala quickly responded by grabbing a 2-1 lead in the second set, showing signs of another comeback after surviving several difficult matches throughout the week.

     

    Then the skies opened once more.

     

    After only 57 minutes of actual tennis, play was suspended again at around 4:30 a.m. Philippine time, forcing both players back inside while tournament staff scrambled to protect and dry the court.

She eliminated Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the opening round before exacting revenge on defending champion Leylah Fernandez in the second round. She then knocked off world No. 10 Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals before stunning four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka in straight sets to reach her maiden WTA Tour final.

     

    The impressive run came just weeks after Eala continued her rise on the biggest stages by becoming the first Filipina to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon, proving that her historic semifinal appearance at the Miami Open earlier this season was no fluke.

     

    Awaiting her, though, is another familiar obstacle.

     

    Pegula defeated Eala during their Miami Open semifinal meeting earlier this year and has once again shown why she remains one of the world’s elite players by taking the opening set before the latest weather interruption.

     

    As the hours passed, uncertainty became the theme of the day.

     

    By around 6:30 a.m. Philippine time, veteran sports journalist Dyan Castillejo shared on social media that the rain had begun to slow and fans were still hoping the final could resume.

     

     Tournament workers continued drying the court, although another shower again interrupted preparations.

     

    Tournament organizers later announced on X that play was expected to resume around 7 a.m. Philippine time (7 p.m. local time in Washington), but further delays followed.

     

    As of posting time, the championship match remained suspended.

     

    For now, Eala’s dream of lifting her first WTA Tour trophy remains unfinished—not because she was beaten, but because the weather refused to let the final reach its conclusion.

    Leading the charge was Villaflor, who continued to make the most of home-court advantage by booking a place in the men’s singles quarterfinals with a 21-18, 21-13 victory over Thailand’s Tanawat Yimjit.

     

    The 22-year-old weathered an early feeling-out period before gradually taking control of the match through his pace and shot selection. After edging a competitive opening game, Villaflor dominated the second set, turning a comfortable lead into a convincing finish to wrap up the Round of 16 contest in straight games.

     

    “Siguro po, una, adjustment talaga since bago ko pa lang siya nakalaban. ‘Yung una ko pong ginawa is pasok lang po muna ‘yung bola, tsaka basahin ko po ‘yung ginagawa niya. Kinuha ko muna ‘yung momentum na maka-rally, tapos sinabayan ko na rin po ng fast ball,” the world No. 122 said.

     

    Villaflor credited the energy inside the venue for helping him sustain his momentum in the country’s first-ever hosting of the Philippine International Challenge, which attracted players from 28 nations through the support of the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee.

     

    “Isa po ‘yun sa factor sa ‘kin, ‘yung suporta ng Pilipinas ngayon. Talagang grabe, naririnig ko po ‘yung sigawan, ‘yung palakpakan nila. Sobrang happy ako kasi halos lahat andito, lahat po sumusuporta,” Villaflor added.

    The Filipinos appeared headed for a comfortable opening-set victory after establishing an early lead, only for the Thai pair to storm back and steal the set. The World Championships-bound duo responded with greater composure, forcing a deciding set before completing the turnaround in just under 58 minutes.

     

    “Actually, nung first set nabigla rin kami kasi lamang kami eh, pero biglang nabaligtad ‘yung game; sila ‘yung unang nanalo. Kaya nung second set at third set iniba talaga namin ‘yung game play namin. Kailangan focused talaga kami, kailangang 100 percent na dapat ganito ‘yung tira namin, ‘yung gagawin namin,” Padiz shared.

     

    Villabrille and Padiz now face Malaysia’s Bryan Jeremy Goonting and Muhammad Haikal in the quarterfinals, with a semifinal berth and at least a podium finish on the line.

    Aside from its five gold medals, the Philippine team also celebrated podium finishes from Lucas Aguilar and Nathaniel Nama, who each captured silver medals after strong campaigns in the men’s 66kg and 63kg divisions, respectively.

     

    Meanwhile, Alo Turingan (73kg), Lucian Salud (76kg), and Joaquin Marte (66kg) contributed bronze medals to round out another productive showing for Team Philippines.

     

    The Philippines’ overall performance underscored the country’s continued progress in grappling, with both established competitors and emerging young talents making their presence felt on the international stage.     The Philippines is positioning itself as a rising destination for international pickleball after plans were unveiled to bring the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Asia circuit to the country for the first time.


