    Jelo Albo showed why he remains one of the Philippines’ top badminton players, overcoming a determined challenge from Malaysia’s Samuel Lee to lead the country’s charge in the inaugural Philippine International Challenge presented by the Philippine Sports Commission.


    The reigning three-time national men’s singles champion booked his spot in the Round of 32 after grinding out a 21-18, 21-18 victory in the Round of 64 on Tuesday, July 28, at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City.

     

    The incoming fifth-year University of the Philippines standout wasted no time imposing his attacking style, using his trademark smashes to take control of the opening game. Despite Lee’s late push, Albo stayed composed to secure the first-set advantage.

     

    The Malaysian challenger made things more difficult in the second game, building an 11-9 lead at the interval and forcing Albo into longer rallies. But the Filipino adjusted by using his reach and court coverage to dictate the exchanges, eventually closing out the match in 49 minutes.

     

    “Sa totoo lang, happy pa rin ako kasi kahit papaano, naitawid ‘yung panalo. Masaya pa rin naman sa performance kahit mahirap siyang laruin,” said Albo.

     

    With momentum on his side, Albo will next face the winner between ninth-seeded India’s Siddhanth Gupta and the United States’ Rylan Tan as he continues his pursuit of a Round of 16 berth.

     

    While Albo advanced, the men’s singles bracket already produced major surprises, with two highly seeded players falling earlier than expected.

    Indonesia’s Muhamad Rizky Akbar delivered the biggest upset of the day, eliminating top seed and world No. 105 Dmitriy Panarin of Kazakhstan in dominant fashion. Akbar needed only 31 minutes to complete the victory, 21-15, 21-6.

    The Philippines also gained progress in the women’s singles competition as 17-year-old Christel Rei Fuentespina battled back from a first-game setback to defeat Malaysia’s Carine Tee, 19-21, 21-15, 21-7.

     

    Fuentespina joins four-time national champion Mika De Guzman in the Round of 32. The young Filipino will face top seed Tidaporn Kleebyeesun of Thailand, while De Guzman is set for another matchup against Thai opponent Sarunrak Vitidsran.

     

    The country also advanced in mixed doubles, with Christian Bernardo and Lea Inlayo securing a Round of 32 spot after defeating Malaysia’s Isyraf Hafizin and Lee Jonne, 21-12, 22-20. Julius Villabrille and Andrea Princess Hernandez also moved forward after sweeping Jan Mark Sotea and Patricia Barredo, 21-16, 21-9.

    Young Filipino jins chase international success as PH taekwondo team heads to Indonesia Open 

    Fresh from a breakthrough performance in South Korea, the Philippine taekwondo team is turning its attention to another international test with a bigger goal in mind: developing the next generation of Filipino fighters for the global stage.


    The Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) will send its up-and-coming athletes to the 2026 Asian Taekwondo Indonesia Open Championships scheduled from Aug. 1 to 5 in Jakarta, Indonesia.


    The tournament will feature 30 participating countries, including powerhouse nations such as Korea, Iran, Jordan, Chinese Taipei, China, Cambodia, and Iraq.


    PTA Grandmaster Sung-Chon Hong believes the members of the SMART/MVPSF Philippine taekwondo team are ready to take on the challenge after gaining valuable experience from recent international competitions.


    Hong remains encouraged by the team’s strong showing at the 7th Kimunyong Cup in Seoul, where Filipino athletes captured nine medals, including four golds. The performance provided confidence that the country’s young fighters can compete against some of Asia’s best.


    Leading the Philippine delegation are Ethan Jervey Dayne Chavez (-58kg), Kurt Mykel Curata (-58kg), Felicity Jana Castel (-49kg), Rhiyanne Agatha Shay Cadilena (-57kg), and Jeus Gabriel Derick Yape in poomsae.

    The men’s kyorugi squad, coached by former national standout Roberto Cruz and Christian Al Dela Cruz, will also feature VonGabriel Polo Barbosa (-54kg), Tor Timothy Castillo (-63kg), Sturdy Jay Gilbuena (-68kg), Cyvir Junio (-74kg), and Marcus Neil Delos Santos (-80kg).


    The women’s lineup includes Caitlin Julia Carlos (-46kg), Sharifa Vianca Dela Cruz (-53kg), Jizyl Javier (-67kg), Mary Heart Capulong (-73kg), and Ashley Rose Reniedo (over 73kg).


