Eduard Folayang is approaching what could be one of the defining moments of the final chapter of an illustrious career.

Long regarded as one of the greatest mixed martial artists ever produced by the Philippines, the former ONE Lightweight MMA World Champion is entering his latest bout with more than just another victory in mind. At 42 years old, the Filipino icon admits that his upcoming fight may ultimately determine whether he continues competing or finally closes the curtain on a professional journey that has spanned nearly two decades.

Folayang will face rising Japanese contender Shozo Isojima in a lightweight mixed martial arts contest at The Inner Circle 21 on Friday, July 10, at the historic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. While the matchup presents another opportunity for the Team Lakay stalwart to showcase his trademark wushu-based striking and veteran savvy, it also serves as a deeply personal evaluation of where he stands at this stage of his career.

The Baguio City native enters the contest having won just one of his last five outings, a stretch that has tested both his resilience and determination. Despite the recent setbacks, Folayang believes the fire that carried him to the summit of Asian MMA may still be burning—and he intends to find out inside the cage.

“I see all this as a big challenge. Of course, some people are pointing out my age. But for me, I look at this fight as a good test to decide which direction I’m going to go. If I’m leaving fighting, or if I can still pull something out of the potential that remains in me,” Folayang said in a media interaction.

Standing across from him will be a significantly younger opponent in the 28-year-old Isojima, creating a 14-year age difference that has become one of the central storylines heading into the contest. Rather than viewing it as a disadvantage, however, Folayang welcomes the challenge, believing that facing an opponent in his physical prime will provide the clearest indication of whether he still belongs among the sport’s elite competitors.

For the former world champion, the fight represents more than a contest against another opponent—it is a crossroads that could shape the remainder of his professional life.

“To be honest, this fight could be my transition match. If my performance is not good, I think that’s already a sign for me to transition to another stage. But if I perform and still feel I’m there, I think that’s also a good sign for me to not leave yet,” he added.

Few fighters in Philippine mixed martial arts have assembled a résumé comparable to Folayang’s. Since making his professional debut in 2007, he has become one of the sport’s most recognizable figures in Asia, building a reputation through countless memorable performances against some of the biggest names in ONE Championship.

His crowning achievement came in 2016 when he dethroned Japanese legend Shinya Aoki to capture the ONE Lightweight MMA World Championship, cementing his place among the organization’s all-time greats. The victory remains one of the most celebrated moments in Philippine MMA history and elevated Folayang into national sporting prominence.

Throughout the years, the former SEA Games wushu gold medalist has become synonymous with discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship. As one of Team Lakay’s pioneering stars, he also helped establish Baguio City as one of the premier hubs for mixed martial arts talent in Asia, inspiring an entire generation of Filipino athletes to pursue careers in the sport.

While championships and accolades have defined much of his career, Folayang believes his greatest accomplishment would be seeing the next generation of Filipino fighters build upon the foundation he and his contemporaries helped create.

“If anything, I just want to see more Filipinos who are talented in this sport get their opportunities. I want to be an inspiration for them to chase the same dreams. I want the sport to continue and be able to inspire others to become better fighters and unleash their greatness,” Folayang continued.

That desire to leave a lasting impact beyond his own achievements has become increasingly important as he enters the twilight of his competitive career. Rather than measuring success solely by titles and victories, Folayang now views his influence on younger fighters and the continued growth of Philippine MMA as an equally meaningful part of his legacy.

Even with retirement becoming an increasingly frequent topic surrounding his career, Folayang insists that he has no intention of stepping away simply because of his age. Instead, he wants the decision to come naturally—when he feels he has given everything he possibly can to the sport that has defined his life.

Having witnessed numerous fighters retire only to make unsuccessful comebacks, the Filipino veteran hopes to avoid a similar scenario by ensuring that when he finally walks away, it will be with complete peace of mind.

“The thing is, when I retire, I want it because I feel fulfilled already. There are a lot of fighters who we see retire at the peak of their careers, then eventually they fight again. I want to avoid that dilemma,” he concluded.

Whether his clash against Isojima marks the beginning of one final run or the final chapter of a remarkable career remains to be seen. What is certain is that Folayang’s legacy as one of the pioneers of Philippine mixed martial arts is already secure. The bout at Lumpinee Stadium will not define what he has accomplished—but it may determine how one of the country’s greatest fighters chooses to write the final pages of his storied career.
