“What a treat to spend some time with Alex Eala, fresh off her historic win at Wimbledon today. She is the first Filipino to reach the Round of 16. Such an inspiration for kids in the Philippines and all over the world. Keep going for it, Alex!,” Billie Jean King wrote in a post.
Speaking during an event in Makati City, Eala shared how much the encounter meant to her, revealing that it was only the second time she had met one of the most influential figures in women’s tennis.

“It was a spontaneous meeting. I didn’t know prior. She just happened to be there, and it was the second time I have met her. It’s the second time I have met her. And, like you said, she’s paved the way for so many. She has done so much for women and for equality. So, I respect her so much in that aspect. And the things she has done in my field have been amazing,” Eala said.
Beyond King’s legendary accomplishments on the court, Eala was struck by her humility and genuine interest in getting to know her personally.
“It was nice to chat with her. She inquired about my family, she asked how my family was, and she’s very down to earth. So I was a little starstruck, but I mean, it’s definitely a moment I will remember,” she added.
King was not the only tennis legend to recognize Eala’s recent achievements.
Former world No. 1 and five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova also praised the Filipina following her impressive Wimbledon campaign, a gesture that left Eala equally thrilled.