    Beyond the main competitors, several young athletes are also being monitored as potential future international representatives. John Daniel Navarro, Jay-R Casas, Jesseray Lucas Frantilla, Nathanael Managbanag, Liam Jethro Jimenez, Dane Shaun Enjealo Subaste, Carl Johnsen Ong, Paul Anthony Rodriguez, and Kemp Prochina are among the other names expected to contribute to the men’s program.


    The women’s development pool also features Aesha Kiara Oglayon, Glaiza Mae Cabural, Julianna Martha Uy, Casey De Leon, Elizabeth Marie Borres, Heza Allyson Serapio, Stella Nicole Yape, Emie Fernandez, and Juliana Mykhail Candelaria.


    For Hong, the Indonesia Open is not only about chasing medals but also about preparing athletes who could represent the Philippines in future major competitions, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.


    The PTA has continued to emphasize athlete development through international exposure and competitive opportunities, with the federation recognized as the country’s governing body for taekwondo and working alongside international organizations such as World Taekwondo.


    With a combination of experienced coaches and emerging fighters, the Philippine team enters Jakarta with confidence, aiming to prove that the country’s next generation of taekwondo athletes is ready to step onto the international stage.

    Tagaytay Velodrome to host 10th Senior Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships

    The Tagaytay City Velodrome is preparing for a remarkable transformation as the country’s only velodrome temporarily trades cycling for gymnastics to host the 10th Senior Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships from August 4 to 7.

     

    The four-day continental competition will bring together more than 400 athletes, coaches, officials, and delegates from 11 Asian nations, making it one of the biggest international sporting events ever staged in Tagaytay City.

     

    While the venue is traditionally home to cycling competitions, organizers have converted the facility into a world-class gymnastics arena capable of accommodating around 3,000 spectators. The makeover underscores the Philippines’ growing capability to host major international sporting events in a variety of disciplines.

    Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) President Cynthia Carrion said the decision to hold the championships at the Tagaytay City Velodrome came after Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, who also served as Tagaytay mayor, offered the venue for the prestigious event.

     

    “Philippine Olympic Committee President and former Tagaytay Mayor Abraham Tolentino graciously offered us the Tagaytay City Velodrome for our event. After inspecting it, we gratefully accepted his offer,” Carrion said during a media briefing.

     

    The championship will feature elite aerobic gymnasts from Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, Thailand, Vietnam, and host nation Philippines as they compete for continental honors.

     

    The event is expected to showcase some of Asia’s finest aerobic gymnastics talent, with athletes competing in various individual, mixed pair, trio, group, and aerobic dance categories. It also provides Filipino gymnasts with the rare opportunity to compete against world-class opposition on home soil while enjoying the support of local fans.

    Carrion expressed her gratitude to the local government of Tagaytay for its unwavering support, emphasizing that staging an event of this magnitude would not have been possible without the cooperation of both national and local officials.

     

    “We would like to thank POC President Bambol, Mayor Brent, and Vice Mayor Agnes for their all-out support in the hosting of this big international gymnastics event,” she said.

     

    Beyond the competition itself, the championships are also expected to provide a significant boost to tourism and the local economy. Hundreds of international visitors are expected to spend several days in Tagaytay, one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations known for its cool climate, scenic views of Taal Volcano, and vibrant dining scene.

     

    Carrion noted that visiting athletes and officials will have plenty of opportunities to experience the city’s attractions outside of competition, adding that the local government has encouraged businesses to warmly welcome the international delegation.

     

    “There is a variety of opportunities that our athletes and delegates for the 10th Senior Aerobic Championships can choose from when they visit Tagaytay, a beautiful and inspiring environment where they will return home with wonderful memories of their visit. The Tagaytay City government has also instructed commercial establishments like restaurants and cafes to give our participants discounts and other privileges,” she said.

     

    The event also aligns with the Philippine Sports Commission’s long-term vision of positioning the country as a premier destination for international sporting events in Southeast Asia. By successfully hosting continental and global competitions, the PSC hopes to further elevate the Philippines’ reputation as a capable organizer while generating economic activity through sports tourism.

     

    PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio praised the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines for once again taking on the challenge of organizing a major international tournament, citing the federation’s proven track record in delivering world-class events.

     

    “This is another noteworthy project hosted by GAP under the leadership of Tita Cynthia. The association has already shown its superb ability in hosting and organizing international events. We can expect GAP to raise the bar higher with its hosting of the 10th Senior Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships,” Gregorio said.

     

    With the Tagaytay City Velodrome set to welcome Asia’s top aerobic gymnasts, the Philippines will once again find itself on the international sporting stage, showcasing not only its organizational capabilities but also its commitment to promoting gymnastics and strengthening sports tourism through world-class events.

