King’s basketball journey began long before he arrived in Chicago. A standout collegiate player at the University of Oklahoma, he established himself as one of the top prospects in the country before declaring for the 1989 NBA Draft.
The Bulls selected King with the sixth overall pick in what proved to be one of the most important periods in franchise history. Entering a team led by Michael Jordan, King immediately provided depth and energy off the bench during his rookie campaign.
He appeared in all 82 games during the 1989-90 season and averaged 8.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, showcasing the potential that made him a lottery selection.
