Philippine boxing standout Rodel Wenceslao has officially called time on his professional career, ending a journey defined by resilience, perseverance, and a remarkable transformation from an overlooked fighter into a championship contender.
Wenceslao, who represented the ARQ Boxing Stable in Cebu City, confirmed his retirement in a recent media interview, revealing that he is now preparing for the next chapter of his life outside the ring. The 33-year-old boxer is currently waiting for the approval of his application to work as a boxing trainer in South Korea, where he hopes to share his experience and knowledge with the next generation of fighters.
Although he admitted that he still had the desire to compete, Wenceslao said his decision was ultimately driven by his responsibility to his family and concerns over the long-term risks of continuing his career.

“Gusto pa ko moduwa unta pero, unahan nako akong pamilya. Nagkadugay, nagka-edad ta, delikado kung matimingan ta og knockout, dili na unya ta makabalik. The decision marked the conclusion of a career that featured plenty of adversity before reaching its biggest successes.
A native of Kananga, Leyte, Wenceslao moved to Cebu City with hopes of building a future in professional boxing. However, his early years in the sport were filled with challenges as he struggled to find consistency inside the ring.
From 2018 to 2019, Wenceslao endured five consecutive defeats, a difficult stretch that resulted in him being labeled a “journeyman”—a term often used in boxing for fighters who are viewed primarily as opponents rather than title contenders.

Instead of allowing those setbacks to define him, Wenceslao continued working and eventually found a career revival after joining the ARQ Boxing Stable following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under the guidance and support of the Cebu-based boxing outfit, Wenceslao rebuilt his confidence and produced one of the most impressive runs of his career. From 2022 to 2025, he put together a 10-fight unbeaten streak, turning himself from a struggling contender into a legitimate championship-level boxer.
During that stretch, Wenceslao captured the World Boxing Foundation (WBF) International and WBF Australasian welterweight titles, proving that his perseverance and dedication could overcome the obstacles he faced early in his career.
His final appearance as a professional boxer came in November 2025, when he faced China’s Yesihati Yeerken in an eight-round bout in General Santos City. Wenceslao gave a strong effort but ultimately fell short in a competitive contest, a result that prompted him to reflect on the direction of his career.
Following the expiration of his contract with ARQ Boxing Stable earlier this year, Wenceslao eventually decided that retirement was the best path forward.
Throughout his career transition, Wenceslao made sure to recognize the people who helped him achieve his greatest successes, particularly ARQ Boxing Stable head Jason Arquisola, whom he credited for giving him another opportunity when his boxing career appeared to be nearing its end.
“They gave me another chance when my career was almost over,” Wenceslao said.
Despite stepping away from competition, Wenceslao leaves behind a story that embodies the fighting spirit often associated with Filipino boxers. His journey from a struggling fighter to a decorated champion serves as a reminder that setbacks do not have to determine an athlete’s future.
Wenceslao concludes his professional career with a record of 24 wins, two draws, and 20 losses. While he acknowledged that part of him still wanted to continue competing, he said ensuring a better future for his family ultimately became his priority.
Now, as he prepares for a possible new career as a boxing trainer, Wenceslao hopes to bring the lessons he learned from years of fighting—inside and outside the ring—to help guide future athletes chasing their own dreams.