    The President expressed hope that the Filipinas’ continued success would inspire more young Filipinos to embrace football, with the long-term dream of seeing the country become a regular participant in football’s biggest international competitions.

     

    Following the President’s remarks, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) issued a statement thanking Marcos for recognizing the achievements of Philippine football on one of the country’s biggest political stages.

     

    “Lubos na nagpapasalamat ang Philippine Football Federation sa paghirang ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos sa Philippine football sa kanyang State of the Nation Address. Sama-sama nating iangat ang Pilipinas sa global stage ng football! Tayo naman, Pilipinas,” the federation said.

     

    The Filipinas are now preparing for another major international challenge as they turn their attention to the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.     Leading the national team are Albert Ian Delos Santos and Alexsandra Ann Diaz, two young lifters who recently made headlines on the international stage with record-breaking performances.

     

    Delos Santos enters the competition with momentum after ruling the 71kg division at the IWF Junior World Championship in Egypt last May, where he also established a new world record in the clean and jerk. For the upcoming Asian meet, he will move down to the juniors 70kg category as he looks to continue building on his breakthrough season.

     

    Diaz, meanwhile, will carry the confidence of a dominant showing at the IWF World Youth Weightlifting Championship in Cali, Cambodia, where she captured three gold medals and broke two world records in the girls’ 48kg division.

    The niece of Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz will compete in both the youth and junior 49kg divisions in Tashkent, a category where she has already gained valuable experience competing domestically. The 15-year-old hopes to bring the same form that powered her golden campaign in Colombia.

    The 17-year-old continues to draw inspiration from the guidance of Hidilyn Diaz, keeping her advice in mind whenever she steps onto the platform wearing the Philippine colors.

     

    For national coach Allen Diaz, the focus now is on making sure the athletes are physically and mentally ready for another demanding international challenge.

     

    Diaz has adjusted the training schedule of Alexsandra and Jhodie to match Uzbekistan’s time zone, aiming to help the young lifters transition smoothly once they arrive in Tashkent.

     

    The Philippine delegation also features several medal-winning athletes from previous international competitions, including IWF World Championship silver and bronze medalist Althea Bacaro, who will compete in the women’s 45kg youth division.

     

    Joining Bacaro in the youth category are Rhianne Cabalida in the women’s 69kg division, Jea Mae Palagtiw in the women’s 77kg class, Jay-R Colonia in men’s 55kg, Kirby Kent Alas-as in men’s 60kg, and Jerick Icon Castro in men’s 60kg.

     

    The junior division will feature Angeline Colonia (women’s 49kg), Rosalinda Faustino (women’s 57kg), Prince Keil Delos Santos (men’s 60kg), and Mango Prince David Tarro (men’s 65kg).

     

    The coaching staff composed of Gregorio Colonia, Patrick Cielo Lee, Allen Jayfrus Diaz, Diwa Delos Santos, and Kelle Kay Rojas will oversee the national team’s campaign.

     

    The Philippine delegation heads to Tashkent on Aug. 3 ahead of the tournament scheduled from Aug. 7 to 14.

     

    The team enters the competition with confidence after producing a strong performance at the IWF World Championships in Cali, Colombia earlier this month wherein the Philippines collected 16 medals. 

     

    With a roster built around proven performers and emerging stars, the Philippines hopes to turn its recent international success into another medal-rich campaign on the Asian stage.

    The 13-year-old pitcher becomes the first homegrown Filipino baseball player to be selected for IMG Academy’s elite baseball pathway, a significant milestone for Philippine baseball as Lazaro continues his pursuit of becoming the first player developed in the Philippines to reach Major League Baseball (MLB).


    IMG Academy is recognized globally for producing elite athletes across multiple sports, combining high-level coaching with advanced performance programs designed to develop both athletic ability and personal growth. Through the academy, Lazaro will have access to a comprehensive training environment focused not only on baseball skills but also on long-term athlete development.

    The opportunity marks a significant chapter in Lazaro’s young career, as he looks to sharpen his skills against some of the best young baseball talents from around the world while learning from coaches and experts who have helped shape future professional athletes.

    “I’m excited to immerse myself in a new training environment and learn from everyone at IMG Academy who helped develop some of the top athletes and professional players. I look forward to bringing home everything I gain from this so I could contribute more to my teams in the Philippines,” Lazaro said during a media interaction.


    The young pitcher also expressed his gratitude to IMG Academy for providing him with an opportunity to pursue his ambitions while continuing to represent the Philippines.