    The country is set to host the PPA Asia 125 tournament in December 2026, followed by the PPA Asia 500, also known as the Manila Open, in January 2027, as pickleball continues to gain popularity among Filipino athletes and enthusiasts.

     

    The announcement came alongside the launch plans for a world-class pickleball facility at Bridgetowne in Pasig City, where Kosmas Athletic Ventures Corporation (KAVC) is preparing to build a venue capable of hosting major international competitions.

     

    Former Philippine Sports Commission chairman and current KAVC head of operations Dickie Bachmann said the PPA 125 event at Helios Beta will provide Filipino players with an opportunity to gain valuable ranking points and eventually compete at higher levels of the sport.

     

    The Helios Beta facility is scheduled for completion by October and will feature 14 courts, including a center court designed to accommodate up to 1,000 spectators. 

     

    The venue will host the PPA Asia 125 before becoming the stage for the PPA Asia 500 tournament the following January.

     

    The PPA Asia 125 serves as an entry-level platform in the PPA Tour Asia structure, giving developing players the chance to collect ranking points and work their way toward the 500 (Open), 1000 (Cup), and 1500 (Slam) levels.

    Beyond the initial tournaments, KAVC is also preparing a larger pickleball project with the planned opening of the Helios Pickleball Center in March 2028. 

     

    The facility is expected to feature 25 tournament-standard courts, highlighted by a championship center court with a 2,000-seat capacity.

     

    The project is being developed in partnership with Johns Design and Consulting (JDC), founded by renowned pickleball players Ben and Collin Johns. 

     

    Collin Johns is well-known 35-time PPA doubles champion, he believes that the Philippines has the potential to become one of Asia’s major pickleball destinations.

     

    “Pickleball is experiencing explosive growth globally, and the Philippines is poised to become a major hub for the sport in Asia. Our goal is to ensure facilities are built with precise technical standards—from court surfaces and lighting to player flow,” Johns said. 

     

    KAVC president Kim Lapus said the collaboration with JDC reflects the organization’s goal of creating international-standard facilities that can support both professional athletes and the growing local pickleball community.

     

    Preparations for the upcoming events have also gained support from Philippine sports officials. In June, Philippine Sports Commission chairman Patrick Gregorio met with Philippine Pickleball Federation president Shery Anne Cu, deputy secretary-general Atty. Roy Iba, Bachmann, Event Director Francisco Lapus, and Event and Partnership Lead Avvy Lapus to discuss plans for the country’s upcoming international hosting duties.

     

    With the arrival of PPA Asia events, the Philippines aims to transform its growing pickleball interest into a stronger competitive scene while giving local players a chance to experience world-class competition on home soil.

    Clarence Villaflor kept the Philippines in contention in the men’s singles competition after turning in a composed straight-sets victory over India’s Harsheel Dani, 21-16, 21-12, on Wednesday in the Philippine International Challenger at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City.


    The Philippine International Challenge is part of the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) International Challenge series, where players compete for crucial world ranking points and prize money. 

     

    Held from July 28 to August 2 at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong, the tournament features a strong international field with participants from over 28 countries, highlighting its status as one of the Philippines’ biggest badminton events.

     

    With several Filipino entries facing a tough field, Villaflor emerged as the country’s lone survivor in the men’s singles draw after needing just 32 minutes to dispatch Dani and secure a place in the Round of 16 of the tournament.

     

    The world No. 122 immediately imposed his pace from the opening exchanges, using his quickness around the court to offset Dani’s height advantage and take command of the first game.

     

    Dani attempted to stay within striking distance in the second game, but Villaflor consistently controlled the longer rallies and denied the Indian any momentum before closing out the match in convincing fashion.

    The Philippines also exited the women’s singles competition after Mika De Guzman and Christel Fuentespina suffered straight-set defeats against Thai opponents. 

     

    Sarunrak Vitidsarn defeated De Guzman, 21-11, 21-17, while top seed Tidaporn Kleebyeesun eliminated Fuentespina, 21-17, 21-13.

     

    In mixed doubles, however, the home team found another bright spot as Christian Bernardo and Lea Inlayo produced a dominant 21-10, 21-9 victory over New Zealand’s Dylan Soedjasa and Justine Villegas to advance to the Round of 16, giving the Philippines two remaining entries still in contention as the tournament progresses.
