Eduard Folayang has long been regarded as one of the greatest mixed martial artists the Philippines has ever produced, a reputation built through years of dedication, unforgettable battles, and achievements that helped put Filipino MMA on the global map.
The Team Lakay veteran’s legacy is defined by his remarkable accomplishments inside the cage, highlighted by his two reigns as the ONE Lightweight MMA World Champion. Through his combination of wushu-based striking, relentless work ethic, and warrior mentality, Folayang became one of the most respected figures in Asian mixed martial arts and an inspiration to countless Filipino athletes who followed his path.
Even at 42 years old, Folayang continues to answer the call of competition. The Baguio City native remains active on the MMA circuit and is preparing for another important test when he faces rising Japanese contender Shozo Isojima in a lightweight mixed martial arts bout at The Inner Circle 21 on Friday, July 10, at the historic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

For many fighters, competing at this stage of a career is about extending their legacy. For Folayang, however, every appearance represents something much deeper. Beyond personal achievements and victories, he views each fight as an opportunity to represent the Philippines and showcase the values that have guided him throughout his journey.
“I was taught to always represent your nation well, not just in skills but in values. I believe that when I step on the global stage, I carry the country’s reputation with me as well. I learned over the years that it’s not about what you say, but about how you handle yourself and give back to others. At the end of the day, that’s what separates us from other athletes,” Folayang said in a media interaction.
The upcoming bout against Isojima provides Folayang with another opportunity to display the experience, discipline, and composure that have defined his career. While his Japanese opponent represents a new generation of fighters looking to make a name for himself, Folayang believes his years of competition have provided him with valuable lessons that go beyond physical skills.
The veteran enters the matchup looking to build momentum after winning just one of his last five fights, a difficult stretch that has tested his resilience and determination. However, setbacks have never defined Folayang’s career. Instead, he has built his reputation on overcoming challenges, adapting through adversity, and continuing to compete against elite-level opposition.
For Folayang, the fight represents more than simply adding another result to his record. It is part of a larger personal journey as he evaluates the final stages of one of the most decorated careers in Philippine MMA history.

Having watched several fighters step away from competition only to return unsuccessfully, Folayang wants his own retirement decision to come at the right time—when he feels completely satisfied with everything he has accomplished.
“The thing is, when I retire, I want it because I feel fulfilled already. There are a lot of fighters who we see retire at the peak of their careers, then eventually they fight again. I want to avoid that dilemma,” he added.
Few Filipino fighters can match the impact Folayang has made since turning professional in 2007. Over nearly two decades, he has competed against some of the biggest names in Asian MMA and established himself as one of ONE Championship’s most recognizable athletes.
His defining moment came in 2016 when he defeated Japanese MMA legend Shinya Aoki to capture the ONE Lightweight MMA World Championship. The victory was a landmark achievement for Philippine combat sports, showcasing Folayang’s skill, heart, and ability to compete at the highest level of international MMA.
That triumph also helped inspire a new generation of Filipino fighters while strengthening the country’s presence in the global MMA scene. Folayang later captured the ONE Lightweight title for a second time, further solidifying his status as one of the organization’s all-time great competitors.
Beyond championships and accolades, Folayang’s influence has extended beyond the cage. His humility, sportsmanship, and commitment to representing the Philippines have made him a role model for aspiring martial artists and athletes across the country.
A victory over Isojima would mark the 24th win of his professional career and add another memorable chapter to an already historic journey. Since making his ONE Championship debut in September 2011, Folayang has experienced championship highs, difficult losses, and everything in between.
Whether his showdown against Isojima becomes the start of one final championship pursuit or the beginning of his farewell chapter remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that Eduard Folayang’s impact on Philippine MMA has already secured his place among the country’s greatest sporting figures.
As he steps into the Lumpinee Stadium cage once again, Folayang carries not only his years of experience but also the pride of a nation that has followed his remarkable journey from Baguio City to the global MMA stage.