    “I’m very thankful to IMG Academy for welcoming me into its baseball and holistic athletic training program and for working closely with my mom over the past few months to help create exciting opportunities for my future. I’m humbled by this privilege and I’m ready to work hard to make the most of it,” he added.

Philippine tennis star Alex Eala committed to elite overseas training when she was 13 years old, joining the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain, where she developed her skills before making history as one of the country’s most successful tennis players.


    IMG Academy’s sister brand, IMG Tennis Management, currently represents Eala, further highlighting the organization’s connection to Filipino athletes seeking opportunities on the global stage.


    While training in Florida will provide Lazaro with access to world-class facilities and competition, he will continue his commitments in the Philippines. The young pitcher remains a member of the Ateneo Blue Eagles baseball program and will travel between the Philippines and the United States as he balances his education and athletic development.


    Currently a Grade 8 student at Ateneo, Lazaro also serves as team captain of the school’s Baseball Pony Division, where he continues to build his leadership skills alongside his growth as a player.


    With his selection to IMG Academy, Lazaro becomes one of the brightest young prospects in Philippine baseball. His journey represents not only a personal ambition but also a significant opportunity for the sport in the country, as he aims to inspire the next generation of Filipino baseball players and potentially break new ground on the international stage.

    The Philippines is taking a significant step onto the global badminton stage this week as it hosts its first-ever Badminton World Federation (BWF)-sanctioned International Challenge tournament, signaling the country’s growing ambitions in the sport.


    Competition begins with the qualifying rounds of the Philippine International Challenge 2026 at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City, where local hopefuls will test themselves against an international field seeking valuable world ranking points.

     

    Classified as a Grade 3, Level 1 event on the BWF Continental Circuit, the International Challenge sits above the International Series and Future Series, making it one of the highest-level tournaments ever staged in the country. Ranking points earned during the competition will count toward the BWF World Rankings, attracting established names and rising talents from across Asia and beyond.

     

    For the Philippine Badminton Association (PBA), bringing the tournament to Manila represents years of planning and coordination with the sport’s governing bodies.

     

    “The association sent bids to host these tournaments, a proposal to the BWF through Badminton Asia, to host an International Challenge and an International Junior Series this year,” PBA secretary-general Shawntel Nieto said.

     

    “Gratefully, they accepted, and with the support of and with the go-signal from boss MVP (Manny V. Pangilinan), we were able to plan out and bring it to life. So, we’re very excited about that.”

     

    The week-long tournament will showcase a competitive international field led by Kazakhstan’s Dimitri Panarin, who returns to the Philippines after previously competing in the main draw of the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships. Joining the men’s singles top seeds are India’s Manraj Singh and Alap Mishra, Indonesia’s Christian Adinata, and Malaysia’s Jing Hong Kok.

    In women’s singles, Thailand’s 21-year-old Tidaporn Kleebyeesun enters as the tournament’s top seed. Fellow Thais Yataweemin Ketklieng and Pornpicha Choeikeewong also headline the draw alongside Indonesian-born Azerbaijani Keisha Fatimah Azzahra and Malaysia’s Siti Zulaikha.

     

    While international stars headline the tournament, the spotlight will also be on the Philippines’ top-ranked players looking to capitalize on home-court advantage.

     

    Fresh from their campaigns in the Philippine National Badminton Open, World No. 122 Clarence Villaflor and four-time national women’s singles champion Mika De Guzman, also ranked No. 122 in the world, enter as top-10 seeds in their respective singles events. Three-time reigning national men’s singles champion Jelo Albo also joins the country’s main draw campaign.

     

    The national team has already secured additional representation in the main draw through National Open men’s doubles champions Julius Villabrille and Solomon Padiz Jr. Women’s doubles runners-up Lea Inlayo and Jeya Pinlac also advanced directly, along with Hailene Diaz and Naeomi Gulpany in the Round of 32.

     

    Several Filipino pairs and singles players, however, still have work to do in the qualifying rounds.

    In men’s singles, Mark Velasco opens against Saudi Arabia’s Mehad Shaikh, while JR Pandi takes on Australia’s Ken Richardson. A victory by either Filipino will complete the country’s men’s singles lineup alongside Villaflor and Albo.

     

    The mixed doubles qualifying draw features newly crowned national champions Villabrille and Andrea Princess Hernandez, who face Patricia Barredo and Filipino-born Australian Jan Mark Sotea for a place in the main draw. Solomon Padiz Jr. and Mary Destiny Untalan will likewise battle Vietnam’s Le Minh Son and Mai Thi Thanh Ngan for another qualifying spot.

     

    In men’s doubles, Lance Vargas and Carlo Remo begin their campaign against Laos’ Namboun Luangamath and Phonesack Sookthavy.

     

    The Philippine International Challenge runs until Aug. 2 before the country immediately shifts its attention to another milestone, with the Philippine International Junior Series scheduled to take place at the same Mandaluyong venue the following week, further strengthening the nation’s push to become a regular host on the international badminton calendar.

    Chezka Centeno completes redemption tour with third World 8-Ball crown

    Chezka Centeno didn’t just win another world championship—she erased old heartbreaks and defeated some of the sport’s biggest names to remind everyone why she belongs among billiards’ all-time greats.

     

    The 27-year-old Filipina completed a remarkable redemption campaign by defeating England’s Kelly Fisher, 9-6, to capture the 2026 Oneida WPA Women’s World 8-Ball Championship in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Monday morning (Philippine time).

     

    The victory gave Centeno her third career world title, adding the Women’s World 8-Ball championship to the World 10-Ball crowns she won in 2023 and 2025.

     

    What made the triumph even more impressive was the path she took to get there.

    Centeno marched through the tournament undefeated and eliminated four former world No. 1 players in the knockout rounds, proving she could conquer the toughest field women’s billiards had to offer.

     

    Her redemption journey began in the Round of 16, where she exacted revenge on defending champion Jasmin Ouschan of Austria with an 8-4 victory. The win avenged last year’s heartbreaking 9-8 finals defeat, where Ouschan denied Centeno the same title.

    The challenges only became tougher.

     

    Centeno next faced her longtime mentor and Philippine billiards icon Rubilen Amit, a three-time world champion, in an emotional all-Filipino quarterfinal. The Zamboanga City native prevailed, 8-6, to move one step closer to another world crown.

     

    She followed it up with an 8-5 semifinal victory over Chinese Taipei’s Wei Tzu-chien, who held the world No. 1 ranking as recently as August 2025.

     

    Waiting in the championship match was another decorated opponent in Fisher, a two-time world champion and former world No. 1.

     

    The title showdown lived up to expectations.

     

    Fisher struck first and held early advantages at 1-0 and 2-1 before Centeno found her rhythm, taking her first lead after the fifth rack. Neither player managed to pull away as the match remained tied at 5-5.

    That was when Centeno made her move.

     

    The Filipina claimed two consecutive racks to build a 7-5 cushion, but Fisher refused to fade quietly, trimming the deficit to 7-6 and threatening another momentum shift.

     

    Instead, it was Fisher’s costly mistake that proved decisive.

     

    The English veteran miscued on what appeared to be a routine corner-pocket shot in the 14th rack, allowing Centeno to clear the table and move within one rack of the championship.

     

    Centeno appeared ready to finish the match in the next rack but missed the 12-ball that would have left only the 8-ball on the table.

     

    The door briefly opened for Fisher until an instant replay review ruled that she had committed a foul on a safety attempt. The decision awarded Centeno ball-in-hand, giving her one final opportunity to close out the match.

     

    This time, she made no mistake.

     

    Centeno calmly cleared the remaining balls to secure the 9-6 victory and complete one of the most impressive championship runs of her career.

     

    Long before the knockout rounds, Centeno had already established herself as one of the tournament favorites after cruising through the double-elimination qualifying stage.

     

    She opened with a 7-2 victory over American Ada Lio before defeating Turkey’s Eylul Kibaroglu, 7-3, and South Korea’s Seo Seoa, 7-5, to enter the championship bracket unbeaten.

     

    By the end of the tournament, Centeno had done far more than lift another trophy. She had avenged a painful finals loss, defeated a mentor she deeply respects, toppled four former world No. 1 players, and added another historic chapter to what has become one of the greatest careers in Philippine billiards.

    Instead, the Filipino tennis sensation opens her North American hardcourt campaign against one of the sport’s biggest names after drawing Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen in the first round of the Mubadala DC Open, which begins its main draw on Monday, July 27, in Washington, D.C.

     

    Fresh off a historic Wimbledon breakthrough, Eala immediately finds herself facing the kind of challenge that has become increasingly common as her world ranking continues to climb. Now ranked No. 29, the highest of her career, the 20-year-old is no longer the underdog sneaking into draws but a player expected to compete against the WTA’s elite.

     

    The meeting will mark their first encounter on the WTA Tour, though the two are no strangers to one another.
